From the moment I walk in that store, everything else falls away, because Sarah is dedicated to her clients. The moment you sit in her chair, she gives you her best. She's been at...

I can say first off that I have been a client of this salon for awhile until today. The stylist that I have been seeing is wonderful, but I feel sorry for anyone working there hav...

Amanda Arp 7/24/2008

I went in for a haircut and highlights. Amanda Arp was my stylist and did a fantastic job. I didn't have a picture of what I wanted but she listened to my description and came up with a plan. When it wasn't quite yet perfect, she listened to me again and got it perfect. She has such a great personality and is easy going. She ended up doing my eyebrows too. I highly recommend her to anyone. Despite the fact that I like to do everything I can in my neighborhood, her skills were well worth the trip across town! more

Not a good experience - Would not go here again 6/26/2008

This was probably the worst salon experience I have ever had. My stylist was late and to top it off worked on several people at once because someone was out sick. I paid way too much for a cut and highlights and to top it off it didn't come out that great. When I explained that my results were unsatisfactory, I was asked to come back so they could fix it but why would I go back if it was so bad the first time. Additionally, these folks can be very pushy when it comes to buying the product line. They actually try to make you feel like a low life if you tell them you can't afford to purchase everything they used on your hair. The one thing I DON'T want when I go to an upscale salon is someone looking down their nose at me. Would not recommend to friends. Pros: It was clean Cons: Parking - Attitude - Poor results more

Gracious. Professional 6/13/2008

I have never written an online review, but my experience at Ziva warrants one. It was my first appointment with Paulino for a cut and color. I wanted to like the outcome because he is such a terrific person, but it was dreadful. Neither the cut or color worked on me. I called Ziva the next day. They were very accommodating and made space for me the following day. Paulino was so gracious. He truly wanted to make it right. With a little tweaking and a few new highlights, it is PERFECT. I would highly recommend Paulino - he is a true professional in every way. more

My 2 cents 6/7/2008

I've never actually had my hair styled at Ziva's, but I've been there to pick up products before. Word of advice re. ""product pushers"" - just smile and say ""Oh, I already have a bottle of that."" Works every time. more

Don't believe the hype 6/1/2008

I'm a curly head who's always had a problem with my thick, coarse, long, curly hair. After reading pages of rave reviews about a certain stylist (many referencing curly hair) I called to make an appt. I explained my hair and was assured they could help me. I was quoted a price for full color and cut about $175. All excited I arrived promptly to find my stylist ""still at lunch"". I was offered water and told it shouldn't be long. 1/2 hour later, he strolls in, makes small talk with the staff , then wanders over to me to discuss my hair. No apology for the wait, but ok, he's the genius. We talked for a few minutes and I explained I needed-a cut and style that would allow my curls to fall into place and an even color as I had been covering my own gray for about a year. He was confidant and promptly started mixing my color. Almost 2 hours later, he had colored and razor cut (yes, razor cut) my curly hair. The style he gave me was to wrap individual pieces of hair around a finger and let dry. He insisted this would work best for my hair although I told him I wanted a wash & go style. He then told me he had put some Gold in my black hair (although I didn't see any) and of course my bill was written for 2 colors. Now my bill is almost $250 and I'm walking out with wet hair and shirley temple curls-I'm over 40, so not a good look. I questioned the bill and my stylist came back out to have me look in the light to see the gold, umm no, couldn't see it. He said, ""it will look great in the sun"" and walked away. Now maybe it's because he squeezed in 2 walk-ins while I was sitting with color on my head, or maybe my hair was too complicated, or maybe these great reviews are written by the stylists themselves! And they do pressure you to buy the B&B line. Over-priced, Over-hyped, Pretentious and Snotty Staff. Wants to be NY but falls way short. Won't be back.. Pros: Can't think of a thing. Cons: Everything else more

educational always fun chatter 5/7/2008

When I was getting my hair colored the other day, I just happened to be there when someone was teaching a class on hair straightening., and while I love my curls and would never give them up . It was so interesting to watch the class take place, the instructor was very knowledgeable and really took the time to make sure the girls learning were understanding, he also communicated in depth with there clients telling them about home care, and the whole time it looked like they were all having fun. I wish I could have stayed to see the outcome. Pros: great staff, fun experence, really nice products Cons: parking, price, sometimes a little pushy with the products more

