Yes, the rates are good, yes there is art on the wall, yes someone offered me something to drink. This salon is *dirty*. It needs a good scrubbing and new paint to say the least...

Wonderful salon 4/11/2009

Olive is a fantastic salon, with consistent quality, a really comfortable atmosphere, and affordable prices. I've been going there for years and love it! Best of the many Minneapolis salons I've been to. Pros: Great atmosphere; affordable; great quality more

Love my hair! 3/3/2009

I just discovered Olive Salon and am so happy. I have fine hair that never really does anything. My stylist took a lot of time consulting with me and ended up giving me the best haircut! The salon was cute and I really liked the local art. more

Best Haircut 1/20/2009

I have challenging hair. Half straight, and curly. I went to Olive Salon, and requested help. I gave her complete freedom to try what she thought would work best, and I ended up with my favorite haircut ever. Pros: Experienced and honest staff, competitive rates, awsome product line. more

olive good! 1/12/2009

i have been going to carolyn at olive for my cuts and colors for many years. she always does an excellent job. i have referred many friends to this salon. also- i have crush on the receptionist. Pros: local art on the walls, friendly staff more

Olive rocks! 1/9/2009

Olive salon doubles as a salon an gallery, which is a perfect combo since you can browse the rotating art selection while you are waiting for your color to set. Sara at Olive is the best stylist I have ever had. I never have to know what I want before I go in because she has awesome and original ideas for my hair every time. Sara's talent is not a secret, so book far in advance! If you just can't wait, the other stylist at Olive are great too. The location is also a bonus since you can take your new do out on the town on Eat Street after you're done getting prettied up. Bonus number two: You might spot Sara's adorable Pom puppy on your next visit as she is a salon regular these days! more

Does hip = dirty? 12/30/2008

Yes, the rates are good, yes there is art on the wall, yes someone offered me something to drink. This salon is *dirty*. It needs a good scrubbing and new paint to say the least. I had an appointment shortly after they opened, and there was no way that there could have been so much hair and dirt on the floor already. Immediately upon walking in I almost left because of the grime--but based on previous reviews, I thought I would still give it a go. Pros: Inexpensive Cons: Dirty Dirty Dirty! more

AMAZING service 10/27/2008

I've been going to Olive for almost four years now. Eunice is an amazing stylist and she always keeps my hair cutting edge and funky yet professional. I like to say that she sculpts the style out of my hair like a sculpter makes art out of a block of marble. I have really thick wavy hair and when she's done each curl can do it's own thing. They are an honest and truly artistic staff. They are attentive without being pretentious. Also, they never pressure me to get more services than I need and I never feel pressured to buy their products. A ++++ Pros: Super artistic stylists and relaxed atmosphere. Cons: If I had to say one I guess parking, but I've always been able to park at the meter right outside. more

Well, not so great 6/23/2008

I was at this salon twice. My first time was great. The second time, I went for color and cut. The color was not at all what I had wanted..turned out dark and drab. I ended up adding my own highlights after. The cut wasnt done well, either, and I had challenges managing it from the get-go. Pros: upbeat place, and lots of good looking hair coming out of the place..just not mine. Cons: pay for on street parking and apparently, a stylist who didnt get what I wanted, and stylist ran late more

LOVED it 4/17/2008

I went to Olive for the first time this week. I saw the reviews online and wanted to give it a try. I had tried a local salon with unhappy results, even after a redo..I had also needed to find a new salon home as I was no longer able to see my prev. person as she was too$$$$$$. Anyway..so, I went to Olive and I was completely thrilled. Pros: Staff is quite skilled, listened well, FUN space, delightfully modern and high cool factor Cons: on street parking more

Russian Roulette 4/9/2008

Most of the haircuts I saw coming out of Olive were incredible. Unfortunately, I don't even KNOW how mine ended up so horrendous. The color I asked for (and showed! with pictures!) couldn't possibly be further from the color I got--I don't know how strawberry blonde translates to dark maroon, but apparently we don't all think this way. I came in wanting to get radiant and sun-wild for summer and ended up looking dark and depressing. There were communication problems with my stylist and he didn't seem to want to take much time to really figure out what I wanted. He was a sweet guy, but I could have done a much better job by myself with a $4.99 box dye and some Fiskers. However, the girl I went in with got one of the most stunning haircuts I've ever seen. I guess what I'd say is that I'd recommend this salon, but just be careful and make sure your stylist actually listens to you before he gives you $100 worth of ""whoops!"" Pros: Innovative, funky cuts and colors Cons: well, what happened to MY head was DEFINITELY a con. more

