Steppenwolf's real domain as a powerhouse basically ended around the mid-1990s. They have had occasional hits since then, but one expects more from a company with a reputation li...

Genuine Theater Dedication 6/23/2006

One of the best places to see a show in Chicago. House ensemble aside, it's a wonderful venue. The area outside the theater is usually decorated with supplements about the featured playwright or the work. Incredibly clean, with an almost museum-like feel. With all the helpful information, it's a great place for those unfamiliar with Chicago theater. Because of the cast, it will delight the regulars as well. Go to Steppenwolf to see dedicated professionals really making it happen. more

You won't find Susan Lucci here anytime soon 5/12/2006

Is it me, or are soap opera actors some of the worst?! Sure, there are your Davd Canary's and your Peter Bergman's, but for every one of them, there are 1,000 really bad actors. That is what makes me appreciate Steppenwolf even more. They have GREAT actors here, and great writing. If there is one thing I truly appreciate, it's great acting and writing. This place is famous throughout the country for bringing in some of the best talent in theater. I am so impressed with what they do here and that they represent the best of the best. I also appreciate that they have their own parking facility because parking is impossible in this area on most days. more

Legendary Chicago Theatre company 12/29/2005

Begun in a church basement in Highland Park, this legendary Chicago Theatre company is a classic American success story. John Malcovich, Laurie Metcalf, John Mahoney, Joan Allen, Gary Sinese, many of the names are now a permanent part of American theatre history. So come and be enchanted by the real thing, Chicago style theatre that is visceral and real, that grabs you by the short hairs and doesn't let go until you cry "Amen!" http://www.steppenwolf.org/ more

Outstanding Choice for Theater in Chicago 12/24/2005

Become a subscriber and you will not be dissapointed. The theater is small, so any seat is a good one. Even in the balcony. They have 5 plays a season and they are excellent quality with top performances. If you want to check it out for a discount, go the day of performance before the show and try for the 1/2 price tickets. Or usher and you can see a show for free. more

Great shows 8/21/2005

Steppenwolf has a lot of different shows, so there is something for everyone throughout the year. It is cheaper to buy an annual subscription. Cafe Ba Ba Reeba is near by and would make an excellent post theater dinner! Located in a great neighborhood-but difficult parking, you may have to use the parking garage they recommend which is $9 just for the show, $11 if you want to stay parked there through dinner. more

Best Theatre Chicago Has to Offer 8/18/2005

Founded by the likes of Gary Senise and John Malkovich, this theatre features new productions on a regular basis. This is theatre at its finest in Chicago. There are two theatres at this Lincoln Park location, and some interesting productions happen at the smaller venue. The location can be a hassle...Lincoln Park on the weekend can be crazy, but it's well worth any hassle. more

Classic and quirky theatre 8/5/2005

The story is now told so often it's nearly local folklore--Gary Sinise, John Malkovich and friends started this world-class theatre in a church basement over 30 yrs. ago. It now hosts some of the finest productions in the country, indeed the world as some shows have toured overseas. The famous faces come back often--John Mahoney, Gary Sinise, Laurie Metcalfe, Martha Plimpton, John Malkovich and many others. Located on a lovely strip of Halsted St., where you can dine and shop before the show. As with any theatre, some of the shows beg the question 'What are we looking at?' Trust me it's a good sign: a well established theatre not afraid to keep experimenting. more

FANTASTIC PLAYS AND THEATRE EVERYTIME 6/30/2005

I have attended several different plays at this theater and I loved every single one of them. They always know how to put on an enthralling and entertaining show. The sets, actors and lighting put you under a spell that engrosses you. The ticket prices vary depending on each play, but generally you will pay high prices to see a play at this theater. more
