Okay food, good jazz, but they rushed us out! 9/13/2008

I stumbled upon the jazz bistro with a large group (fourteen) because of long wait times at our previous dinner options. The staff accommodated us quickly despite our large group and lack of reservation. The food was average - good, but not good enough compared to the many other options in san francisco. The music (live jazz) was good, and the band even played ""happy birthday"" for my friend. Afterwards, the staff brought her a complimentary slice of cake with a candle for her birthday. Overall, we were glad to have chosen to dine there - that is right up until the end... once we were given the bill, we began working out who owed what (big group, each paying cash). While we were working out our dues, a man who appeared to be a manager came walking past our table, staring at us more than once. Just as my friends were counting up the cash, making sure we had calculated the tip correctly, he approached us and asked us to hurry up. He claimed that they needed the table so we should leave quickly (apparently there was another large group waiting, but there were many other tables available). The girls paying were intimidated and finished up quickly, but I was appalled - we were obviously on our way out anyway, we were just trying to PAY THEM. they should NEVER have asked us to leave like that. Pros: no reservations needed, free birthday cake, live music Cons: service, food, rushed us out the door more

Decent food and jazz 6/4/2006

The food was pretty good (French/pastas) and the jazz was entertaining. The service was not very good based on the price of the dishes (medium range $14-$20). Probably not the best place in SF for jazz and a meal, but a good option in Union Square. Pros: Jazz, Decent food Cons: Service more

I really liked this restaurant. 8/6/2005

I really liked this restaurant. I went with a group of friends and we had a fabulous evening. They made us feel welcome from the minute we arrived - and we didn't even have a reservation. The food was delicious - the menu had classic French dishes, from Frog's Legs and Escargot, to Cassoulet, Bouillabaisse and Scallops cooked in Pernod. The restaurant was full, but our service was wonderful - the Waiters were friendly and professional, and did not rush us. We loved the live Jazz Band - they were so good and the ambience was perfect. I will definately go back to this restaurant - the food, the service, the live entertainment and the reasonable prices - it was really great! Pros: Reasonable Prices, Good Parking, Live Entertainment more

Great Croissant Breakfast 6/6/2005

My husband & I stopped in early one Sunday morning after scouting the area for a place for breakfast. The service was VERY attentive, friendly and warm - putting us in a good mood (or was it the bloody mary?) for the day. I had a warmed croissant with egg and gruyere and my husband had the ""Popeye"" (spinach omelet). I see that this place had low reviews for dinner, so I can't comment on this. One person noted the ""small portions"" but I prefer small portions so this was not a problem. Also, it is very ""french"" to eat this way and it is a french restaurant afterall. I will definitely plan to come back again for breakfast and even give the jazz dinner a try. Sometimes ""good"" food and ""GREAT"" service are the best combination. Pros: service, croissant, cozy more

At least the music was good.... 5/15/2005

Which is more than I can say for the food. No one at the table was able to finish their plate, and unfortunately, it wasnt due to large portions (seafood pasta worst by far, chicken crepe comes in #2) They do have amazing live jazz, though! I would definitely recommend coming to hear them, but do it while you sip on a drink at the bar. If you're looking for something to actually eat, head elsewhere. Pros: live music, people watching Cons: food more

Big Mistake 4/10/2005

We were looking for a quick place to have a bite. WRONG! The portions were small and the service...what service? We had to wait for everything including the check. When we gave our credit card, someone vanished with it for a good 15 minutes. The french onion soup was lacking flavor and broth. Nice jazz band. Pros: Jazz music Cons: service, portion more