Ultimate Answer For Curly Hair!!! 4/19/2008

Run do not walk! Pros: Best curly cut ANYWHERE - Paulino is the man. Cons: Pricey!!! more

Good, but not outstanding 4/15/2008

I have been going to Ziva for several years now. Bottom line, I have never had a bad experience here. The pros are : you'll always leave looking good, their products are amazing, and the stylists all know what they're doing. The cons are: the service is almost always rushed and often times a different person ends up washing your hair or (a couple of times this has happened) even styling it, and the cost for coloring is $10 for every additional color. These cons deter me, and many times I have tried other salons in between my visits to Ziva. I have found that Ziva guarantees a decent color and cut, but the color technique isn't exceptional, nor is the attention to detail the stylists provide (I have had three different ones here and my mom has had one). If you are willing to pay around $170 for a cut and partial highlights, plus tip, go ahead. But, with this price I expect an EXCEPTIONAl service, which I have never really got. more

Paulino saved my hair!! 4/9/2008

I made the mistake of dropping into a salon that neither I nor anybody else I know had been. The stylist ruined my hair. My hair was yellow and fried! I had the highlight gone bad, very bad. I hadn't colored my hair in years and it was healthy and below my shoulders. I was devastated. A girlfriend of mine referred me to her hairstylist, Paulino. Paulino saved my hair. He gave me a new style that was fun, easy to fix, and flattered my features. When I left Ziva I felt sassy...better than my old self. The staff at Ziva is always friendly and welcoming. I have always been happy with the services I receive from the spa to rescuing hair gone bad! I highly recommend Ziva and Paulino. more

Paulino keeps me looking good 4/9/2008

I have been seeing Paulino for almost four years now. He is very professional, very personal, and very concerned that I always look my best. He is constantly learning about hair and styling, and is always sharing what he has learned. Ultimately, I benefit because my hair looks fabulous. The other staff at the salon are really nice, they always offer me water and tea, and seem very interested in learning from Paulino and the other stylist that have been there awhile. They do a lot of teaching, so there is always lots of help. I won't trust my hair to anyone else, if I ever moved I'd have to visit Portland every 6-8 weeks! Pros: I can usually get an appointment within one to two weeks, they are very flexible with my schedule Cons: Parking is tough. On the pricey side, but hey! Totally worth it! more

Best color, best haircut, best stylist, best customer service - best salon!!! 3/31/2008

I have been going to Ziva Salon and getting my hair done by Paulino for 10 years now, even flying in from out of state specifically to have him work on my crazy, unmanageable hair. Between Paulino and the B&B products I'm finally able to tame the crazy mass of curls on my head! Joe, the owner, knows my family by name and is always there to greet us with a smile. The customer service team is always ready to answer questions and help you find products that suit your needs. The store is always clean, well stocked, and offers fantastic variety. Then there's the design team! You cannot go wrong with ANY of the amazingly talented designers, though I admit that Paulino will always be my chosen one. He has done amazing things for my hair. Paulino is hands down the BEST stylist, best colorist (never lets me choose the wrong color, though I get adventurous now and then), and always gives me the best haircut. He also never admonishes me, even though I torture my hair endlessly. Pros: Atmosphere, fantastic design team, top quality services. Cons: Parking can be hard to find in NW, but should not deter you! more

Paulino is awesome 3/28/2008

I live in Manhattan and had my hair cut by Paulino when he was here for a Bumble & Bumble seminar. He was super sweet and did an amazing job. I'm sad that he doesn't live in new york, but portland is lucky to have him :-) more

Love it!! 3/27/2008

Sometime around late last month I thought I'd try something new with my hair and go to a beauty school...well bad idea!! My hair turned out horrible, and nothing like I had asked for! Luckily a friend told me about Ziva so I decided to stop messing around with my poor hair and get it done the right way! I am so pleased with how it turned out and I was pleasantly surprised it didn't cost a fortune to fix it! I would highly recommended Ziva, the people there are so kind, and they do an awesome job! :) Pros: Gorgeous location, friendly people, amazing job! Cons: Parking, traffic. more

Best Hairstylist in Portland 3/24/2008

Paulino Borgia is a premiere hairstylist and one of the very best around. I have been a client of his for the past 6 years and have been exceedingly pleased with his expertise. His cutting edge techniques keep his cuts so fresh and he has a great eye for matching his cut to the shape of your face. He is a great listener and really takes your desires to heart when he is shaping your hair. He is a highly respected stylist and is one of Bumble and Bumbles top picks when they are choosing a professional to style their models. And to top it all off, he is such a wonderful person, very friendly and approachable. If you're looking for a true hair expert, look no further, you've found him! more