Very Very Very BEST to get a haircut! 8/31/2007

I was tired of going to salons and paying $50+ for a haircut that was not straight or shorter than I had asked. Most of time, the hairstylist was too busy talking about herself to pay attention to the cut itself.... I was not finding the perfect hair salon that every girl needs. So when a coworker suggest I try Olive Salon, I thought, ""why not?"" That was in 2003, and I have been going there ever since. For the past 4 years, I have driven the 70 mile round trip drive, and would not go anywhere else! I have seen Jonica, Megan and Carolyn. They are all awesome, friendly, and definitely know what they are doing! The thing that I cannot believe is their great prices ~ and their service is so much better than anywhere else. The girls are so trendy, but not in a pretentious way. I always feel welcome there. Your search for the perfect haircut will end there. Pros: Fun atmosphere, superb stylist skills, friendly service Cons: Wish they were closer to my house! more

More movement in my hair than it's seen in years. 6/18/2007

On a recent vacation in Minneapolis, I decided to save a few bucks over my Palo Alto, CA, stylist and try a cut here (lower cost of living). Olive had really appealing/cute artwork on their website, so despite fears that my needs for a low-maintenance cut wouldn't fit in with the way-more-hip-than-me hair cuts featured on their website, I booked an appointment. When I got there, they were really nice, offered me something to drink, chatted with me about the extreme heat and humidity, etc. The stylists all had these really fun, indie-rock type haircuts. A woman with a super-hip short bright red haircut with bangs (think Thelma from Scooby-Doo but in the same color as Elmo) came in for a cut, and seemed to be a regular. Again...will my stylist be bored/offended by my request? But NO! Olives can do both! Super-hip to more conservative--I'm fairly certain we both left happy! Jonica gave me a great cut--now even freshly out of a ponytail (which normally makes me look gross) I look totally hot! With so much motion added to my regularly limp hair, I'm now spoiled & my normal stylist just won't do...Darn you Jonica and your awesome cutting skills. Pros: easy bus access, hot cuts, great places to eat nearby Cons: none from my perspective more

Best Salon 5/1/2007

I'm a picky hair person. I change salons the way Paris Hilton goes thru men. When I moved to Minnesota about a year ago, I thought I would have to go from salon to salon to find the perfect place. more

Get hair only hot comic characters have 4/17/2007

First off, first time going there a few weeks ago. I knew I wanted something different but I didn't want to go too drastic and shave my head again, especially since it took about two years to grow it out to a point where I felt gorgeous again. But I hadn't cut my hair in all that time, I was full of split ends and the un-even growth pattern that come with growing the hair all over your head from scratch. Not too mention i'm not too high-maintainence so my hair isn't peak condition but I don't dye or iron it to make worse either. Pros: good staff, great service, great cut, no sales pressure, knowledgeble stylist and educational session Cons: the comb she used was purple...just kidding, no cons this place is great more

Amazining Staff, very creative! 9/17/2006

They made my hair look so good and added a lot of funk to my boring self with being too crazy for my job. I found my new salon! Pros: Skilled, creative staff Cons: no parking more

Outstanding customer service! 1/10/2006

I was referred to Olive by a friend when I moved here in 2004, and I have not gone anywhere else since then. Everytime I arrive, I'm greeted at the door with a smile, and all the staff seem polite and courteous. I love that they have new art on the walls from local artists, and I've never gotten a bad cut/color. I would have no trouble reccommending this salon to friends! Pros: appointment reminders, friendly staff more

Olive me 8/30/2005

I've been going to Olive Salon for about a year. It's hard for me to chose what salon to go to when my mom is a salon owner and hair stylist in Cali, but once I started going to Olive I haven't stopped. I've had cuts, highlights and dying done. Only once was there a touch up needed and my stylist had no problem having me back for a free fix. They also carry a top-of-the-line hair product line called Phyto. Phyto is the best hair products you could choose from: all natural and extremely efficient. When I had purple highlights done and/or re-touched Phyto kept my color vibrant for weeks longer than if I had used another brand. Olive is just like any other respectable salon- if you visit a stylist more than once your price is lower than your initial visit. And one more thing, Sarah is awesome. Pros: Quality, Cool staff, organized & artsy more

inconsistent 6/13/2005

The service I have received has been very inconsistent. I live fairly close by so I have tried them out numerous times in the past 4 years. I would say that the service has been satisfactory one out of every five visits. It is so annoying paying a large fee for a highlight, only to realize when you return home that they didn't apply the color all the way to the top of the scalp, so your roots show immediately afterwards. I also have noticed that four out of five times the stylist has horrific breath, and three of five times their appearance leaves much to be desired. However I do love the fact that they do not use Aveda products. Aveda sucks, and I hate that so many salons in Minnesota use it because it originates from here. Pros: No Aveda Products, Cute decor Cons: Inconsistant service, Stylists bad breath more

Best Salon in Minneapolis, hands down!!! 10/15/2003

Obviously, another person who reviewed the salon didn't know what s/he was talking about. I have been going to Olive for almost 2 years, and have always been treated EXTREMELY well. I always receive numerous compliments on haircuts/color. I love all of the staff at Olive and will continue to go there for all of my hair wants and needs. I have referred numerous friends and family to Olive and they all have been satisfied with the quality and the service that they have received. Thanks, Caroline for all of the great cuts! Pros: staff, atmosphere, service more
