Best

Empty Bottle is a very cozy place, a dive bar with chic. The immediate stage area is small and intimate, but also perfectly visible from the bar if you don't want to get right up...

No Frills Club 6/23/2006

This club is a bit dingy, smoky and located in kinda a funky hood. This is the setting that is ideal for Punk bands, up and coming indie/alt bands and the alt/country bands they book in here sometimes. Look what CBGB in NY has done for bands! The drink prices are low as is the admission for alot of their diverse shows. There is street parking available only. Most of their shows don't start until aprox. 10 pm. Support local bands! more

One of my favorite places to see a rock band 3/18/2006

I've seen some incredible shows over the years here, ranging from the cover theme nights they used to do (I seem to recall a Prince night and a Depeche Mode/New Order night) to seeing Elliott Smith alone with just him, a chair and his guitar. I love the intimate feel of the place, and the sound is really pretty decent. I have also really been digging the Handmade Market they have been doing every third Saturday. I've picked up some great, handmade items that are reasonably priced. more

Livin Life Day and Night 8/16/2005

The Empty Bottle is a nice solace when you're surrounded by monotony every day. When you come here, there's life, youth, and creativity filtering through the air. Music varies, but for the most part, you'll find your alternative/indie bands. The lineups are pretty good, energetic and entertaining, and not necessarily always for the pretentious. Beware, you will find pretentious people, but aren't we all victims? Drinks can be super cheap, and they have specials. I like that they have a raised floor area across from the stage so that everyone can try to see. It reminds me of a basement or a party, but a little more organized. more

The Empty Bottle 8/5/2005

The Empty Bottle is everything a live music venue should be - small, intimate dirty, hot and dark. It's slightly uncomfortable, but in an appealing way. It's a great place to see bands playing live music. Nothing more. You won't see fancy Vegas type productions. You won't find ridiculously overpriced drinks. You won't find anything except a basic, no frills bar/club. I am especially fond of this place because they often cater to more experimental bands, which I happen to be a big fan of. If you're looking for something to do, and aren't afraid of being introduced to some new music and spending the evening in a gloriously smoky, dingy bar, you should stop reading and get over there. more

Editorial
  • Empty Bottle's a destination for explorers of jazz and out-there rock from Chicago and beyond, plus dance/DJ fans; owner Bruce Finkelman has a reputation for gutsy programming. At this combination old-time corner tap and hipster hangout, concert posters festoon walls, and Christmas lights hang regardless of season. Sight lines in the small, L-shaped space are excellent. If music's not your thing, retreat to the anteroom and its shaggy seating, arcade games and pool table. The long, vintage wooden bar serves reasonably priced bottles of beer, as well as a nice selection of drafts and microbrews, wines by the glass or bottle and cocktails.
