Coppola's Place In North Beach Is Great These Days 6/7/2007

Cafe Zoetrope is one of my favorite spots in the neighborhood. They serve great food, including the best pizzas around - try the Quattro Formaggi, it is fantastic. They have crisp, perfect panini, a stellar Caesar, and very solid pastas, so there is something for everyone. They've expanded to a few non-Coppola wines, which is a definite step forward (sorry Francis - that new Pinot Reserve is great, my man!), and the staff is friendly and attentive. And they have a North Beach icon behind the bar, the garrulous Peter, who has spent his entire life in 'The Beach'. Go sit at the bar with Peter, or have a two-glass lunch on the patio on a nonwindy afternoon, and you'll see what I'm talking about. Pros: Food, Gorgeous Staff, Perfect Location Cons: Champagne In A Can more

Terrible Service 4/28/2007

Everything should be good about this place. Its in a cool building, great history, owned by Francis Ford Copolla. But my experience there was extremely disappointing. Went there for lunch with parents visiting from out of town and everyone was underwhelmed. Terrible service (so slow and unattentive), mediocre food, and an otherwise unforgetting dining experience. Pros: Interesting history Cons: Terrible service more

Great food value and atmosphere 2/14/2006

As a tourist walking the North Beach neighborhood looking for a restful but sophisiticated place to eat, I stumbled upon the Coppola Cafe. I was seated promptly and had good service. The pasta was excellent, but the bread a bit cold/stale. The Coppola wine tasters made up for this! Finished my meal with an excellent white chocholate-dipped sorbet nad wonderful espresso. I also bought the Coppola Cabernet -- excellent buy with the discount! Highly recommended for ambience as well -- it is unbelievable to see the list of movies which have been made in that very building. Pros: historic, ambience, value more

best italian food in town 5/7/2005

the very best italian food and I'm italian born and raised, if you're looking for best italian food in town (specially pizza) definetively go there. Service also was excellent server, bartender and both managers were always there to assist me and my girlfriend. I'll go back there soon Pros: romantic, music, service Cons: no good x kids more

The worst service ever 3/9/2005

My girlfriends took me out for my birthday to Coppola and after waiting an hour we were finally able to signal the waiters attention to order our food. The meal was fine - nothing spectacular. Once we were finished with our meal and wine the waiter came over to our table no more than 3 minutes after we paid the bill and asked us to leave the table. He did not explain why but just asked us to go to the bar. I have never in 10 years of being in San Francisco ever been asked to give up my table! Especially while still sipping the last of my wine. I would not recommend this place - there are far more friendlier places up the street. Cons: bad service, rude more

Nice Flights! 8/15/2003

A sunny day, cars whizzing by and a delicious pizza only added to the divine wine flight. If only they had a bigger selection. 3 different wines in taster sizes, wonderful! Pros: Wine flights, pizza Cons: boring menu more

Niebaum Sucks 1/21/2003

No water was delivered after promised. No butter delivered after promised. Then received a mystery charge of some kind on my VISA bill. I called the restaurant to verify why it had happened since I gave no tip to the waitress. This is the first place I have EVER been that charges some kind of mystery fee and then gives it back to you. Supposedly required by VISA. If you want service, go elsewhere. Cons: service, service, service more
