Wonderful Food, & Experience! I love this place

Worst

I know that this place is a landmark, However, i do not know what the big deal is. I have eaten there 3 times, and I always come away saying ""I've had better"". The food is OK, ...

Great food for a high price 7/1/2007

I loved the barn. First and foremost, the food was incredible and the service was superb. That's the first thing I look for in a restaurant and it does not disappoint. Some of the horror stories from below must either be malicious comments from competitors, or simply people who had terrible luck, but whose experience is not necessarily indicative of the restaurant's overall quality. I say this because nothing about our night was even somewhat disappointing when it came to food and service.\r \r Moving on, you should know that the place really is a barn. The novelty wears thin a bit, but it does feel more casual than the menu's price would suggest, and of all the expensive restaurants I've eaten at in the past, I felt more comfortable in the Angus Barn than anywhere else.\r \r Also, my wife and I are somewhat young. The clientele of the Barn is not. I saw a lot of gray hair, which is not necessarily a bad thing (the restaurant was not loud and I never felt annoyed by the people around us), but it does mean that if you're looking for a hip dining experience, this isn't it. Expensive? Yes. Trendy? No.\r \r The food is very expensive, but there is a lot of it. Everyone gets a complementary basket of crackers with two fabulous cheese dips, and a plate of ""relish"" which includes firm, juicy olives, pickle spears, celery and peppers. It's great, and it starts to fill you up. You'll never lack something to snack on while waiting for your food. Speaking of dinner, there's a lot of it. Feel free to order an appetizer as an entree, or share with your friend. You'll save cash this way. Try the wine sampler, too, for a nice and varied selection.\r \r Unless you plan on sharing, I would only recommend eating at the Angus Barn on special occasions. Our bill was about $115.00, before tip.\r \r Be prepared for a homey interior. Because of this and the price, it's an odd choice for the special occasion, but the food and service is definitely worth it. Pros: unparalelled beef, great food, helpful and attentive service, lots of food, seated immediately Cons: homey country atmosphere, older crowd, not terribly private or intimate, expensive more

Disappointed in the food and service 6/22/2007

We went to Angus Barn on June 22 to celebrate a family birthday and graduation. There were four of us and we all started with a salad which was good. Then we waited another hour for our steaks to arrive, during which time our server never came to check on us or refill drinks. Our steaks finally arrived, room temperature and overcooked. Since we had been there almost two hours by then, we returned our vegetables to be warmed and ate the rest. We would definitely not choose Angus Barn again for a nice steak dinner. Cons: Food, service, value more

Best Steak in the World 5/31/2007

The Angus Barn is absolutely fantastic. French/Italian underpinnings to every Meat/fish dish. The Wine Bar is exquisite. more

Not Worth the Price, Head to Outback for better steaks and service 4/15/2007

Slow service, it took forever for our drink and food orders to be taken... even longer for them to arrive and they were watery because the ice had melted. My family order a variety of steaks, I had the filet, and we all decided that we should have gone to Outback for a better meal. The steaks were average, service slow, atmosphere tense and price undeservingly extravagant. more

Great Environment, Decent Food 2/1/2007

Angus Barn provided myself and dinner companion with a comfortable atmosphere. I did not encounter a pretentious wait staff, which is often the case in fine dining establishments. While the pre-meal environment and experience was very pleasant and enjoyable, when my food arrived I was less than impressed. My girlfriend and I both had steak. She had filet, I a NY Strip. She enjoyed hers, I thought mine was OK. Coming into the experience, I understood that half of the meal ticket was associated with the environment, but where did the rest of my money go?! The steak was prepared properly, cooked to the requested temperature (MR), but lacked flavor. It tasted like a steak I could have prepared for 1/5 of the cost. So, while my experience was pleasant, the food left me unimpressed. This steak doesn't make my top 5 in Raleigh, let alone the Triangle. The Angus Barn sells you a high end luxury car, but sneaks in an economic underwhelming motor . It has a beautiful finish, and makes you feel great while you are in it, proudly displaying it to all of your friends (environment, experience). The Accord Motor is reliable, and very functional, but does not have the performance you would expect for the price tag (food). Bottom Line: you're paying for the environment, not food. Pros: Great Environment, Scenery, Friendly Staff Cons: Food lacks ""mmph"" more