Paulino is awesome! 3/18/2008

I too am a hair model in NYC, and was Paulino's final client during his last trip here for a workshop a few weeks ago. My hair was growing out of a very short cut, was approaching a mullet, and let's just say he had some very interesting layers to work with! Even with these challenges, his technique rocked, and he was able to change my whole look into something more current and very sassy. Plus, he put me at ease and made me feel very comfortable, didn't rush me at all, and (I can't stress this enough) REALLY listened to what I had to say. Overall it was an amazing experience - and being a hair model I have had a LOT of different stylists. He made it to the top of that list. It's a shame I can't get my hair cut in Portland, because I'd definitely visit Paulino again. more

I love my haircut (and Paulino)! 3/16/2008

I haven't actually been to Ziva. I live in New York and I am a hair model for Bumble and Bumble (This means hairdressers from all over the country come in, learn new techniques from B&B and practice them on the models). I've been doing this for over 5 years so I've been through lots of hairdressers. Paulino was my hairdresser a few weeks ago at one of these events. What first amazed me about him is he really looked at my hair, studied it, and kept practicing different looks with my facial structure until he found something he liked. He talked to me about my job and life trying to figure out not only what would look good, but what would work with my busy lifestyle. I have ridiculously thick hair that for my whole life has plagued me with being way too poofy--especially with the short haircuts that I always want. Paulino worked with all of this unwieldy hair and gave me an unbelievable cut. All I do now when I get up in the morning is put on clothes. My hair seriously looks so cute even when I first wake up. It's not poofy and unlike other cuts, I can actually replicate what he did in the salon at home, without working at it. I don't understand how he did it. and I'm kind of freaking out that Paulino is all the way in Oregon and I won't be able to get a cut like this in the city. I may have to make a trip out to Oregon--always wanted to see it anyway. Seriously though, I'd trust Paulino with any sort of hair. My cut is amazing, fun and totally chic and I get compliments on it daily. more

Paulino is a talent with hair!!!! 1/30/2008

I really liked this salon and will recommend to friends and family. Paulino is an absolute talent with hair, I was not sure at first and everybody made me feel very comfortable and welcome and then Paulino did my hair and now I am convinced, The products made my hair feel wonderful and soft and Paulino made it match the way it felt. I will return to this business and will highly recommend. Thanks Again Paulino !! Pros: Staff, warm and inviting atmosphere Cons: parking more

Paulino is a Genius! 12/26/2007

I have curly hair and finding the right stylist is imperative. Curly hair in the wrong hands can be disastrous. I highly recommend Paulino at Ziva salon to anyone who wants an amazing haircut. The man is a genius. I merely show up and let him do whatever he wishes with my curly hair -- and it always looks fantastic. He is incredibly skilled; as an added bonus, he is also friendly, down-to-earth and thoroughly professional. I lived in Portland for five years in search of the right stylist before I found Paulino at Ziva. If you too have been searching, look no more -- Paulino is your man. more

With Miranda experience change!!!! 9/19/2007

What a quirky girl!!! But that's just it. Miranda can see you on a different level. She's fun and business oriented. The woman knows how to listen!!! Give her a little of you and she'll do the rest! I went into her to have change and I got it in the best way! She takes a while to warm up but when she does...just watch her work. I am truly impressed. She likes to talk and give her imput and can be a bit hard to understand but you can tell that she is genuine and loving. Give her a chance...I did and I walked out of Ziva very happy. Pros: Great invironment and wonderful staff!!!! more

Paulino- hair apparent. 8/26/2007

I am a girl with major haircut-phobia. Worse than a dentist's visit, I have always had a fear of haircuts. I have never had a good cut, and it has always looked best after 6 months of ""grow-out"". My hair was very long, very ratty, very thick, very curly, and very very long over-due for a cut. I knew I wanted, needed, something drastic. A hair intervention. Within a half hour of sitting in the chair of hair God Paulino Borja I had gone from a major hair don't to a fabulous new short hair do. I can't believe how fast and how fabulous this experience was. I will NEVER go anywhere else. I have had nothing but compliments from everyone I know, and people on the street have even mentioned how cute the cut is. more
