Mystery Fans - Bring Your Visa 3/22/2006

This store is stocked to the ceiling and back again with all kinds of great used books. I've found great history selections, Washington DC themed stuff and very kitschy cookbooks. The fiction room is well stocked and is a good place to find older editions of a book that just had the movie come out (nice to avoid Jude Law peering at you while you read Cold Mountain). But the best bit is the mystery section where you can find things you didn't even know you were looking for. I've filled in older books in a series, found British editions with airport receipts still in them, and re-read the spy novels of my junior high days for decent prices. Just don't sneeze - the stacks are precarious but that is part of the charm. more

Very cool store 8/16/2005

What to say? THere are books everywhere. In piles on the floor, falling off bookshelves, lining the staircase to the second floor, in the (non-functional) refrigerator--even in the bathroom. This store is worth a visit if not for the amazing selection, the experience (though they discourage the taking of pictures). Prepare to spend some money too! more

Not wonks only 8/16/2005

Capitol Hill Books has a good variety of used and collectable books just across the street from Eastern Market. The shop is a bit cramped, but, hey, it's a used bookstore. Charming but occasionally curt staff; whatever, they know their stuff. With some snooping, you can find a gem -- maybe a book Ted Kennedy used as a coaster? more

Books on the Hill 8/15/2005

Capitol Hill is in no way lacking in bookstores, and this one doesn't stand out for me as particularly distinctive, but it is still a nice feature of DC that it has spawned so many local bookshops. As one might expect in the political center of the nation, the books here tend toward the political, though with a nice blend of history and literature sprinkled throughout. Ask the staff for their recommendations--and if they've spied any politicos lately! more

No free lunch, but how about a free book 8/13/2005

In a city (and area) where nothing is cheap, Capitol Hill books offers something for free. Although this dealer of used, rare, and signed books is not necessarily a bargain INSIDE the store, they do put out a box (or two or three) of free books almost daily. No strings attached. True, most of the books and magazines are things most people would never think twice (or once) about reading, but occasionally, a treasure does come up. Surprise yourself. more