EXCELLENT 12/18/2006

Always...withouot fail, this place is awesome, consistent, a very excellent experience. The food is ALWAYS outstanding, the service is Always outstsanding....can't say enough about our experiences here at Angus Barn. We've even called them in advance and let them know that there would be a special occasion or a special situation going on with someone we were going with, and they ALWAYS go above and beyond with their personal kindness. This is all that sets this place apart from others.....go....and enjoy. Pros: everything more

Awkward experience in Wild Turkey Lounge 12/17/2006

Dinner has been excellent every time and we've been there about once a year since 1979. We had an awkward and unpleasant experience in the Wild Turkey Lounge, though, and as a result, my parents won't return. The 4 of us were each on our second drink and were enjoying the complimentary olives, celery, and cheeses when a wait person or a manager came over to us and asked the men what our intentions were. We were dumbfounded. We said we were on a waiting list to be seated but that they had told us that it was very busy that night. Essentially, we were hoping to eat dinner there but weren't certain if we would be able to and the men were checking with the hostesses downstairs periodically. The drinks are $7 or $8 apiece and we didn't feel we were ""freeloading"" on the food. We'd been there about 20 to 30 minutes. We honestly have no idea what the waiter (or manager) was upset about, but we felt we were paying customers, and we were certainly quiet in our conversations and we were well-dressed. Perhaps he wanted our seats for someone who had definite reservations for dinner. It was indeed crowded and there were people looking for seats in the bar. We felt very uncomfortable, unwanted, embarrased, and insulted. We paid the bill for the four drinks and left. It truly ruined our evening to be treated in that manner and to be totally mystified as to the reason why. more

Holiday Fun! 12/8/2006

My company hosted a Holiday party here and I was very impressed! We had cocktails upstairs near an inviting fireplace while we waited for our table to be set-up. My boss knows a lot of people that work here and they really made us feel at home. The holiday decorations were festive and really put us in the mood to celebrate. I really enjoyed the stuffed shrimp that I ate. The servers were on point and I will be back! Pros: Excellent food, wine selection and staff. Cons: When very busy it was a little crowded in the bar area. more

great steaks! 11/13/2006

I went with a large family group, and had a very yummy filet mignon there! The server was very knowledgeable and courteous. It took a while to get our food, but that was probably because of the size of our group. Since last going there, I've become a vegetarian, so I look forward to returning and checking out their vegetarian options. Pros: food, ambience, ample parking Cons: can be a little noisy more

A french opinion 11/12/2006

I am proud to say I was there. Yes indeed its is a nice place to eat. For a special occasion, like mine was a few years back, it's great. Food and staff, wine i don't know i only drink coke. for a french it's unusual i know.\r Memories are made of that.\r Paul Landelle Pros: food staff ambience Cons: noise may be more

Not a place for denim 11/2/2006

The food is outstanding and so is the atmosphere. Service is superb, even if you are in a barn. Great place to impress!!! Pros: amazing food, service and atmosphere Cons: quite expensive more

Avoid the Angus Barn Altogether 9/1/2006

I used to live in the Raleigh area, and recently returned for a visit. My second day there, my friend and her husband asked me where I wanted to go eat for dinner. I stated that I wanted to see what all of they hype and hoopla was about regarding the Angus Barn. \r \r My friend's husband called ahead to make a reservation, and he was told that we should be able to be seated promptly upon our arrival. Well, when we arrived the parking lot was PACKED...and guess what??? So was the rest of the restaurant. We ended up waiting 2 hours to be seated. While we were waiting for our table, my friends asked if I would like something from the bar. When my friend's husband returned, he returned empty handed, and his face was fire engine red. He said that the bartender was extremely nasty, and that it was in our best interest to just skip the drinks. My friend and I looked at one another in total disbelief. After we were shown to our table, the hostess gave us all dirty looks and walked away.\r \r 20 minutes after being seated, our waiter decides to show his face and take our order. After each of us gave our order,he would roll his eyes, and had snotty remarks for each of us. I looked at my friend, and she knew what I was thinking ""Let's get the heak out of here"". It took well over an hour for our food to be delivered to our table. I could not eat mine. It was DISGUSTING. It was cold, the meat was tough, and the potato was HARD....(not cooked at ALL in the middle.......EEEWWWW). When I explained that I wanted it sent back and redone, our waiter looked at me, gave me a snotty grin and snicker type laugh and walked away.\r \r To say the very least I was appauled at how nasty the staff was. \r The total of our bill was $4150.00........WAAAAYYYYY over priced........I will NEVER go back there again!!! Pros: Can't think of any Cons: Rude employees, over-priced, and reservations are useless more

