Shanghai Noble House Restaurant

We have gone to Shanghi Noble house for years and have never been disappointed. The service is right on every time and the food is just as wonderful. I think we have ordered everything on the menu at one time or another and it is always cooked just right, tasty, and a dish we would gladly order again and again. For a group we often reserve the round table which seats 8-10 easily and find it's corner location is just right. If you have not eaten here, give it a try, you will not be disappointed. more

So- I've been on my quest to find a decent General Tso in Portland. I'm about twenty Chinese joints in and I've noticed that most places here are using a distributed sauce rather than making their own. But I'd heard several good things about about this place, and looked it up here to find several praising reviews of their americanized cuisine, especially of their General. Here is the thing- If you are from the east coast and you're looking for a comparable dish out here- forget Noble House. In fact just forget it! I'm not going to dis the place overall, because it's obvious that they at least made this sauce fresh with my meal, and the rest of the experience was quite lovely. I have to say though, it tasted like a British person cooked my main course. The sauce was more like Worcestershire than anything else- not even appetizing in it's context, really. I pity the foul. What a wasted shell of a life it turned out to have had. Not fit for anything but consumption, the modern american chicken is. And then someone dumps... what was that exactly? all over it. And don't give me anything about authentic, please. Food is supposed to taste like food if you pay for it. I rated 4 stars because every thing else I had there was really fantastic, and I'm figuring that this item was the anomaly. The prices were more than reasonable- great atmosphere- very clean- respectable for almost any evening except a very romantic date- and the service was exemplary. Definitely four stars for Chinese in Portland. But no General I'm afraid. more

Went to Shanghai Noble house tonight, I have been there several times in the past and always had a good experience, but I felt like tonight they went above and beyond! I called them earlier in the day to ask if they offer steamed pork buns because I love them and haven't been able to find a restaurant nearby that serves them. They told me they didn't usually offer them but asked what time we would be coming for dinner and said they would make us some anyway. As soon as we got there we had menus, water, and a teapot of hot tea in front of us. Besides the pork buns (which were very yummy!) we ordered the paper wrapped chicken, and hot and sour soup as appetizers and the moo shu chicken & sizzling bean curd for our entrees. Everything was delicious. Our water was refilled often as well, which I really appreciate. 5 stars! Pros: Amazing moo shu chicken, very friendly and attentive staff Cons: No soy sauce on the table. First off quit complaining about ""real"" chinese food. unless your food has intestines, feet, or ears in it you are probably not eatting authentic Chinese food. What we call here in America Chinese food really doesn't exisit in China. If you want authentic go to Lucky Strike and eat some intestines- they're delicious. But if you are looking for deep fried hunks of meat covered in sweet strange sauces then Shanghai Noble House is a great place to go. Their food is not heavy and there is a lot of flavor. Even their Pork fried rice is better than anywhere I have eatten before. They use real chunks of tasty BBQ Pork. Usually the meat in fried rice is tasteless and unrecongizable. Years ago I had the honey praws here and in the 8 years since I have not had any place come even close to being as good as theirs. I haven't tried it here since then but I will in the near future. The staff is super friendly too. Our family tradition to go for Mom's birthday, and the food is better than your average 'American Chinese' food - though I'm not an expert, brother in law has done extensive travel in Asia and he seems to like the food OK, especially the good old General Tso. This is a fairly large, no-nonsense Chinese spot perfect for lunch, but suitable for dinner as well. It's located in a business park and there's always ample parking (covered, even!) The restaurant is clean, and while it won't win any hipness awards, it looks ... reliable. Lunch specials are dirt-cheap ($6.50 for soup, entree with rice, noodles, and crab rangoon) and while the lunch menu is fairly short, it has all the American Chinese favorites. Your table will be set up, complete with water, soup, and a server in a matter of seconds; your order can be customized any way you like, and the plates will make it out to your table just as you're finishing your soup. Their staff is almost psychic - always right there when you need them, very fast and helpful, and you don't have to wait for... anything, really. We have searched for a decent Chinese restaurant since moving here from Berkeley about 8 months ago. Noble House is terrific! The food is not unique but it is fresh and tasty with nice sauces and crisp veggies. We had the chicken trio, delicious, the string beans, yum, and the moo shoo pork -- the staff even made our pancake ""Chinese burritos"" for us! Our waiter was witty and charming, very efficient and professional but nice and friendly too. We were pleasantly surprised and will go back to try other menu items. Pros: Fresh food & great service. My boss treated his illustrious servants to a christmas lunch and he chose this place for some reason. The food here is a travesty to authentic chinese cooking, but if you're into bastardized chinese food made for the western world then this is the place for you. I talked to the waitress about their specialties but she told me it was all westernized stuff I wouldn't like that they were just trying to cater to the neighborhood folks and most asians didn't eat there. If you want some real chinese food then go to wong's king on 87th and division. However, if you do like western chinese food you'd probably like this place a lot. I've been going there for lunch for years - maybe four or five times a year. Excellent food, stellar service, with prices that can't be beat. Their hot-&-sour soup is exemplary as is their General Tso's chicken. If you are a fan of General Tsos' Chicken, this is the place to go. Huge pieces of very lightly breaded chicken are served in a dark, sweet, spicy sauce. It looks like these are cut from thigh, and that's probably why the meat is so moist but not fatty or greasy. This is the best I have found in either Seattle or Portland. I even stop in now and then and get just an order of this to go (get extra sauce on a to-go order as they tend to skimp). The other dishes I've had here are average to good, not great. Sungari Pearl has much better overall food, but you'll certainly pay for it. I have always had good service here, although the staff isn't too fluent with the English language... You simply must try the lettuce wraps.. they have always been my favorite from a menu full of wonderful food. The service, however, has never impressed me. Their lunch menu is awesome. You get your maincourse, soup, fried rice, noodles, tea all for under $6. String Bean shredded pork is where it is at. This guy I know eats the chicken with the peanuts in it. You know.. Not general tso (which is good there also but $.50 more than the other items) but uhh.. Oh yeah Kung Pao Chicken. We used our entertainment book coupon and decided to give Shanghai a try. We were seated promptly. Our waitress was friendly and fast. She even brought us a free order of green beans because we didn't order any vegtables with our meal!! I had honey walnut prawns. They were pretty good except there was too much sauce for my taste. My husband thought the sesame beef was very good. When we paid they didn't punch our city card but still gave us the discount. For that reason alone I will dine there again. Shanghai Noble House is hands down the best Chinese restarant in Portland. My favorite is the General Tso's Chicken. This is a must-order. The Green Beans are also excellent, as are the fried won ton's. Pretty much anything you order, you can't go wrong. There's a fully stocked bar, with a vast assortment of wines available. I love this place. We go here for lunch atleast once a week. The service is very nice, and bring you the food very quickly. Very good at remembering faces. more

The food here is the best value in town. For less than $6 (at lunch) you get tea, hot & sour or egg flour soup (if requested), and a huge entree-- generally more than I can eat. My favorite is the General Tao's chicken because it is actually spicy here. The service could be better, but I can handle the blunt service because it is fast and I can stop for lunch and be out in 20 minutes. I will make special trips just to eat here for lunch. more

Best Chinese food in Portland, hands down. Honey prawns are amazing, soups are great, three ingredients, anything with their black bean sauce... we stopped ordering off the menu long ago, and they always prepare whatever we ask for.
