Umi Sake = THIEVES (overcharge your unprocessed credit card) 9/22/2011

OVERCHARGED my $36 for $144 (our group' s total amount). I was never refunded back the money (because i threw my receipt). The manager and staff never cared to call back, i had to drive all the way to Seattle to see them. They gave the COLD shoulder. These are stingy THIEVES. Used to love this place but after this incident NEVER going back. Be CAREFUL everyone. Umi is sneaky for such a 'classy place' more

Best Sushi in Seattle 1/13/2011

With all the amazing sushi restaurants at our access in Seattle, I have to say Umi is by far the greatest sushi eating experience. I love the energy and style of the restaurant, their inventive rolls and quality of their fish. It is always the first place we choose for date night and never have never been let down! more

Fun upbeat atmosphere, overpriced sushi 1/7/2011

Many of the sushi restaurants I've been to go more for the zen experience, but this restaurant felt more like a lively nightclub. We sat at the bar, and our service was great because we could order right from the chef. The food was delicious and arrived fast even though the restaurant was packed and very busy. Overall a great time, but I'd say we paid more for the experience and the fun atmosphere than for the food. $2.50 - $4.00 for one piece of nigiri is a bit much, and especially in Seattle, you can find sushi that is just as good for a much better price. This place is probably a lot better for happy hour than for a full dinner. more

don't expect great service, food is good, but overpriced 9/4/2010

Although most of the food I tried has been decent, I have to say my take on Umi has significantly decreased since I first went a few years ago. Portions have gotten smaller and smaller, especially the sashimi. And my most recent experience makes me want to never return... MY CARD WAS CHARGED TWICE. Luckily the charge was not one that sent me over my limit, but the management did not compensate well...I talked to a hostess and a manager. Neither of which apologized even once for the mistake. It took 5 days just to receive a call back, and the receptionist (hostess) wanted me to leave all my credit card info with her so she could pass it on to the manager. Ummm...no thanks! I wanted to talk to the manager directly so my credit card info was not floating around an obviously irresponsible staff. When I finally got to talk to a manager, it was not the one that handled charges. She was still able to give me a refund, but first OFFERED ME A GIFT CERTIFICATE INSTEAD OF A REFUND....what the...??? I work in a restaurant and not only would we never say that, but we would apologize for the mistake and probably offer some sort of free dish to get that person back!! the place has always had pretty poor customer service, but now...you've pushed me completely out! sorry Umi, but I have to agree with other reviews...you are over-rated more

i love umi! best sushi in seattle! 5/26/2010

without a doubt, this is my favorite place in seattle. it's obvious many people feel this way, as it's always super busy. i love the ambiance, the "outdoor, but indoor" patio. umi has large selection of tasty rolls (my favorite is the 007), with new rolls being offered almost every time i visit. thanks umi for offering such great sushi and service! Pros: large selection of tasty rolls Cons: parking - it's on 1st more

Horrible Service - not coming back! 5/19/2010

I celebrated my 30th birthday with my family and close friends – about 10 of us. When my sister made the reservation, they told her about the 2 hr time limit, but she forgot to tell me. After 1.5 hours, our tab was over $350. My brother and wife arrived late and ordered 5 more rolls that would have brought the tab well over $400. The same waitress that took the order came by 10 minutes later and said we had to leave soon. We asked her what she thought we should do with the 5 rolls that were just ordered. She couldn’t come up with a valid resolution, so we asked for her manager. He was even worse. His solution was to kick us all out, set my brother at a table, and eat all 5 rolls by himself. WTF?! He wouldn’t let us stay for another 20 minutes to wrap up. We canceled the order and left. We’re never coming back! I wouldn't give it a star but had to rate. Pros: Food was good, but not worth the service. Go to Wasahi Bistr Cons: Poor, rude service more

Yummy seared tuna but snooty employees.. 5/11/2010

Don't try the yakisoba - it's really pretty when it comes out but it basically made my husband sick for a couple of days and it wasn't good at all. I actually liked the seared tuna and the lychee lemonade was yummy! I only go there w/my friends when they're just dying for the 2 I thought were good but service really sucks and they are just snooty!! It is a really nice place but like I said I only go when I'm really craving the seared tuna and the lychee lemonade. more

misrepresented policy and rude service 3/23/2010

I made a reservation for 10 people and made it clear we were doing drinks and appetizers before going on to another venue. I was told there was a $20 per person min for parties of 10 or more and gratuity would be included into the tab...no problem. After enduring an hour of slow service from a very rude server she told us right before the bill came out that we were $87 short. Apparently that $20 per person min doesn’t include alcohol (would have been nice to know that in the beginning). The server said people misunderstand this often because "they aren’t listening". Nice response. After asking for the manager I was shocked to find out he was equally as rude as the server. Net, net....never going back. Pros: Food Cons: service, management more

terrible service 3/20/2010

took over 20 minutes to get our first round of drinks at 4:30pm (not busy at that time). initially said the taps for the happy hour beers were broken but that they'd be fixed in 10 minutes. 20 minutes later we were told they wouldn't be fixed at all. we ordered lots of sushi, which tasted okay but not memorable. throughout the time spent there, it took great effort to get the server's attention in order to ask for more drinks/food. after waiting 45 minutes just to get our bill, we asked the hostess if we could speak with the manager. we weren't looking to get free food but wanted to make sure he was aware how horrible the service had been. plus, there was a long line of people waiting to sit down (you'd think they would want to let us pay so we could leave and more people could sit). i think what he mumbled to us was his attempt at an apology but he really seemed to care less. when we finally got our bill, we charged for the first round of beers we ordered but never received because of the broken taps. This of course added an extra 10 minutes to get that corrected. we finally got of there at 8pm and will never go back. wasabi bistro is significantly better from a service and food perspective. Cons: pathetic service including the 'manager' more

We offer over 45 premium sakes that are highlighted on our menu with many different Pan-Asian, Japanese, Sushi & Raw Bar dishes. Our extensive wine list and top shelf bar will compliment any menu item. We encourage you to place your large group reservation online & look forward to seeing you soon!

Editorial
  • The Scene
Recessed lighting, minimalist decor and a cool slate floor set the scene at this chic, urban sake house. The low-ceilinged bar space attracts Belltown trendseekers, while a quieter night can be had on the enclosed atrium in the back, where skylights and potted trees evoke the feeling of outdoor dining without interference from the variable Seattle weather or noisy downtown revelers.

    The Food
With a dizzying selection of pan fried, baked, grilled, steamed and raw items, a meal could be built from the appetizer menu alone. Try the "Tower of King Crab," comprised of generous slices of king crab, avocados, snow crab, and tomato salsa with cilantro and yuzu aioli. While an array of hot Pan Asian dishes are offered, the seductive sushi selection is the real star. Sample the house roll with silken scallop, cucumber, tobiko, and avocado, all wrapped in a ruby-hued cocoon of tuna, or go straight for the daily fresh sheet and follow your server's suggestions.
