People from the midwest call carbonated beverages pop, while most other people call them soda. Neither is especially accurate, but the battle rages on. This store has clearly taken sides, throwing the weight of their well-designed clothes for men and women behind the midwest. Curious, then, that the fashions should be so modern and unlike the stereotypes of the midwest. Perhaps they're really teaching us that we shouldn't be so closed minded as to accept stereotypes? In any case, the clothes and accessories are cool, and the service is friendly but not overbearing.

This is a day spa that caters to busy professionals or anyone with a wad they want to spend on themselves. Its theme is "recycled," which sounds dumb but looks cool, and makes you feel better about spending a lot of money that you might spend actually improving the world. Your world, however, will be much improved by the massages and other spa treatments they offer. They are pricy, though.

This is a new design store specializing in modern/contemporary furniture. A good selection and a nice, relaxing space. This is especially welcoming in the midst of Georgetown's crowds; not too many rude 19 year-olds think to visit this shop, so it is something of an oasis. Check out the other stores and architecture in Cady's Alley; it is a great "urban renewal" project.

A DC institution. A large store with a great selection of music, especially classical. Their book selection is also impressive. Think of it as a local Borders and you'll get the idea. They have some great specials, a wonderful staff, no problem special ordering, and a pretty generous return policy, in case you get a stinker.

This shop used to be in DuPont, but now has a much bigger selection of new and used vinyl. Good punk selection. They also have a dance floor. If you like to browse over records in person, rather than just on eBay, it is worth the trip. Some hard-to-find albums and remarkable variety. They can also help you track things down.

A great shop, especially for those who love books on politics. I am not one of them, but I have many friends who, occasionally to my dismay, are, and who love to talk about it incessantly. They should come here for better company. It is also a great place to relax and browse. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful in ordering books they don't carry.

This small but well-stocked bookstore specializes in gay and lesbian titles and related gay and lesbian "themed" merchandise (postcards, cards, pencils, etc). It is a welcoming place and, at a time when the neighborhood is becoming less idenfiably gay and more identifiably yuppie, a good reminder of how DuPont's popularity as a gentrifying neighborhood began.

Framing is always expensive, but this is more expensive than it needs to be. There aren't a lot of alternatives, though, so you may have to suck it up. The quality of work is very good, and the service is pretty accommodating of changes and suggestions. You can probably find a better deal if you have a car and go outside the district. They occasionally have 50% off framing specials, so if you can wait you can ask when they'll be doing that.

My friends stayed here about 6 months ago, and while they were pleased with the service and the nice/oddtouches, like the sherry service, they weren't thrilled with the decor or the furnishings. Apparently it could use an update. Some of the rooms may be noisy at certain times of day. It is more like a hotel than a B&B. It is convenient to DuPont, and can be a good deal.

This B&B is a great place to recommend to friends and family who come visit if you a) don't have enough room or b) don't have enough patience. Also excellent for special occasions like weddings. I heard about this place from a friend and can happily pass on the recommendation; when my relatives stayed there, they received excellent, friendly and knowledgeable service. The price is the only downside, but their rates vary over the course of the year and can even be ... reasonable ... sometimes. They have a number of rooms at different rates, so you can pick the one that best suits your budget. Reserve well in advance during busy periods.