A Local favorite Beef Haven - Great for business, family dining, couples and special events 7/24/2006

Angus Barn is one of the top tourist attractions in the Raleigh area. A large barn of a restaurant consisting of a large dining room, side dining rooms, private rooms and upstairs dining and gift store and lounging area downstairs. The Wine Cellar on the lower level, offers white glove service and gourmet dining for special events (call ahead to reserve). The Wild Turkey lounge upstairs, offer all spirits, dining and live entertainment. The food is very good and service is excellent. A variety of steaks, chops and seafood is served and the special treat is the relish and cheese bar with homemade crackers. Finish up your dining experience with their famous Chocolate Chess Pie! Yum. - The Social Light Pros: The staff and service is excellent. Ambience is that of a rustic barn. Cons: Overpriced more

Wonderful Experience 6/21/2006

I have read all these rants and raves and I clearly DON't understand. I have been to the Angus Barn on two separate occasions for business dinners. On both occasions, the food was exceptional!!! I mean, exceptional! It was truly an experience I will never forget. I only regret that I love 8 hours away from Raleigh-Durham (I love in N. Georgia) and can't get there in a short drive. Closest thing I have seen in our area is J. Alexander's in Chattanooga. I just hope I have another chance to visit the Angus Barn in the future. Pros: Exceptional food! Cons: Very pricey but worth it. more

Something is not right 5/12/2006

The food has been terrible everytime I have been there lately and yet they still get a high score on here. It makes no sense. I bet certain reviews do not get posted. You spend a wad of money for a golden corral quality dinner. It's pathetic. If not for the attention getting big bar on the hill, they would have no business. Pros: turkey saloon Cons: food, food, food more

All hype 3/27/2006

I have eaten at Angus Barn 3 times--for a business dinner and two with out of town family members. After three trips I feel inclined to spare others the time and money. Every meal there means a long wait for your table, even with a confirmed reservation. Once you are seated the food is mediocre at best. In my 3 trips I have yet to have a good steak, they have been way too overcooked everytime. Ordering a steak medium and having it come out brown is unacceptable. The house wine was decent, though nothing special. It seems like people come here just so they can tell others they went to the ""Angus Barn"", and that is what the restuarant is living on now, not the quality of food or service. Cons: Steaks, Slow service, Price more

Business meal of 9 people 3/11/2006

I hosted a group of nine at the Angus Barn for an informal business dinner. The party included customers and commercial partners from the UK/Holland and colleagues from the Triangle area (I'm from the UK). As an All American experience, I'd highly recommend it. The food can best be described as ""good hearty fare"" and the steak was naturally flavoursome. There is a tempting range of desserts; the Key Lime Pie is to be recommended. Value for money was good - below $80 per head including wine and service. We finished with a wine cellar tour, providing an interesting addition to the experience. Pros: hearty fare, great steak, value for money Cons: risk of over eating more

Overrated - Under performing 1/29/2006

The Angus Barn is eclectic. It has a Cracker Barrel atmosphere, Golden Corral quality steaks, and Ruth's Chris' prices. 'nuff said. more

Extremely Overrated 12/30/2005

So the environment is nice---I guess it has to be to make up for the food. I love fine dining and am willing to pay extra for it but Angus Barn is very overrated. I have been three times and every time was the same. The food is terrible! I hate to be so bluntly honest but I would much rather read it hear first than take my chances and be out 100-200 bucks for no reason!! more

Don't believe the hype! 3/10/2005

I've been to the Angus Barn three times now, and I just don't understand why everyone makes such a big deal about it...I always end up being disappointed with my steak. I'm a steak fanatic, and I don't think the Barn lives up to its slogan of being a ""Beefeater's Haven."" Sure, the service is great, but I consistently get more tender, tastier filets at lesser steakhouses for half the price! Still, I think Angus Barn is worth the trip for dessert...the chocolate cheesecake is the best I've ever had! And the atmosphere of the upstairs bar is pretty unusual, making it a nice place for a drink. I just don't think it's worth spending a good $40 per person for a mediocre dinner in what really looks like a barn! But maybe that's just the ""yankee"" in me. Pros: the desserts, turkey bar upstairs Cons: mediocre steaks, overpriced, and it's a barn more
