Best

Gorgeous interior: like the villa of a lottery-rich gypsy. Lush, deep and full of eye candy decor. Very interesting mix of dishes from all walks of the Mediterranean. From Morocca...

Worst

We had no service. The waiter ignored us. Food bland and flavorless. Too bad I really wanted to like it.

Feels like a real Irish pub 4/29/2006

As much as I love the other Irish bars in the city, there's something special about the Irish Bank. Maybe because it's in an alley... and my favorite Irish Bar in all of Germany was hidden in an alley near the tourist areas. I'm not exactly sure, but it just had the right craic - that feeling that you only get in an Irish Bar... warm, cozy, and like you can spend the rest of your life there in the corner, perched on a stool and drinking whiskey and stout. The bar itself is simple and comfortable, with two televisions and a wall full of whiskeys (+1 point for having Redbreast 12 and +1 point for having Jameson 18). Guinness, Harp, Bass and Magners Cider are available on tap (+1 point for Magners) but unfortunately, there was no Murphy's Stout (-1 point for ignoring the amazing stout from San Francisco's sister city of Cork). It's a great place when you're done dealing with the Union Square crowd, but not quite ready to head home. more

The Irish Bank--for mid-week happy hour 3/2/2006

This old-fashioned Irish pub tucked into an alley in San Francisco’s financial district is transformed each weekday night by the crowd of young professionals gathering to unwind after work. Guinness and beer is purchased inside, but the scene is outdoors. On a mild fall night, if the company is good, you’ll forget you’re actually in a bit of a downtrodden alley and just enjoy your drinks. more

Owner Message
  • Affectionately known as one of San Francisco's hidden gems, Gitane is eclectic, sexy and sophisticated. The menu is inspired by the travels of a gypsy, Northern Spain, Southern France and Italy.

Editorial
  • Sophisticated, exotic, yet welcoming and comfortable, Gitane is that rare thing--an approachable knockout. It's difficult to do justice to the design here, but suffice to say the interior deserves...
