Sixth Street Tips 5/14/2008

Unless you are in a UT fraternity or sorority, a lot of the bars with a Sixth Street address are pretty lame (one exception off the top of my head is The Jackalope). Check out the bars along Red River for a more interesting experience. However, on Friday and Saturday nights, the police block Sixth St. to cars, and people can just hang out in the middle of the street. This is a sight to see, so I recommend walking down Sixth St. during these times, for pure entertainment value. \r \r Also, whatever you do, DO NOT eat Roppolo's pizza. This is quite possibly the worst pizza in the United States. This should be fairly obvious upon sight of it, but I too have reluctantly purchased a plastic-y looking slice of cheese at 1:00 am, just because there are almost no places to get food late at night downtown. \r \r If you find yourself really needing some food, you are MUCH better off walking to the Onion pizza place at 116 W. 5th (not far the center of Sixth St. mayhem). Or just ask some locals where you can find the guy selling the authentic Chicago style hot dogs out of his trailer. Trust me on this. more

Question 4/17/2008

Do you know if you have to be 21 to go to the clubs on 6th street or do they let people in that are 18? more

Great!...on the right night 5/14/2004

I've been to 6th street MANY MANY times...and I can tell you that on the right night, its a great place to go, but if you go on a night when not many people are out or when UT is on a break, it just doesn't seem as fun, now if you are slightly older, you might enjoy 4th street a little more, its just a litttle more laid back and the bars are still nice with some good music! Pros: Fun People, Good Bartenders, Music Cons: , some slow bartenders, bums more

ToNs Of FuN! 12/30/2002

I love 6th Strret. It is so great. I mean, what else could you wish for....it has a little bit everything you would ever want, unless you're too old. hahaha. Pros: hot guys, cheap drinks, clubs! Cons: sometimes crowded, homeless people more

Quantity over Quality 11/27/2002

Spend entire evning in one locale, bar hopping at its best. Check out as many bands as you desire, hopefully you will find one you like. Plenty of Stevie Ray atmosphere to soak in, not always alot of talent. Great, inexpensive fun! Pros: Always a party., Inexpensive, Atmoshere, + vibe more

WAYYYYYY OVERRATED 11/14/2002

When I go to downtown Austin, there has to be a special occasion for me to go to 6th Street. I would rather hang out at any of the cool places like Fado or Gingerman, which are close to 6th street, but far enough way for me to like it. Pros: Prices Cons: Frat Boys more

6th Street 11/13/2002

When I visited Austin, I was really excited about Sixth Street. I had seen so much on this site about it, but when I got there I was rather disappointed. It's not all that they say it is. My friend and I ended up going to the parks and just hanging out in town. more

Something for Everyone 11/2/2002

For those who aren't big on the traditional nightlife (i.e. barhopping), horse drawn carriage and passenger tricycle rides through the area offer a view of the neat shops and always fun and diverse crowd of interesting Austinites, including various artists, musicians, and vendors. more

Ugh - no thanks 10/5/2002

The only visitors who truly enjoy 6th street anymore are drunk frat boys and those who patronize copy bands and tacky souvenir shops. Not that there's anything wrong with any of those groups of people, my point is that for the most part, 6th street is a long way from representing the real culture of Austin anymore, as far as something visitors really come here to see. And the area is big hassle parking-wise and increasingly dangerous, especially for women. The real music scene Austin is famous for is now happening along red river and in south austin mostly now, and there are a lot more interesting attractions representing Austin's culture, such as the SoCo area. Cons: dirty, tourist-trap business, no originality more

6th street is packed with a wide variety of clubs to choose from. I'm from NY and was very impressed with it when I first moved here and any visitors from home love it too. But the prices can be sort of high, parking sucks, and it can get very crowded, especially on holidays such as halloween and new years. So if you don't mind the prices, finding a place to park and have cash to spare, go have a good time! Pros: variety, clubs, food Cons: parking sucks, crowded, no late night buses more

fun fun fun 7/25/2002

6th Street is awesome. It is a chance to listen to great music and enjoy the company of the Austin community. Pros: crowded, great entertainment Cons: not enough parking, crowded more

It all depends... 7/20/2002

I hear people saying that 6th Street is way over reated. And if you are out of college than it just gets annoying with all of the college students being ""crazy"". My therie is... Welcome to Austin you wanted fun, then put aside you your feelings about immature people and worry about you. Because in all actuality we (Austinites) don't care what your thinking about us. You have heard us say "" Keep Austin Weird"", well that is us in a nut shell. And that too is the heart of Sixth. Take it or leave it. Pros: people, clubs, music Cons: parking, parking, police more

Dance, dance, dance 6/27/2002

I know I'm too old to go to Sixth Street any more, but I admit it, I still love it. Aside from the one time when I was assaulted there (got sucker-punched in a crowd), I've always had a great time. Pay your $5 to park and you won't need your car again all night. You can eat dinner, go dancing, watch the game, drink your mind away and make new friends, all within a few block area. Worth the trip. more

Note to the 25 and over crowd ... 6/27/2002

Sixth Street is not the scene for you if you're already out of your Jell-O shots phase. For a more entertaining night out in Austin, head to the Warehouse District or catch some live music on Red River. Pros: close to 4th street Cons: college crowd more

do once, then move on 6/10/2002

This is a fun little area to check out, but it gets old. the college kids and the stale beer scene can only go far enough. There are a few good bars here, but this has become more of a touristy attraction, than the historic music district it once was. And the cops are very sensative. They close the treet on the weekends. One time a friend of mine thought they were closed and he and his wife walked across the street and got a ticket. What's up with that? more

mostly tacky 5/20/2002

Not much to see here except drunken college kids. For a mellower evening, head to Fourth Street. more
