Amazing sushi, affordable, great experience! 4/10/2008

Yes, the place is crowded, but definitely worth the wait. I was here on a Tuesday night for a birthday dinner with my significant other. We arrived around 7pm, and the place was already packed, but we only waited for about 10-15 minutes. When you write your name on the board, write""S/T"" if you don't care if you sit at the sushi bar or table. Only caveat is if you sit at the bar, you can only order sushi, but that's all I order anyway. The sushi is amazing! So we sat at the bar and ordered: 2 spicy tuna rolls, salmon, tuna, yellowtail, salmon skin roll, yellowtail roll (b/c they were out of the spicy codfish roll), spanish mackerel, scallop special, unagi and cucumber roll, and albacore. And green tea and miso soup. Yes, a lot of food, but we like to eat! My favorites were the spanish mackerel, spicy tuna roll, salmon, and yellowtail. I didn't like the salmon skin roll or scallop special. The total bill was around $55 for the two of us. I love this place. As others have said, it's very simple, clean, fresh sushi - no fancy rolls here. Definitely will be back. Highly recommend. Pros: fresh sushi, quick service, parking (lot or around neighborhood) Cons: crowded, usually a wait, cash only more

Honest Sushi & Japanese Dishes - Not trendy or flashy 3/24/2008

For those of you who think spending loads of $ and a beautiful, trendy ambience translates to great Japanese food - please go to Nobu and the like. But if you like the freshest fish available and a fair size piece at that on rice, good teriyaki and combo plates with generous portions - Hide's is the best. They only get what's fresh (Fish) - so there may be days when they don't have the kind of fish you want, but if it's not fresh you shouldn't want it either. Owner is Japanese and the ""Itamaisan's"" are Japanese. Pleasant & traditional professionals - not rock and roll, flashy sushi chef wannabee's. Best bets - Salmon skin salad, Salmon or Beef Teriyaki a la carte with sushi or sahimi on the side or as appetizer. (My Mom's from Japan and she's picky - we go there often) If you go often - they get to know you and the chef's will let you know your favorite fish is in - so you don't miss out. Pros: Fresh Fish, Good portions, Valet Parking Cons: Busy, Small sushi Counter, Crowded room more

Best bang-for-your-buck Sushi 1/9/2008

You can't find a better place for the quality of sushi you'll get here at a relatively affordable price. It's easily better than your Sushi Macs but still a notch lower than your Nobus of the world. Pros: Excellent value Cons: can be a long wait more

Excellent prices, excellent FREH fish, great chefs 1/3/2008

Hide. Hide. Hide. I go here at least once a week. The chef on the left corner is funny, as well as great. The fish is always top notch in terms of taste, as well as freshness. Prices are great as well. If I am looking for both rolls as well as sushi, there is no other place in my books. On average, I come out very satisfied on about $40 including tax and tip. There are a few downsides to this place, although I'd still highly recommend it.\r \r Parking is a headache unless you park it in their free lot, no fresh wasabi or real ginger, and THE WAIT!! Sometimes over 45minutes for the bar. Go early to avoid most of the stress. Pros: Excellent fish. Great prices Cons: No fresh wasabi/ginger, difficult parking, long wait more

BEST SUSHI EVER!! 1/1/2008

Hide is the best sushi in Los Angeles based on cost & quality. Its a cash based place and they have a very thoughtful atm machine inside to make it easy. The combination meals are the bomb. i have never had better tempura anywhere. its the right amount of crispy and hot. The tuna is unbelievable and the only place i will eat salmon sushi is at hide. 2 people can eat... a lot for about $50.00. I thought that sushi roku was the best based on fish freshness but hide is way way better. Its family style sushi, not a lot of atmosphere but excellent food. if you go on an off time ( 2pm on a weekend) you can get seated easily otherwise expect a wait thats well worth it. Pros: very fresh fish Cons: ambience more

salmon skin salad and then some... 11/25/2007

I have been going to Hide for about 10 years now. Although, it is cash only and often very crowded and closes earlier then most sushi restaurants, I think it is one of the best in L.A. The fish is always fresh and the salmon skin salad is killer...if it's your first time you might want to go for lunch and then move up to dinner, then you know the wait is worth it. more

