P&P is one of if not THE best independent bookstores in D.C. With two floors of books, there is tons to rummage through in this place. They have all the new releases and fad books that the chain stores that start with B have, but so much more. They have a lot more of the independent writings, as well as some of the smaller literary magazines that you can only find on college campuses. There is an adorable children's section and a coffee shop with tasty treats. There are monthly book clubs for the interested. But best of all for any avid reader, PP is a frequent stop for all kinds of authors on book tours or just in the neighborhood.

I am writing this review for the DC Second Story because unfortunately the one in Bethesda was forced to close. Anyway, Second Story has great prices and a unique, eclectic, excellent selection of famous and obscure books. This applies to records as well. The staff is composed of helpful book lovers. This is a local establishment, and you'd do well to stop by.

Lambda Rising is a great little bookstore in Dupont Circle, with a focus on the gay and lesbian community. Besides a multitude of books, they carry a good selection of other stuff, including dvds, cds, magazines and novelty gift items. The staff is very friendly, helpful and always seem to be having a good time. I'm not too familiar with this aspect, but it's my understanding that the store does a lot of community outreach, too.

One of my favorite places in DC! It's a combination cafe, bar and independent bookstore. Unlike some cafe/bookshops, the food is creatively prepared and delicious. Check out the basil shrimp pasta and the incredibly decadent brownie sundae. The crowd tends to be a friendly mix of young and old, heavy on locals and yuppies with many reading their new purchases over a class of wine on the outdoor patio.

Any congressperson that writes a book - from Dick Armey to Hillary Clinton - does a book signing ceremony at Trover Books on Capitol Hill. The store has a great selection of political paraphenalia as well as plenty of books on a wide range of topics. Plus, the staff at the bookstore is knowledgeable and courteous.

I love the magazine selection at this Borders. They also have a nice cafe that serves coffee and tea drinks and snacks. The book selection is pretty good, and the staff is very helpful if you're looking for a specific book. There's a bargain section where you can get older hardbacks for less than $10. They also sell cards and gift wrap, and around holidays they sell themed gifts.

What to say? THere are books everywhere. In piles on the floor, falling off bookshelves, lining the staircase to the second floor, in the (non-functional) refrigerator--even in the bathroom. This store is worth a visit if not for the amazing selection, the experience (though they discourage the taking of pictures). Prepare to spend some money too!

Idle Time Books is right in the heart of Adams-Morgan. It is a great place to spend some time, looking through their many shelves. The store has two levels - the upstairs has a great politics section. The philosophy, religion, and biography sections are especially noteworthy. An excellent used bookstore.

More
Kramer Books and the attached Afterwords cafe in the back is one of the cornerstones of the Dupont Circle neighborhood. The independent bookstore seems to be most popular among the 20-30-something lobbyist/Hill crowd, but other folks come here too. If you're looking for discount books, go down the street to the discount bookstore right on the circle. Come here for the wide variety of literature and nonfiction, right down to the very obscure. You could spend hours in here reading off the shelves -- there's even a whole shelf of travel essays and diaries. Kramer's was doing the mix of book shopping and eating long before Border's and other big chains. Afterwords is not the kind of place that would draw you for the food alone, but the menu is decent, the enclosed sidewalk cafe has some atmosphere and entrées are inexpensive or moderately priced. Last I checked, they were open all night Fridays and Saturdays (but check ahead on this).
