Vace makes their pizzas with old country flair - the sauce is on top of the cheese. And what sauce it is, delicious and garlic laden. The toppings are fantastic here and the white pizzas work just as well as the reds. This is the best pie in town, for my money (or my bosses' money, it makes for a great office feast). I can;t comment on their other items becasue I never get past the pizza on the menu - it's too good a treat to pass up.

This is not a gourmet, impress your friends pizza joint. This is more of "the game's on" or "what's for dinner?" genre and it delivers the goods. The crust is really good and very fresh. The toppings are decent, the sauce yummy. What more do you need, really? There's parking in the back if you are picking one up to take advantage of the carry-out specials. The veggie pizza is a monster and you can feel slightly less guilty having worked towards your 5 a day.

If you are sick of seeing the same items over and over at the supermarket, Rodman*s is sure to surprise you. They have a fantastic wine department and the downstairs carries a wide range of home goods (watch repair and an excellent pharmacy too). The real attraction, for me, is the dry goods aisles that are stocked with treats from all over the world. They have Polish sweets, Arabic spices and British brands that anyone who has grown up overseas will be delighted to find. The tea selection is also very good, lots of types of rooibos (red tea) I've not seen elsewhere. You can put together a nice party spread here that won't put a huge dent in your budget. They also have a wonderful global candy selection - you can get a serious marzipan fix here. Rodman*s goes all out for the holidays; this is THE place to put together a Christmas stocking or an Easter basket for your favorite foodie. Also, because they have many elderly customers, you can find some retro items in the grocery and personal care departments that no one else has (think badger brush shaving kits and ingredients you've never seen outside of Grandma's kitchen). There's free parking in the back, which is good because you'll want to browse longer than the meter will let you.

When so many of us diligently try to support small businesses, independent bookstores and the like it is nice to have an option for independent movie going as well. The info in the lobby will tell you all about how concerned citizens rallied to save their own piece of the silver screen, but beyond the civic pride this is a great place to see a movie. Theater One is the main attraction - an old school big, red curtained screen with warm acoustics, nice seats and a gorgeous mural overhead. Theater Two is much smaller and generic compared to the treasure downstairs but it is intimate. The Avalon often pays host to opening nights by local filmmakers and to film festivals. In an era of big-box blandness it is lovely to support a movie theater that supports the community in return.

This is a straight-up BBQ joint, ribs & chicken, the usual sides and out the door you go a very happy camper. If you're in the neighborhood when the smoker is fired up it is very hard to resist. Don't bother trying - go get some. If you are eating in work clothes or need to return to face other people without the benefit of a garden hose, order the sauce on the side because this is a full body, up one side of your face and down the other kind of affair. Kenny's also provides a very affordable catering service even for small parties - I had an indoor BBQ birthday party in December that was lip smacking and hard to beat the next year. When they say large they mean LARGE so be prepared to eat some tomorrow. Heck, go ahead and order the large and save yourself the trip going back tomorrow! Pick your side items carefully - they are a little on the bland side but that's nothing a little hot sauce can't fix. You can't go wrong with the greens.

When I go to Lebanese Taverna it is usually because I am hungry for the garlic sauce and will go order a sandwich with which to enjoy my favorite condiment. There are an every growing number of LT's, one family's local business venture that keeps getting bigger. This version in Silver Spring is one where you order at the counter instead of at the table and the prices are much lower than the Woodley Park dining experince (which has its own charms). The chicken shwarma is fantastic, the hummus always perfect. There are chef specials too if you can stop ordering your favorites (I can't). For some reason the falafel sandwiches are always too dry - eat them on a mezza platter which samples everything instead. This is a great place for a confirmed meat eater and a vegetarian to dine together in harmony. Monday nights they have half price sandwiches. Ask for extra garlic sauce!

This quiet bookstore is a great place to get lost in the stacks. The books are well chosen, you won't find just anything here. The history & political science sections are strong, I've found good poetry here, and the fiction section does not disappoint. My favorite sections to browse are the gardening & home design walls and the Washington, DC section, which is very strong. The staff is very helpful and easy to talk to. They take trade ins of used books - take the store credit option, set up a tab and have a look around. Riverby will reward you each time.

This store is stocked to the ceiling and back again with all kinds of great used books. I've found great history selections, Washington DC themed stuff and very kitschy cookbooks. The fiction room is well stocked and is a good place to find older editions of a book that just had the movie come out (nice to avoid Jude Law peering at you while you read Cold Mountain). But the best bit is the mystery section where you can find things you didn't even know you were looking for. I've filled in older books in a series, found British editions with airport receipts still in them, and re-read the spy novels of my junior high days for decent prices. Just don't sneeze - the stacks are precarious but that is part of the charm.

Dr. Jensen works at the Friendship Heights Chiropractic clinic and is the best chiropractor I have ever experienced. The office is brisk & efficient, they can get you in fast if you are in an emergency pain level situation. They are also fantastic at figuring out exactly what your insurance will cover. Dr. Connelly is also in the practice and he is also a fine practitioner of the art of adjustment.

This place is cheap and this place is good. Grab a pair of chopsticks, throw the beansprouts in and eat up. There is just one think to order here: pho, steaming hot Vietnamese soup. Do you want a big bowl or a bigger bowl? Pick a cut of beef or choose the chicken, it'll be at the table fast. A plate of sprouts, basil, hot peppers & other herbs comes with it. Chuck them in to the hot broth and slurp away. It tastes good on rainy days, when you're coming down with something or when you need something hot hot hot (you control how spicy it is at the table with the add-ins and condiments). This place is unglamorous, but that's not what you are here for. You want a big bowl of pho and you are in good hands.