Not bad, but not the best 11/18/2007

After being told by numerous people how fabulous this no-frills sushi joint was, I had to try it. Upon first glance, things looked pretty promising: ""Cash Only"" signs dress the walls, Japanese orders fly through the air and lines of customers eagerly wait to be seated at the cramped sushi bar or tables. But once we began to place our order (salmon nigiri, tuna, albacore) we realized there really aren't any rolls on the menu! The fish was fresh, but it wasn't mind-blowing. The salmon could have been more buttery and the miso was just okay. All in all, not a bad experience, but certainly not among my must-try L.A. sushi spots. Pros: Casual & unpretentious Cons: No rolls! more

The Worst Customer Service EVER! 11/12/2007

I have been hearing about Hide as being a great place for great sushi for a great price for the past few years now. Finally, I made the 10 minute journey to Hide with my friend and boyfriend on a Saturday evening. I was excited. The place was very crowded and very small, but I didn't mind waitng 30-45 minutes for what I expected to be one of the greatest sushi experiences ever. \r \r Our name was called and the hostess gestured to a two person table in front of us--which was perfectly fine except that there were three people in our party. We kindly explained to the hostess that there were three of us and could we be seated at the two open tables across the way. She said that we could not as those tables were for four people and there were only three of us. I could have understood this if it weren't for the fact that in front of us was a four person table occupied by a couple (who I'm sure jumped the line), their adorable baby and a gigantic stroller--which they really should have left outside. \r \r When we explained this injustice to the hostess, she said it was the restaurant's policy (still not really clear on what their policy is), it was busy night and that there was nothing she could do. Naturally, we asked for a manager. The hostess came back with a kid who seemed to have very little experience with customers and whose main job was obviously in the kitchen as he approached us sweaty with an apron and chef's hat. He again saw no problem seating 3 adults at a 2 person table at which one of the ""seats"" was in the restaurant's main walkway and was partially blocked by a 10-foot plant. \r \r The hostess and the ""manager"" refused to seat us at the open tables and did not care that they were losing our business. We made sure to create a scene and left cold, hungry, and angry. I'm sure the sushi's great, but now I will never know. Cons: too crowded, small, poor management, extremely poor customer service, doesn't seem customer-oriented more

I felt like I was back in Japan! 9/3/2007

I went to Japan last summer and Hide Sushi reminds me of a typical sushi joint in Japan. It's small, basic, but has fantastic quality fish. It bl0ws my mind away at how fresh the fish is, yet for such an inexpensive price. Hide has a small, basic menu that lacks in creativity...but that's what I love about it! It's traditional and for REAL sushi lovers. Most people who claim to love sushi eat rolls packed with so many ingredients that it fails to showcase the most important ingrediant...the fish! So if you love the sushi more than the crispy rice, cream cheese, fried rolls, go to Hide...it's worth the wait (don't take reservations). Pros: Quality of fish, price Cons: No rezos more

not the best tasting sushi. not much choices. but can't beat the price. long lines. good if on a budget. more

Worth the wait 7/7/2007

Great sushi deal 5/16/2007

This place is reasonably priced, and the food is very good. Also, it's not intimidating like some of the higher-end sushi-only places. Unagi is always exceptionally tasty. My non-sushi favorite is the scallop dynamite--yummmmm!!!! The wait can be long, but that's part of the fun (although on Friday night, it's way too long). Pros: good food, fair price Cons: long wait, cash only more

good sushi 5/16/2007

Nice place to eat good quality sushi w/ friends. If I'm not in a hurry, I would definitely go back again. Pros: sushi Cons: waiting for a table and parking more

