A great Valentine's Day date 2/15/2008

My husband took me to Dragonfly on Valentine's Day this year. It was quite a treat! The wait staff is amazing; very quick on orders. The food was very tasty; we ordered the golden shrimp, the treasure rolls, the coconut chicken, and the garlic noodles with prawns. The portions were just right for the two of us. And to put us over the top, we received a complimentary dessert to celebrate Valentine's Day. It was a wonderful experience. I can't wait to go again. Pros: Wait staff service, food, pricing, ambience Cons: Parking more

Tasty food 4/21/2007

Finally had a chance to try this restaurant only because KOO, my other favorite place in the neighborhood, had no tables. On a whim, we walked into Dragonfly & were seated promptly. The rooms are nicely decorated with Vietnamese hats or paintings and tables draped with white table cloths and covered with glass. The wait staff was very nice and kept filling our tea kettle and water glasses. Pre-meal you're served French bread with a dollop of pate in a tiny glass serving dish with lid. We had to have seconds of the pate & bread. The papaya salad was very tasty and yes, as stated by a previous reviewer, the beef was jerky-like but we didn't mind. The Look Luk beef dish was very good and served with a citrusy dipping sauce. The 5-spice chicken wasn't bad but I didn't like the sweet sauce (commonly served with Imperial rolls) for that came with it. Tried both the ginger steamed rice and coconut rice (both came wrapped in leaves and served in bamboo containers) and found the beef dish didn't blend well with the sweeter coconut rice, which would've probably tasted better with seafood dishes. The ginger rice was especially good with the beef dish as well as the chicken. Except for the rush job by the busboy to clear our table, one accidental slip and the dishes would've been on my lap, the meal was very good. We ended with a fried banana served with ice cream and drizzled with honey and chopped nuts on the side. The customers next to us had the crab with garlic noodles and it looked very good. Would definitely try this place again. Pros: Delicious ginger rice and Look Luk beef dish, nice atmosphere and wait staff Cons: parking can be difficult on weekends, hurried wait staff more

Awesome Service and Food!! 11/13/2006

Went here with some friends visiting from out of town, one of whom had been to vietnam (and I've travelled Southeast Asia extensively as well). It's a great little neighborhood place and we were blown away by the attentive service (never ONCE wanting for anything!) and the FANTASTIC food....especially for being here in the states...it made us feel like we were there all over again (in Asia that is!). We ordered pretty much everything on the menu (can't list them all here)...especially liked the tableside cooking show :) We will definately be regulars at this place...much better atmosphere than the cafeteria-like Slanted Door where you have to wait a gazillion hours to get a table! Try it..you won't be disappointed!!! Pros: everything! Cons: parking's a little rough, although if you're early they have a little parking area across the street more

Great vietnamese food & customer service 7/26/2006

Sure, Slanted Door is great but it's located in downtown and always so hard to get a table! There's finally another nice vietnamese restaurant where we can get a variety of dishes when you want to try something other than pho. We tried a beef dish that they cook tableside - they light the fire around a glass bowl & the beef inside the bowl cooks! Then you wrap the beef, veggies & fish sauce in a rice wrap and eat it like a springroll. yummy. The salmon with okra is cooked perfectly and the vietnamese sweet & sour soup is tasty as well. the price is fair for the type of food & service that you get. definitely will return. Pros: Great food & service, near N Judah Cons: in front of N Judah - the noise more

Great Neighborhood Place! 7/5/2006

I almost hesitate to write a good review because this is a neighborhood gem and I'd LOVE to keep it that way! But, alas, its a family business and I like to support the local places. Pros: great food, nice ambience, fantastic service Cons: parking in the area kind of stinks but the N-Judah is right there more

Way over-rated 6/20/2006

We had high expectation when we visited. Nothing was good. The sauce on the prawns were way over-fermented. The rice had been microwaved. The Vietnamese crepe was greasy and the asparagus soup had no taste. The papaya salad was decent. The servers were definitely nice and accommodating. more

Delicious! 5/13/2006

Went here for Mother's Day for lunch and wow the food was delicious. Because of the great reviews, we had to try this place and its true about what they say ""food taste good and great value."" Our waitor was very friendly/nice. My family and I was very satisfied with the food. Try the fried calamari....yum yum very delicious! I would love to come back and eat here again! Pros: great food, great value, great service Cons: parking more

Good Service, Good Food, Good Price 1/29/2006

I brought a large party of 20+ friends to Dragonfly for my birthday dinner the other night and we were very impressed. The food was delicious, especially the garlic noodles and crab, and the eggplant with pork. The service was courteous, professional and friendly, and they catered to our special requests and needs. When the bill came we were suprised at how great a bargain it came out to be. The decor and lighting were a plus as well. My dinner was a success, and I'd definitely return! more

