Forgettable 6/18/2010

The headline says it all. I know I've stayed at this hotel, as I remember all of the bars we went to in the vicinity; however, only images on the web help me to remember anything about it. When looking at photos online, I remember the decor being a bit loud and the bed being a bit uncomfortable. Beyond that, I'm not too sure there's anything else to say. I'll give it two stars just for the fact that there are no negative memories that come to mind. Pros: proximity to restaurants & bars Cons: nothing special, not the most comfortable rooms more

One Of The Best 1/4/2009

This is the usual hotel i stay at when i come back to SF. It has everything you need without a lot of hassle. more

Good, kind, genuine service 2/28/2007

Wonderful hotel, fabulous customer service -- Stay here when you're in San Francisco. 7/3/2006

My husband and I came for our anniversary, and we loved it. This is no chain hotel--this place is chock full of personality. The hotel has charming decor, a beautiful lobby and bar, and one of the best restaurants in the city (it's tiny and seats roughly 24 people). Everyone here is friendly and helpful. There's a complementary glass of wonderful wine offered every evening. Steinbeck and Hammett quotes painted on the walls (if you love books, you'll love Hotel Rex). Fabulous handpainted lampshades. For some reason, the place seems to have vacancies. It makes no sense. No sense at all. Pros: Ambience, service, restaurant Cons: None more

Wonderful Hotel! 4/19/2006

My family and I stayed at the Hotel Rex and was impressed with the overall feel and character of the place. We loved how it felt very New York and San Francisco altogether. The location was perfect. It is a small hotel but big on character and charm. The food at the restaurant by the lobby, Cafe Andree was superb! This hotel will now be our special hideaway place in SF! more

Great Hotel on Union Square 5/4/2005

Very nice hotel on Union Square. It's far from the homeless areas like Geary or Taylor. Great service and very nice amenities in the room. more

Boutique Hotel - Perfect Hideaway 3/21/2005

Great boutique hotel on Sutter Street, a block away from Union Square. The hotel has a great lobby with bar in the end. The place offers free wine every evening, high-speed Internet in each room, and awesome service! They also have a nice private business center free for guests. Pros: Great Value, Cool Place, Great Service more

Beware... 4/9/2004

I was in the hotel for wedding preparations, and gave some mail to the desk clerk as they said they had a mail box. My mail never reached it's destination, including the two rented DVD's that I was returning. It's a shame when a lovely place has a dishonest staff. It also took the valet almost an hour to fetch our car at 11:00 at night. more

just not worth it 9/24/2002

Service was awful, particularly the front desk as well as the sales staff when we booked a few rooms for my family. My cousins stayed at Cartwright which is steps away from this hotel enjoyed much better value - same location, much cheaper, and the bathroom kit was Aveda. I then realized that there are plenty of choices in this town given the rate Rex charges. Learned my lesson and I won't go back. more

Small but cute 8/7/2002

This hotel has charm - and although it is small, it's a great little place for a weekend getaway. Rooms and lobby are beautifully decorated, service is ok, not great. Great location next to Union Square. The complimentary wine hour was excellent. Pros: Location, Beautiful Decor, Wine hour! Cons: Not-so-good service, Small hotel rooms more

wonderful sheets 6/20/2002

Excellent service, wonderful sheets, nicely decorated rooms, excellent location. The decor in the lobby and bar area is very classy yet comfortable. I would recommend it. Pros: location, great sheets more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Modeled after New York's famous Algonquin circa the 1930s, this salon-style hotel (formerly the Orchard) showcases well-known Bay Area authors, such as Jack London and Ambrose Bierce. In the extensive lobby library, their works line the mahogany bookshelves, and their portraits brighten the beige walls. In keeping with the bookish theme, poetry readings are held once a month in the lobby.

    The Details
The hotel was opened by the Joie de Vivre group in 1997. It sits near Union Square, surrounded by art galleries on relatively quiet Sutter Street. The 94 compact rooms are homey, light and airy, and feature updated bathrooms. Amenities include writing desks (of course), private voicemail and call waiting. Cafe Andree serves breakfast, lunch and dinner; there is also a bar and complimentary evening wine service. Along with a concierge and salon/meeting room, extras include an adjoining antiquarian bookshop.
