If you are looking for a place this summer to get out of the hot sun then this is a a great place to take your children. I have not been there in a while but they use to always change some of their exhibits so the children will always see something new when they go. We have had the opporutnity to attend several parties at this museum and my children had a lot of fun. However, the parking situation is horrible, especially on weekends. My children have always had a great time when going to the museum. The staff have always been friendly and the musuem itself is very inviting for children.

Austin needed this museum. Austin needed an IMAX. Great place to take out of town guests. The permanent exhibits can get to be a bit much for kids after a few visits. A lot of reading to really appreciate the exhibits. Overall, it's a great place. It's beautiful! informative, educational, fun, etc, etc.

The Umlauf Sculpture Garden is a great spot for a romantic evening. When you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of town, this is the place to go to.
It's an excellent garden with a lot of sculptures by the known Umlauf sculptor. You'll be amazed by his creations and by the beauty of this place. I believe you can also rent this place for weddings or other events. I've never been to one but I bet it would be beautiful. It's peaceful and allows you to relax. Very good place for a different type of date or just to relax from the everyday stress.

Ok, the parking, or lack off is terrible. But the museum it's self is pretty amazing. My sons love this place, and they have been coming here for years. It can get a little crowded on the weekends, so I tend to avoid the crowd. They have baby/toddler only days where they restrict the museum to childrne under 3. If you call ahead they will warn you about any large groups scheduled to come. They also have some of the best day camos in town.
Pros: always different exhibits
Cons: parking, crowds

We tried to go see Spelling Bee in NYC last November, but the stage hand strike prohibited that. Glad to say we missed it, because Austin's Zachary Scott Theatre Center couldn't have done a better job! What a darling play! All of the actors were great and the entire evening was just a delight! My husband works for the Austin American Statesman, and he'll definitely be blogging about it! What a special show!

We (as a family) enjoy going to Museums around Texas and the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum is one we can visit over and over again. My kids are all into history and they always learn something new when we go. The building is huge with 3 floors of exhibits, that change fairly often. There's also an IMAX theater, Cafe and Museum gift shop! If you live in Texas, learning about Texas is the greatest gift you'll ever get.

A very nice little stop on your downtown gallery tour. It focuses on Mexican art, with a mix of folk and contemporary. Also always fun to visit during the dia de los muertos celebrations.

This has to be one of my favorite museums around Austin to visit. I wish my children were older so that they could appreciate this museum more. My favorite part of the museum is the IMAX theater which I always enjoy . They change their shows frequently which is nice. As a teacher I went on many fieldtrips to this museum and the children thoroughly enjoyed all the information provided. The leader of our tour was awesome! She was so friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. The museum is located close to the University of Texas campus which is nice to tour as well.

This is one of the best galleries for Hispanic art anywhere in Texas. They always have very interesting exhibits so make sure to go to their website or check the local Austin Chronicle to see what's happening when.
I've been to several exhibits there but the Mexican Posters that was traveling around the country a couple of years ago was by far the best I've ever been to. They also have a good selection of prints for sale and very good art book selection.
To find parking in this hard part of town, just head out to any side street off Congress and you'll likely find something easily.
