Pretty damn good 10/11/2006

Ok my husband and I arrived there close to 9 on a Tuesday night. We had to wait 15 minutes to be seated. THATS how crowded this place is. But we didn't care. We love Indian food and were excited to try something new. Plus they gave us ice water while we waited which was a nice gesture. There were tons of people there (as I said) but the atmosphere was nice enough. And the food was excellent. My only complaint was the samosas were a little greasy but not horribly so and they didn't have tomato chutney (but they did have the mint and tamarind- yum!). The nan bread was really good- tasted really fresh. We got the entrées level 4 spicy (out of 5) and they were the perfect level of punch. Really not unreasonably priced for ethnic food. All in all we will be returning. I'd just recommend hitting an off time though to avoid the crowds. more

The butter chicken was good.. 9/3/2006

but considering the hype surrounding this restaurant, I really thought my whole eating experience would be better. It could be me though, I had really high expectations going in the front door and I was somewhat disappointed with the food. My husband and I liked the garlic naan and the butter chicken. The daal we recieved was somewhat lack luster and the tandoori prawns were mealy. I rate the whole experience to be good because of the butter chicken and the naan. I will have to try some different things next time though and see if I have a better experience. more

Cedars is over-rated 8/10/2006

I know - most people love 'em. I've never been impressed with the food. The service is mediocre at best, and they're stingy with the paneer. The last time I ate there - the server spilled vindaloo all over my wool coat - then denied it. Have you ever tried to get vindaloo out of fabric? Lost cause. more

The only place to spend money in the U-District 6/22/2006

Cedars and Thai-65 are the only places that I would spend more than $15 to eat at, the food at both places is always excellent. The most underrated thing about Cedars is the fact that their portions are very large. I eat a lot, and still almost always have leftovers. This shows Zum Zum what real Indian food should taste like. more

Cedars ----- Great Indian Food 4/9/2006

First of all, I love Indian food, vinderloo in particular. The vinderloo in Cedar is absolutely delicious and I go there almost once a week. There is always a long line at dinner time which is somewhat annoying. But to me, it shows the popularity of Cedar. They won't have so many costumer if their food is not good. more

I hate writing this.... 4/4/2006

.... but it's true. I don't like Cedars. I love Indian food and the idea of a good butter chicken curry makes my head spin, but each time I have dined at this restaurant, I always end up leaving disappointed. The wait is long if you come during the 7pm Seattle-dining hour and the seating is cramped. With all the commotion, it is easy to see why the servers always seem flustered and forgetful. The food itself is okay, moreso than other Indian restaurants, you can tell the curries have been pre-prepared. Also, the chicken is low-quality and can leave your stomach churning if you bite into a bad piece. :-( I know I am probably the only one who doesn't like this restaurant, so don't go with just what I said. Maybe I got unlucky the few times I went.... Sorry. more

Cedars on Brooklyn 3/31/2006

Cedars on Brooklyn is an Indian restaurant located on the corner of Brooklyn Ave. and NE 50th. It is a restaurant that has been converted from a house, so the restaurant itself has a lot of character. The quality of the food is very good and the food is delicious. The restaurant is always quite busy and popular but there is not much of a wait for a table. Reserve in advance for larger groups. Any dish here is good but my favorite is the biryani rice dish. more

I've eaten my body weight in their falafel sandwiches! 3/16/2006

The proprietor of Cedar's knows the names of his long-time customers by name. Their wait staff buzzes about in a harmonious dance, like a bee hive; each table will interact with a few of them and they all take responsibility to cater to the needs of the customer. Their cuisine is an excellent value in its price range, and I highly recommend the desserts that they bake on site as well. My only complaint is about the size of their parking lot. more

Good Felafels 3/8/2006

Cedars is a good place to grab a felafel in Seattle. Granted there isn't a lot of competition but I was pretty pleased with the restaurant / road side window. Good fast food. I didnt' love the baklava....but their soda selection was great (they have ginger ale) more

Cedars-- mealtime perfection 3/8/2006

Cedars Restaurant is my favorite U-District restaurant, hands-down. Their chicken tikka masala with garlic nan absolutely cannot be topped. Add in friendly service and a cool atmosphere, and it almost entirely makes up for the usually-long waits for tables. A great place to meet friends and have a delicious meal. more

Cedars - Amazing Indian Cuisine 3/8/2006

I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT! I have lived here for 7 years and can not say enough about Cedars. If you want amazing Indian food I highly recommend this place. This place is PACKED on busy hours i.e. 12:00pm & 5-7:00pm. The spinach naan and Tandoori Chicken Tikka are amazing! The staff are accommodating and every so often you may get a free desert from the manager. Please try this place at least once. more

