Best

Hands down best Indian food in Seattle is Cedars on Brooklyn Restaurant. It is crowded ('cause we love it), but the servers don't smash into you either. Long wait times are made ...

Will not go back 12/8/2007

I have gone to Cedars two times and do not plan on returning. The first time, I saw the waitstaff making fun of me in the next room over. If you are going to make fun of your patrons, at least do it where they can't see you. The second time (more recently...the rest of the group wanted to go) we were promptly seated but had to be moved when the roof started leaking on our table! They moved us to a much smaller table where we didn't even have enough room for all of our plates. When the bill came there was no discount for the leak (which is fine, but most restaurants would probably give you something as compensation) and then the owner rudely came to our table implying that we leave (we had just put the pen down to sign the check). Apparently he was more concerned with immediately seating others than allowing customers to relax for even a minute after their meal. The service here is not good (aside from the servers who fill up your water after every sip). The food is ok, but there are lots of great Indian restaurants in Seattle with better service. Pros: Some good dishes. Cons: Poor service more

Heavenly food + express service(once seated) 10/7/2007

Without a question, Cedars is the restaurant serving the best Indian food in the Seattle area. And, the food comes with the kind of efficient service that rivals the best in business and is light years ahead of any other Indian restaurant in this area.\r \r We have had three experiences with Cedars - everyone of them delightful - , once for lunch, once for dinner and once for catering for our son's birthday party. If you ate there and thought that the varoety and range of items is impressive, wait till you place a catering order. You'd find a mouth-watering assortment of appetizers and desserts offered in addition to what's on the dine-in menu.\r \r Watch out though, the restaraurant is wildly popular so be prepared to wait at least 30 minutes if you walk in for dinner. But once seated, your order is taken - and fulfilled! - in no time at all. \r \r Pros: Heavenly food, express service Cons: long wait times in evenings more

He seats larger tables ahead of 2 and 3 person parties no matter if you've been waiting an hour longer 9/18/2007

The food is great and the wait stuff really hussles, but the owner will not seat a 2 or 3 person party no matter how long you've been waiting if larger parties come in after you. He puts 2 small tables together to make a 4 top, so why he seats a 4 top ahead of 2 two tops is inexcusable. We've never had such a terrible experience at a restaurant, waiting an hour and 20 minutes when our wait should have only been a 1/2 hour tops. It was so blantantly wrong what he was doing with the wait list. At one point a staff member even turned the waiting list face down so people waiting couldn't look at it. I suggest telling them you have a party of 4 and when they seat you and see only 2 people, tell them the others will be there in a few minutes - that's how long the owner tells you you will be waiting, as the minutes become an hour plus. \r It will also help you getting a table if you are of Indian ethnicity as the owner seated 4 different tables of walkins, including a 2 top, ahead of us though they showed up after we and most everyone else had already been waiting 30 minutes plus. They had no reservations, just the right skin color. We couldn't believe it... inexcusable. Pros: Great Food. Cons: Unfair wait for seating. more

Find another Indian restaurant - owner is horrible 5/21/2007

Okay, so the food is good, but because of the owner, I will never go back to this restaurant. He is the rudest individual I've met in the restaurant industry (I was a waitress). There was a mistake in my order and the waitress quickly acknowledged it and attempted to remedy it. She was great. But then the owner came running over and started yelling at me that I have to keep this wrong dish because he didn't want to take it back. We then argued for a bit to the point where he started yelling at me saying that it was MY mistake. Eventually, after I proved to him that it was his by pointing to his own menu (He took our order by chance), he took the plate back to the kitchen (we could look directly into the kitchen) only to replate it for another customer!!!! We promptly left and got our food to go- only paying for what had already been touched since he obviously has no problem replating food that other customers had partially consumed. Customer service is not in this man's vocabulary and neither are health codes. I regret leaving a tip because I didn't realize he pockets all of it. Pros: Good food when not recycled Cons: owner, customer service, recycled food more

DO NOT TIP AT CEDAR'S - THE OWNER TAKES ALL THE TIP 4/22/2007

The food there is pretty good, however, the restaurant (or house) is overly cramped. The hosts look really irritated by the amount of people waiting to get seated. Also LUNCH ENDS AT 2:30 p.m. so make sure you note that when you get there. I got there at 2:15 and left around 3:00 and got charged for dinner price (which went from $7.95 per dish to $11.95 for the same dish, same portions). Also, NEVER TIP at Cedar's because the owner takes all the tip. The waiters typically work their asses off but, unfortunately, they don't get a cent of your tip. I believe the tips go to the owner's Bentley fund. In my humble opinion, it says a lot about the owner when they take their workers' tips. So in a nutshell, pretty good food, terrible atmosphere, cramped, and sheisty owners. Your best bet is to call in advance and take it to go. Pros: Good food, good service by the waiters and waitresses Cons: Bad atmosphere - loud and cramped, owner money hungry more

Terrible!!! 4/7/2007

Food was bland and gave me a stomach ache. When I received the check it also gave me a pain in my pocketbook! We went to lunch on Saturday and they charged us for the dinner menu price. Completely disappointed. They told us that the dinner started at 2:30. However, I called at a later time and they told me that dinner starts at 3pm. They took advantage of us and were dishonest because there wasn't anything on their menu (or in their waiting area) that indicated lunch/dinner service time. Cons: Terrible food and service. Deceptive lunch/dinner start times. more

