One of the few coffeehouses open late, Muddy's is the ""living room"" Mission denizens (often) don't have -- albeit a living room full of coffee-swilling strangers.
There's a full gamut of coffee & espresso formations and every kind of Celestial Seasons' teabag ever created. Food is mostly carbo fare with lots of sweetened flour things. Calzones and piroshkis are the ""meal"" items but don't come here for the food ... Muddy's is the sunny place to read a left-behind newspaper, a chance to play chess with Richmond, a place to check e-mail and lose quarters to oldie video games (tho' I never like to sit near mechanical-music of Ms. Pac Man). Good local artists exhibit on walls. SFSU/CCSF'ers (26 MUNI just outside) meet to muddle through theorems as sidewalk politicos opine about crummy government in San Francisco, Central America, Eastern Europe ...
Muddy's. What a great Coffee House should be.
Pros: Location (Val &24), Open early and late, Good Beans!
Cons: Bathroom