Great Food and Great Service 12/30/2005

This place has a wide variety of foods, and it even branches out of the realm of Indian food a bit. I always stick with the Indian food, however, and it is excellent. The butter marsala, and palak paneer are two of my favorites. The nan is excellent, as is the chai (very sweet). Another bonus is the beer selection at Cedars. If you look in their coolers you can see a huge selection of imported (and some local) beers that you've probably never heard of. Give em a try, its fun. The service, while very good, seems a bit overbearing sometimes. There have been times when I went out with four people and there was four servers around our table, pouring water and bringing out our food. It's like they are always hovering around to fill your water as soon as it's not full. Some might like this, but it gets a little old. Nonetheless, Cedars has made my list as one of my favorite Seattle restaurants. more

Not so good Indian Food Found Here 9/24/2005

Though I have yet to find an Indian-food restaurant that I really like in Seattle, I know enough to say that I will try my hardest to avoid visiting Cedars again. They use too much ghee and the dal didn't taste anything like it should. The curries are supposedly pre-prepared and I think they cook their meat separately and add it at the last minute -- which doesn't result in a good meal. As other reviewers have said, the wait staff makes you feel like you need to hurry and get out of the restaurant as quickly as possible...although I've also heard the rumors about the tips not making it to the servers so maybe they all are harboring pent up rage about their job. One positive could be their Naan and tandoori dishes, but otherwise I would recommend looking elsewhere. more

Butter Marsala is to die for 5/24/2005

May I suggest the butter marsala dish with nan. This is the best indian food you will ever find in seattle for sure. What a great little nook in the middle of the worst area of the u-district! The service is great (a great server to customer ratio, he he) and more often than not the manager/owner will throw in a free dessert for a loyal customer. more

Cedar's has some of the best Indian food in Seattle. The menu isn't very adventuresome, but what they make, they make well. The restaurant also has a great selection of beer. The one downfall is that the place is popular, so they try to increase the turnover rate with insane service. I have had waiters try to take the bill without even having looked at it yet. It's not the type of place to linger with friends after the meal. more

how can 2 Cedars locations be so different 4/22/2005

There are two Cedars locations, both in the Univ District - this post is about the bigger one. see my post on the small original Cedars location also located in the U District and you'll see what the source of my confusion is. now, I've heard that this big Cedars also serves Indian food and I've heard that it's great - that might very well be the case (although I haven't tried it yet). I'm basically just judging the falafel which seemed to me to be absolutely inferior here, whereas it's always great at the smaller location. not to mention that the service is strangely overdone here whereas they seem friendly and down-to-earth at the smaller one. does anyone have an explanation for that? more

Great tip from Blake - Cedars does good Indian 3/11/2005

Thanks to Blake Hamamoto for the tip. I've tried most of the Indian restaurants in North Seattle, with generally disappointing results. Today a friend and I went to Cedars for lunch, and it's my new favorite pick for Indian food in Seattle. Granted, it was a sunny spring day and we sat outside, so some of the positives were provided by mother nature. But instead of a sad, soggy lunch buffet, Cedars offers a la carte service at both lunch and dinner. We didn't try the full breadth of the menu, but the chicken tikka masala was excellent, the bengan bartha surprisingly good (considering that I don't love eggplant), and the naan fresh, hot and buttery. Per Blake's warning, the service was somewhat indifferent, but the solid food and pleasant outdoor seating more than made up for it. If you're looking for good Indian food in Seattle, look no further - Cedars is the new champeen. more

Best Indian Food in Seattle 3/9/2005

Cedars is hands down the best Indian food available in Seattle. Located in the heart of the U-District across from Safeway on 50th. When I was in college I would go there at least once a month. The only drawback to this place is that it can sometimes be crowded and hard to get a table. Don't bother with reservations because they almost never get you in any sooner. Possibly the worst at seating people in the order that they arrived. The owner is not that cool either. At times you feel like he is trying to rush you through your meal and I heard rumors that if you leave a tip the waiters never receive it...he keeps it himself. Despite all of these bad factors I would still strongly recommend going and getting some hot nan and curry. The food is good enough to outweigh the negatives. Get a take out order! more

Indian and Mediteranean food in one place 9/7/2004

Yet another U-District Indian restaurant - but with a few more options than most of the others. Cedars actually serves a selection of Mediterranean food as well as Indian, though I've only tried the Indian. It also has a small store of Indian food. There is some pleasent outdoor seating for good weather, and the atmosphere inside is bright, between the presence of lots of white and the large windows. The service is very good, but Cedars is often very noisy and crowded, due to its popularity. Because of this, you may want to go elsewhere on its busier nights. Fortunately, Jewel of India, the Tandoor, and the Bombay Grill are all within walking distance (within five blocks), so if you arrive and find it packed, the other options are nearly as good. Rumor has it that the menu at another near-by restaurant Taste of India is identical except that there is no Mediteranean food at Taste of India; I haven't confirmed this, but have heard the rumor from two sources who claimed first-hand knowledge. more