Sooo overrated, people 3/19/2007

I've been a few times and never had a good experience. You're greeted by smug attitudes at the front desk almost coming off as annoyed that they're so busy, and the wait staff looks so unhappy like they're forced to be there for community service. The chicken is fatty, and the naan isn't the greatest, and like many others have stated it's crowded, loud, and they want you in and out. Last night I wanted to give it a second chance with my date before a movie nearby. They told us it'd be five minutes, but didn't ask for a name or anything. 30 minutes later after five different parties were seated ahead of us, (the last one being the second party of two to arrive after us), I left so angry. My girlfriend took the opportunity to let them know how bad that made them look and they promised the next table was ours. No thanks. If you've been in business this long and still have no idea how to be friendly and inviting, and employ some sort of list of names during busy times than that's just sad. The food was mediocre the two previous times I went, so I was fine walking out. I've heard good things about Taste of India right up the road, but I still think I'll stick with Chutneys on Capitol Hill for the best service, nice atmosphere, adequate seating and best food for your money (Chicken Tikka Masala is a must - and excellent naan). When you dine out you should be made to feel that your business is appreciated. Notice all of the recent reviews of Cedars are mostly very negative. Believe them. more

Rush Hour 3/17/2007

I have always loved the food at Cedars, but it is not the place to go if you want a leisurely meal. My boyfriend and I went there for a nice dinner on a Monday night and we were rushed out of there. They literally started breaking down tables (taking them apart and moving them out of the room) while there were still diners in the restaurant. As plates got emptier, there were waiters trying to take them away. They always asked first, but the constant interuption was annoying. We weren't the only diners in the restaurant and it wasn't that late, probably around 10pm. As always the food was wonderful.\r \r I have always thought it was weird the way the wait staff hovers to fill water glasses and chai--almost every time you take a drink--and they wipe the table after they clear the plates. I can't decide if I dislike this more than not having enough service. Pros: Great food, good atmosphere Cons: Overly attentive waitstaff more

Always hits the spot 2/17/2007

Cedar's has been a family favorite for years now. When we're wondering where to eat and have become indecisive, we can all count on the fact that we will be satisfied by eating at Cedar's. These days it tends to be very packed, and should probably be avoided around the dinner hour. No worries though--you can still get many of your favorites on the lunch hour, and at a slightly discounted price! They have added a spice shop which I think is nice, but you will most likely be told to wait in there if the place is busy and they are trying to find you a seat. Pros: great food, nice selection Cons: poor overworked looking waitstaff more

Extremely nice staff, horrible food in over-cramped setting 1/17/2007

We made reservations for 7 p.m., didn't get seated until 7:30. Hey, it was Friday night, sometimes these things happen. However, when we were seated, they brought our party of three to a tiny two-person table (as they did with two other parties of three while we were there). I'm a relatively small girl and I was smashed into the table so uncomfortably. The service was extremely nice, and the waitstaff did what they could to place all of our food on the table, but it was impossible. Our food come RIGHT after the appetizer (they're very quick!) and we had to divide the appetizer (which was a plate meant to be shared and picked at) between our three plates and pile it on top of our entrees. The food itself was horrible... dark, fatty chicken and over-cooked vegetables. I was really disappointed. We usually go to Bombay Grill but had heard from friends that this was a lot better. Not at ALL. \r \r Again, I can't say enough about how friendly the entire staff (including a man who I think is the owner or manager) was, but still, with so many good choices for Indian within a couple of blocks that don't have the hype or the crowds, we won't be back. Pros: Staff is so friendly and tries to accomodate Cons: Crowded, doesn't keep reservations for proper time, horrible food more

Good Indian. Bad Service? 1/12/2007

I love Cedars. When I was at UW, i would go there religiously. There are always two main arguments about this place. Food vs. Service. I would have to say that 99% of my friends LOVE this place. The spices are terrific, almost every dish is a can't miss. I've tried to many other Indian restaurants in the area, but none really compare to Cedar's (and Taste of India). Their naan is the fluffiest and the chai is the tastiest. Banjara is pretty good on Queen Anne though. \r \r So on to the service, I don't necessarily say it's bad, rather, it's efficient. This place is always packed, so they have to get people in and out as soon as they can. Obviously, when there is a waiting list of 20 deep (speaks volumes), they can't have you sitting there forever. Although, they lack much personality, they always fill up your water and there is always an accesible server there to help you. \r \r Overall, I personally feel that the food greatly outweighs any ""poor"" service you may receive. Pros: food, food, food more

Great Food, Horrible Owner 11/16/2006

We have been there 3 times and will never go again. My wife does not like any sweetness to her entrees so she ordered an item the waitress assured her wasn't. Well you guessed it, it was. The waitress was very apologetic and offered to give us another dish, which I would expect. Soon thereafter the owner came over with the dish in his hand screaming that the food was custom made and he couldn't take it back that we ordered it and we sould eat it. Deffinately loud enough to have half the place staring at us. When we left we tipped the waitress directly as I didn't want to have to have her split it. My second worst restaraunt experience ever! (We won't speak about the Ethiopian episode in Portland). I will never go back to Cedar's not even if the food was free. more

I missed Cedars! 11/6/2006

I am shocked about the coachroaches mentioned in the previous review...I really hope it's not true. Anyway...when I was in school, I used to go to cedars all the time. They have the best chai!!!!!!!!! I have been to countless other Indian restaurants and none compare to Cedar's chai. I have been living in another state and it's just not the same:(. In addition to their chai, I really like their food, especially their coconut curry and their garlic naan. Their service was pretty good/borderline scary because everytime I would take a sip of my water or chai, someone would be there to refill it. All in all, I really like Cedars. I can't wait to go there the next time in Seattle! Pros: The chai and the food is pretty good. Cons: Very crowded around dinner more
