Worst

Don't come here if your looking for good service because your not going to find it. But you will find great beer and good food. I took out of town guest and I wish I hadn't.

Chicken Schnitzel. Nothing else compares. 1/10/2010

My family has been coming to this place for yeeeeeeaaaaaars. We're German and, well, this place has the best schnitzel in the city hands down. I've never had HORRIBLE service here, but the wait staff seemed a little absent. I've had worse service elsewhere. Pros: did you see the headline? Cons: service could be a bit better. more

Food could use some improvement 7/29/2009

Its expected that the beer would be good - no complaint there. Pros: Excellent berry cobbler Cons: Mediocre food more

I love Widmer! 2/22/2009

Widmer hef is my favorite beer, and I make a point of going to the brewery every time I am in Portland. The food is good and the beer is great - order a sampler! The service is about average I suppose. It was pretty busy this trip and the service was really slow, I don't remember it being amazing last time I was there and they weren't very busy at the time. Gift shop is closed on weekends, and they don't have much of a selection of merch in the restaurant which is a bit of a bummer. The beer cheese soup puts a smile on my face. Pros: Great food and beer Cons: Service more

Needs improvement 7/5/2007

Perhaps it was a busy night, but our service was terrlble. The waiter actually was upset when two of us place a drink order while he delivered a friend's beverage at the other end of the table. He said ""You should have said something when I was here before"" under his breath. Guess what? He never asked. My salad was great, but my friend was served two burned piece of pork. The waiter didn't even flinch, but presented the plate like that is how it was supposed to be done. When it was returned to the kitchen, he made no offer of how to remedy the situation other than to take it off the bill. Manager please! I hear the beer was good, but if I am going to deal with lousy service, at least get me a strong cocktail. Pros: Salad, Fondue Cons: Service, Pork, Food Value more

Horrible Service 2/8/2007

We've been to this restaurant at least 5 times, and the service is consisently mediocre. While the food and beer are good, the service sunk to an all time low and ruined our experience. Our waiter was rude and we were surprised by how surly he was with his condescending remarks made several times over dinner. Overall it was a disappointing experience. Pros: good beer, non-smoking Cons: poor service / wait staff more

Best Beer! 11/4/2006

If you don't love the Hef, something is wrong with you. The beer here is wonderful, and there is nothing better than getting it straight from the tap at the brewery. So many choices. Get the sampler if you are not sure what to get. The food is iffy and lacking flavor. Soups are good and creative. Pretzels are always fun. Pros: The beer Cons: Food could be a bit better, more creative, but hey more

It's a little hidden treasure 11/3/2006

Oh man, such good food, such good beer, such a great value. Try the fondue pretzle and anything with that spatzle stuff. The beer, well, everyone knows that's good! Pros: The food, beer and prices Cons: the weird location more

Great Octoberfest 10/22/2006

Went for the first time for their Octoberfest and really enjoyed the music, beer and food. Hard to judge their food based on a densely populared beer fest but from what we tried (preztels and sausages) it was pretty good. Pros: beer more

I like it! 10/22/2006

I ate here for the first time the other night and really enjoyed it- everyone's food was excellent (I would recommend the sausage fondue appetizer- super yum!), and my pasta was so big there was plenty to take home. I agree with other people's comments regarding the waitstaff; some of them were a bit on the surly side. But hey, just order another beer, on your own at the bar if needed, and it'll be fine. Still worth it. more

Great Beer & Food 9/8/2006

We've been here a few times and Widmer Gasthaus consistently delivers. They have a varied menu from pretzels (with or without a cheese sauce dip) to burgers, sausage samplers and schnitzel (pork or chicken). They also make wonderful mashed potatoes in-house as well. Pros: great food; wonderful beer; reasonable prices; some happy hours Cons: limited seating inside and out; although there is a parking lot, it is small more

Only place for a decent Widmer. 4/16/2006

Widmer does not produce a regular release beer worth purchasing, in my opinion. The seasonals are good, but thats about it. But, that is what is so great about the Gasthaus, there are many beers available and they are much better than anything they put in the bottle. The food is very good, whether you have the sausage, saurbraten, schnitzel, etc. there is no wrong choice. The service is also very good. I love going there and will continue to do so. Just please don't waste your time/money on Hefeweizen and Drop Top. Pros: beer, food, service Cons: can get busy more

Pleasant suprise 11/4/2005

After a really long hard day we tried this restaurant for the first time and it was everything I'd been looking for since moving to Oregon in the way of authentic German food. The food was fantastic, the waitress was extremely attentive, and it was comfortable enough to relax and feel like I got a lot for the total bill. The parking was easier than expected and I would definitely recommend this to those looking for this type of food. Pros: inexpensive, good parking, good seating more

FANTASTIC, FUN PLACE 6/8/2005

We have found a true jewel of gastronomic pleasures! In addition to sampling some of the great beers, we were blown away by the excellent food...to say nothing of the great service. The atmosphere is brew-pub--very enjoyable and made more so by the attentive service. Great value for your $$$. The excellence of the BEER CHEESE SOUP should be enjoyed by all. A great place to enjoy a meal with friends!!!! Pros: Smiling Service, Easy Parking, Unique Menu more

Poor Service 3/2/2005

We've given this restraunt three tries, and every time come away disappointed. The service is awful, the wait staff is unfriendly, and the food is just so-so. Our waitress didn't refill drinks, didn't check on us after giving us the food, and was down right rude. Not a good experience at all. There are definetly better restraunts out there for the same price and quality of food. Pros: Beer Cons: Wait Staff, Service more

German or American style, beer & food! 9/25/2004

The food, be it pub grub or German food is amazing. This is the only truly great Sauerbraten in Oregon and it is amazing! All the sausages have deep flavor (try the appetizer to taste them all) and the Schnitzels are tasty and lean (though occaisionally overbreaded). The beers are special, especially the Drop Top Amber. Hey, take the brewery tour if you can. A fun place to go, just wish there was a place to smoke there. The service is friendly without being cloying. Pros: German food, beer, service Cons: , no smoking more

Great Food and Fantastic Beer 6/23/2004

This is a fantastic place with a great menu. My family and I ate there the other night and we had a great meal for a fair price. The beer was awesome! The staff had lots of choices to reccomend, but I reverted back to Drop Top and my wife went back to Hefeweizen. She said, ""I don't remember it ever tasting better."" Drop Top is my favorite new beer so I will be back. Pros: Value, Good parking, Great Beer more

Good food and good drinks 4/28/2003

If you can find the place, it's a really nice place with really good German food and the obviously great beer. Pros: German Food, Beer Cons: Location more

Very relaxing 3/1/2003

This is one of the best pubs/bars I've been to in the entire NW. I'm from the East Coast and the only piece of scenery that was missing was the snow. more

did some one say beer 9/15/2002

As my first taste of Portland out side of the university Cafeteria I was not disapointed in the least. The prices where something that even a poor college student could handle and need i say anything about the beer? more