Great Sushi, Affordable prices. 5/10/2007

Hide Sushi is wonderful! My boyfriend and I wandered into this restaurant about a month ago. We were pleasantly surprised by the freshness of the sashimi and sushi and the thickness of the cuts (not paper-thin, but not too thick). I highly recommend the hirame (halibut), hamachi (yellow tail tuna), and sake (salmon). All were fresh, buttery, and tender (not mushy). We also ordered tempura which was just OK (I must admit I'm extremely picky with my tempura because my grandmother makes THE best tempura in the world!). Overall, i would highly recommend this restaurant. In fact, I've been back twice since then, and it was the same great experience. \r \r Some tips: Get there before 7PM, or you may have to wait over an hour for a table (this place is no secret!). Also, there is street parking only, which is a nightmare! Take the bus or a taxi if you live close by. If not, be prepared to parallel park! Pros: Fresh, extremely tasty sushi. Cons: Street parking is a nightmare!! Long wait for table more

Good food, But.... 8/30/2006

I have been eating here since early 80s when they were located next to the garden supply place on Sawtelle (Now I am really dating myself.) The food has always been better than good, some times exceptional but never below good, and that is a lot to be said about a sushi place. But in the past few years, the other stuff has made eating here almost not worth it. First of all, the wait is horrendous (sometimes 60-90 minutes), second, they close so early, so in summer time, better be hungry at 7:00. To make things worst, they only accept cash, try to take out 8 people for Sushi with a $500 bill and have to fork out cash. So go at your own risk. Pros: Fresh Fish Cons: Long wait, short hours, Cash only more

There's a reason why it's so packed 8/23/2006

Man this place is great... if all you want is a some real sushi, and you don't really care about all the other fluff, then this is the place for you. Okay, so the dishware is kinda worn... but it's what's served on them that counts! There are no fancy rolls and stuff, but the fish there is awesome. I tried most of the fish on the menu and they are delicous... they have such buttery hamachi... the maguro and scallops taste so fresh. Unagi came out hot from the oven, and perfectly tender and sweet, with just the right amount (moderate) of sauce to highlight its flavor. Though I didn't get a California roll, one of my friends did and they used real crab (and it was good apparently). There isn't much else (cooked) on the menu, and no exotic fish varieties, but with the quality of what they do have, you don't want anything else. The prices are a GREAT deal too... I paid less than 8 bucks for an order of AWESOME toro, which is unheard of in this area! I don't mind paying only cash because it's definitely worth it. I used to wonder why there were huge lines always, but now I know and I'm part of them! Pros: Delicious fish at an unbeatable price Cons: Service is so-so, and ambience is just "EAT!" Of less importance, small non-sushi menu more

Simple, Fresh Sushi (no fluff) 8/5/2006

My family and I have been going to Hide Sushi for more years than I care to count. It's a place that satisfies my traditional Japanese parents palatte (ex: Chirashi) as well as my Japanese-American taste buds. Their lunch specials with tempura and teriyaki beef/chicken are excellent for those with non-fish eating friends as well. This place is small, cozy (30-40 seats) and well-priced for its high quality fish. The seat selection process (i.e. a whiteboard where you fill in the number of people in your party, etc.) is quite innovative and keeps the process transparent. It's cash only, so remember to go the ATM before coming. And if you forget, there's one in the restaurant. Pros: Super Fresh and Simple Sushi Cons: Cash Only; No reservations more

amazing spicy scallop roll! 6/25/2006

hide sushi is a great place for a mellow night of good sushi. with its bright lights and bare decor, this is a place that is more about the food than the ambience (though everyone there is very friendly, adding to the enjoyable dining experience). their fish is always very fresh (the salmon is excellent), and their spicy scallop sushi/roll is so good that i hesitate to order it anywhere else because it just never is as good. Pros: the sushi Cons: the wait more
