So, so, so many people have taken up triathlons. For all outward appearances these are smart, normal people with nice lives. What's even stranger is that more would like to take up triathlons, but they don't because they claim to be afraid of the swim portion. I have only ever met one person who was actually afraid of the bike portion, and that was my own Mom. There was of course some sort of traumatic bike experience when she was younger, there was also a traumatic football experience that left her in a full body cast, but luckily for her very few 60 year olds take up football. Anyway this post is about learning or re-learning how to swim.
For all those people who want to do a triathlon but are afraid of the swim portion, Evans pool at Green Lake has some great programs! They are very low-key. On Monday and Wednesday nights from 8:00 to 8:30 they offer a "Strokes Class", where you can improve your swim stroke. Absolute beginners and accomplished swimmers take this class, it works for everyone. Also it is almost always a one to one teacher/swimmer ratio. These classes are taught by three different people; Mike, James or Steve. They are all excellent! If the strokes class seems a little too advanced, you can also get plain old adult swimming lessons. Why go to Evans pool for that you ask? Because Mike and James teach those lessons, and they are great! You get very clear instruction from very calm, non-intimidating ex-swimmers. If you're looking for an aggressive, chip-on-the-shoulders kind of coaching experience, or one where you're in a group of eight or more and you all have to wear matching t-shirts that advertise a need to cure something other than your own lack of fitness, this isn't for you. While joining a group of people with like minded goals can be very effective, it does not work for everyone, even those of us who have survived a disease or two! The swim coaches at Evans pool will video tape your session and critique it for you, but this is as hard-core as they get. These lessons are completely focused on making you a better swimmer while enjoying the experience, without a crowd.
If you're already an accomplished swimmer, but haven't been in the pool since college, come and do the masters swim workout on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 8:30 to 9:30 at night. It's a good group of people.
If you want to do that triathlon and the only thing holding you back is the swim portion, and you just finished reading this post, you no longer have an excuse to not get out there!

Bar none, this is the best bike repair place in Seattle. Aaron and Chad have never steered us wrong and I love seeing them out at bike races! They have a great selection of new and used gear, the price is always competitive and the people there are fun to talk to. If you know all about bikes or nothing about bikes, they will make you feel comfortable! They're honest, skilled at what they do and quick!

I bought a big beautiful average Toyota Avalon in the hopes of never or at least rarely needing a mechanic. Well, someone else was driving my car and hit something big and now the rear right wheel makes a ruckus and it sounds like a jet is taking off in my trunk! And even though the car is average, my personal feeling is that it is the best most above average car I've ever owned. I had no idea where to take my totally average car. I asked my neighbor where he takes his. He told me. Duh, I then got on Judy's book and of course the highest rating for a toyota mechanic is for the same mechanic that my neighbor reccommended! And, it's only 2 miles from my house!!! I've never been so excited about my car going to the mechanic before!
I LOVE JUDY'S BOOK! It helps me make good, well informed decisions about where I'm going to spend my hard earned money. Thanks! Hilary Dahlstrom

I am a fan of the idea of Title 9 Sports. I have shopped at Title 9 Sports. The store is within walking distance from my house, I am their demographic ideal. But, and this is a big but, while shopping there last week, my friend and training partner, a national level athlete, who had just made a purchase, was asked to breast feed her newborn baby elsewhere and out of sight. I was stunned. They sell maternity athletic wear. They sell nursing sport bras, but it would seem to me they haven't really got their act together, and perhaps the store does not practice what it preaches.
It was so disappointing!

I was so disappointed, they are after all just another retailer.

Having owned Saab's for more than 15 years, we have been to every Saab mechanic in Seattle and a few in Vermont. Moe's Automotive on 85th is the only one we go to now!
Moe is really good, really reasonably priced and has an excellent moral compass.
When I thought I was giving him an impossible mission to find me a leather interiored Saab 9000 with fewer than 50,000 miles and a price under 2500.00, he did!
He also provides free towing for Saab repairs done at his shop!
Go see Moe and tell him Andy and Hilary sent you.

Cindy owns the salon and she has two locations. Make sure you get an appointment with her. Good luck.

I am a minimalist at heart, but this is a maximist's review!
When you walk into the Greenwood Family Dentistry office you think minimalist. There are only two chairs, both of which can be seen from the front desk. The front desk is more often than not manned by a niece or nephew putting themselves through college, or an older gentleman neighbor of Dr. Chan's. There is minimal art on the wall, but children's drawings are put up, including the graphic self portrayal of one 7 year old's gag reflex demonstrating the keen ability to rid oneself of one's lunch. This picture is accompanied by a very kind apology for accidentally throwing up on Dr. Chan. It's not center stage, just there in the middle with other, more neutral portrayals of visits to the dentist.
Dr. Chan is an excellent dentist. She does excellent work, she works ridiculously flexible hours (Saturdays!), she has a great sense of humor and is overtly conscious of the expense of dental care. Dr. Chan is one of the few dentists in Seattle who accepts children's Medicaid coupons. She has actually refunded money to me when my insurance paid more than they told me they would!
If you are looking for soothing paint jobs, expensive overhead, headphones and videos, this probably isn't for you. However, if you want really good inexpensive dental care, human interaction, NPR playing from the front desk, great conversations about education and children, to be treated with respect and honesty, this is the place for you! \
Dr. Chan is an excellent kids dentist! Recently my 7 year old son had a disgusting loose tooth that wouldn't come out, and well, I'm too much of a wimp to pull out someone else's tooth. Dr. Chan called us at home after school and told us to just come on by and she'd numb it up and pull it out. I didn't ask, she just remembered me talking about the tooth to her dental hygienist. Off we went. It was obvious that my son was nervous, so Dr. Chan put me in a chair to distract him, and then put him in a headlock (it's the preferred tooth removal method of all 7 year old boys, she is literally the coolest dentist at our local elementary school!) And she popped that tooth right out. Everyone was happy.
I like Dr. Chan's simple model of life and business, nothing to excess, and I really like the quality of care my family gets.
I highly recommend her!