Freebies do not entice a return 1/22/2006

Were offered free appetizer and glass of wine, but most of the entries we ordered hit below expectation for an average Vietnamese. Dragonfly tries to raise the bar with its decor and prices, but food doesn't measure up. The lettuce wraps were served on an endive topped with noodles and beef; none of the usual herbal accompaniments. The spring rolls consisted of shrimp and noodles and were very bland. The papaya salad was refreshing, but topping of beef jerky wasn't welcome. For main course we got coconut chicken and green beans. The green beans were stars of the dinner, but chicken left much to be desired. Starting with how sad and small it looked in the claypot, to how bland and chewy it was. To top off the subpar food, the service was brisk. They cleared stuff before were finished, eventhough nobody was waiting for the table. Pros: Location, Decore Cons: Food, Service more

A great addition to the area 1/21/2006

Ive been here three times and the service and food are always great. The first time I ate here I arrived early for my partys 7pm reservation but my girlfriends arrived 10 minutes late. They still gave us the early bird special of complimentary of wine and fried prawns, which was a pleasant surprise. Ive had the Dungeness crab every time Ive eaten here and its always great. The garlic noodles could use some more garlic, however. The sea bass wasnt so good the first time I had it, but it was delicious and fresh the second time around when I came with a different party. Maybe they had improved it since. The place is simple, clean and elegant. Its a great dining experience here every time. Pros: food, service more

Great Modern Viet Cuisine 12/6/2005

I visited this place for weekend brunch. I had great vietmese food at reasonable prices. Their rendtion of even the most basic pho was excellent by letting you mix in your own meats into the steaming broth. The shaking beef and crab was also good. I agree with the other posts the chocolate fondue was out of this world. Pros: prices, food quality Cons: parking still a prob more

Great service! 11/18/2005

Early bird special (everyday between 5 to 7pm) was the two pieces deep fried breaded shrimps and a choice of a glass of house wine per person which was wonderful. Spring rolls were over charged. I just wanted to see the $7.95 spring rolls and it was nothing special. Other Vietnamese restaurants usually charge $4.95 for the spring rolls. Eggplant dish was really good and Beef look luck was tender and only $9.00. Because of the early bird special, it was great overall. Thanks to our server. He was very efficient and nice. Pros: Early bird special, Food more

Great food with awesome service! 9/8/2005

I visited this restaurant after reading a review that recommended it and I was not disappointed. The food was excellent while the prices are moderate. Very cute and inviting atmosphere. The servers are extremely accommodating and friendly. I too would highly recommend Dragon Fly. Pros: Moderate prices, Excellent service, Excellent food Cons: parking more

A Nice Surprise 8/9/2005

I recently stumbled upon this new resturant in the Inner Sunset and fell in love. Not only was the food amazing, the modern touches to the decor made it an overall fun experience. The only downfall (might be a bonus for others) is the location since it is not in the hub of activity on 9th/Irving. I highly recommend it! more

EXCELLENT - Best Vietnamese in San Francisco! 8/7/2005

I have no affiliation with this restaurant and am not normally a fan of Vietnamese food, but I had to post a review as I was so pleasantly surprised by Dragonfly. Their salmon entree in particular is fantastic -- some of the best I've had at *any* restaurant, regardless of cuisine or price. Dragonfly is located a few doors away from the main restaurant strip along 9th Avenue, but it's well worth seeking out. more

Dragonfly Vietnamese cuisine 7/27/2005

My mouth hasn't experienced this type of culinary ride in a long time. We had a lovely dinner here, the quality food, the ambiance, and details brings this restaurant on top. Reasonable price (Most things were about $10). Friendly service, Good place to go for a date, or with a group. I recommend the flamming beef, and the sea brass, the best sea brass I've ever eaten. And the Dragonfly hotpocket was also deelish! The chocolate fondue served with fresh fruit and pond cake is out of this world! I recommend sitting inside is more quite. Pros: Good food, Good for date, Inexpensive more

Dragonfly-New restaurant in inner sunset 7/15/2005

Front room has great modern decor (back room not as nice) Dishes recommanded - 5 spice chicken generous portions (2 thighs) and delicious, didn't get the shaking beef b/c way to pricey $19 compared to Lok Luck (sp?) beef which was the same but $9 and was like the shaking beef at slanted door. Brown rice- good and healthy. Dessert - black sticky rice - yum! I had chocolate fondue!!! love fondue!!! came with stawberries, pound cake, apple, mandarin orange slices. with a little grand marnier very attentive service. guy who clears plates needs polish. Bathroom - clean, not scary, automatic towel dispenser, handsfree trash can! Pros: great food, nice ambiance, good service more

Vietnamese restaurant 7/13/2005

Went there twices. Love the Flaming beef, beef fired in a bowl at your table. Everything is on fire in this place, even the ice cream. Got to try the black sticky rice for dessert. Pros: Good food, Not crowded Cons: No parking, Expensive more
