try the City People's Garden and Design folks in madison. we've twice had Anne come out and consult with us. the first time she did quick sketches based on what we told her we wanted and then we had the installation team give us bids on various components like a granite retaining wall and a flagstone patio. we decided to go with the retaining wall and had them install it and i think it turned out beautiful and made such a big difference in our yard. we did some of the other features ourselves based on her ideas. i recently had Anne come out again to advise me on plants for the beds in front of our house. i felt like both times Anne listened to what we wanted and incorporated our ideas when they were appropriate and advised us against other ideas like plants that wouldn't do well in specific locations. she even offered advice on the cultivation of existing plants and referred us to a bamboo specialist to help us control a bamboo that had escaped it's container.
prices are competitive but not the cheapest. work was done professionally and on schedule. definitely recommend these guys.

this pet food store, which has several locations, gets kittens that have been taken from feral mama cats (who are often too wild to be adopted and instead are spayed and released), fostered with a family and then put up for adoption. they are usually young ( a few months) and in great shape. they free-range in the store so you can really see their personalities.
this store is also a great place to get all your pet supplies (mostly cat and dog but also some bird and rodent stuff). the staff is consistently friendly and helpful and SO knowledgeable. you will get persuasive arguments to buy premium pet food which are spendy!

we had the screen man make some custom window screens, for our 1905 double hung windows, that we could remove each winter and replace with storm windows. one solution he has for french doors are the screens that roll in and out of canisters that are placed on the left and right door jam. the screens slide open and closed on a track and when they are open they are totally out of sight (rolled up) and when they are closed they meet in the middle and attach with a strong magnate. there is no frame or hardware in the middle of the french door way and the actual hardware that contains the screens is fairly sublte and non-offensive. this is a great solution for french doors since most doors (in my experience) open out and if you had tradtional screen doors they would need to open into the house which is awkward. we used these sliding doors with our french doors and loved them. they can be made for any doors, french or otherwise.
general info: great customer service, they came and repaired a screen for us (that we dropped out the window) for free. nice owner who does all the mobile measuring, building and installing. prices seemed reasonable. they serve king and pierce counties.

chris helped us choose colors for our entire house. she was great fun to work with and brought enormous color chips (2 ft by 2 ft) from two or three lines of paint including C2 and Devine. we spent just under 2 hours taping chips up on different walls, comparing the colors with the trim, tiles or granite and then comparing the final colors to make sure the whole house had some semblance of flow. chris has so much experience in terms of choosing colors and then seeing the final results that she was able to lend her first hand experience in advising us towards or away from certain colors. for example she said 'this color chip looks like a creamy off white but when its on the wall it tends to look much more yellow and bananay and i don't think it will look good with your carpet color'. she helped expedite decision making and also made great suggestions just in terms of interior decorating. another example, she suggested we continue the very dark chocolate brown color we choose for our bedroom into the adjoining bathroom to give a feeling of "master suite". i was skeptical about painting a bright and sunny bathroom a dark brown color but it actually works really well and was a great suggestion.
chris lives on bainbridge island and unless she already has a trip planned to seattle will charge about $40 for her travel time and ferry expenses. her hourly is $75. two phone numbers: 206-855-9569 and her cell 206-713-8758
she has great energy, is quick and efficient and very knowledgeable and i highly recommend her.

if children are the ultimate accessory (some believe) then this is the place to really step it up a notch. these clothes vary from charming and handmade to irreverent and punk. lots of silk screened t-shirts and onsies, fabulous fabrics for little skirts and shirts and quirky color combinations that are such a relief from the hum drum infant and toddler lines most stores carry. the higher prices reflect the individuality of the clothes. there is a rack of vintage clothes and some gift type items like artwork, toys and little stocking stuffers.

i just discovered this little gem while out and about in the roosevelt district. small and tucked behind another store (Pop Tots) this hip little store has a nice range of trendy clothes for those sporting the maternal bump. prices looked reasonable from my quick pass and it looks to offer some excellent options for the more fashion conscious. since i'm expecting to finish up my pregnancy in the next week or two i didn't try anything on but i did give it a quick once over for the JB crowd. the store also has some fun artwork and gifts for new parents. one item i hadn't seen before is a well designed fleece jobie that wraps around a baby in a front carrier (baby bjorn). pocket for the feet, optional hood if the little tyke is facing mom or dad and long fleece fingers that wrap around and between the baby and parent to be tied at the babe's back. small pocket for a binky or keys and made from the softest fleece material out there. huge improvement over the ever-trailing and unraveling blanket cover-up.
