Editorial review from Citysearch 10/11/2012

Decide to go to Old San Francisco Steak house tonight for our anniversary. We arrived about 5:30 p.m. and was told the resturant closed September 1st, unless we had a reservation. Since it was a last minute decision, we hadn't made a reservation. There is nothing on the website that states they have seasonal hours. Needless to say, they won't be getting any of my business in the future. If I am going to pay high prices for dinner, can go to the Tower of the America's and have a much better view!! more

This weekend we took a trip to San 5/28/2012

This weekend we took a trip to San Antonio from Houston. Years ago our Old San Francisco closed down and it was a major disappointment because we went there on a regular basis. Our first stop in San Antonio was to this restaurant. Upon arriving we noticed that the parking lot was full but the restaurant had some empty tables. There was a private party of some kind going on and everyone seemed to have a reservation but us. We waited an extremely long time to get a table, but they did eventually seat us. The service wasn't wonderful, it was very slow. The food was excellent. OSF has always made the steak exactly how we like. The salad wasn't wonderful, however. Getting our drinks refilled was something that was infrequent. The manager/chef came to our table and made sure everything was good. My mom was not happy with a particular food item and they made it right. I am so glad that there is a OSF still around and wish there was one in Houston still. We will be back, but next time we plan to have a reservation because it seems that they are a necessity. more

Enjoyed our evening 4/18/2011

We enjoyed our experience last week. The service was excellent, and the employees were very attentive and personable. Our steak was cooked as requested. The sides and appetizers were very good, and minor requests were accomodated graciously. The ""fiesta"" was happening in San Antonio at the time, and we were very pleased to be away from the crowd. The quality and preparation of food compared to the price was consistent with similar values in our home market. more

mediocre food for an expensive price 10/17/2010

My companion and I were disappointed with the food. My $38 steak was just OK and my companion's fish had a stong fishy taste and was hard. The cheese was good as was the service. At $14 a gkass, the wine was grossly overpriced. The show and piano player/singer was very good. If we go back, we will stick to the lower priced dishes as the high end items are not worth the price. more

Warning>>> do not eat here!! 9/11/2010

Sorry folks but this place needs to keep the doors closed. The service was very good but the food was less than average. The steak was not tender and lacked flavor. The baked potato was not done all the way.Now I know why the parking lot was empty. To top it off when we get the bill (just two of us) they decided to add the TIP. Well where I come from the TIP is base on service. We talked to the assistant manager( he was great) and retrieved the manager( the cook) and the cook didn't really care to here about what we were saying. WE WILL NEVER GO BACK !!!! I don't even want to rate this but I have to so I can post this!!! more

Not Worth It.... 7/18/2010

Went to Old Sanfrancisco for our 30th anniversary. The empty parking lot on a Saturday night was our first sign not to eat here. This place was dead and boring and had an awful smell. Food was OK but not worth 100 bucks. Not expecting the forgetful waitress to add in a hudge tip for a party of 2. This place will not be open long. more

What a change! 10/31/2009

I hadn't been to OSF in around 3 years or so. The last time I went, the food was so-so and overpriced. I saw that it had re-opened and my wife and I decided to give it another chance. It was a favorite place of mine in the 90's, and deserved a second chance. Wow! What a difference an owner makes! The food was incredible and the service was some of the best I've EVER had! (Thanks, Tony...) If you've ever been a fan of OSF, go back. You won't be disappointed! Pros: Incredible service, wonderful food! more

GREAT DINING OFF THE RIVERWALK 10/27/2009

My wife and I were visiting San Antonio this week and after dining 4 days at Riverwalk restaurants we wanted a change of pace and San Francisco Steakhouse provided great fun and fine dining in a friendly informal atmosphere.\r Under new management with a friendly helpful staff, the dininng experience was great fun from the pretty young lady swinging in the air in the red velvet swing, good music, plentiful drinks and the finest steaks to the swiss cheese wedge was awesome, too.\r Pros: BEST STEAKS more

What a Blessing! 8/31/2009

I am from Houston TX and had business in San Antonio this weekend. Well we were looking for a place to eat and just for fun I said ""lets google The Old San Francisco Steak House, maybe they might have 1 open, yeah right we all said"". However, to our suprise we saw it on google so I called and sure enough it was open. We made our way to the restaraunt and were greeted and seated immediately. Our server was wonderful and the food and presentation of our platers were wonderful. We were so impresed with the food that we wanted to speak with the chef to give him Kudos for a job well done. He was not available to speak with us so the waiter brought the owner to our table. We spoke with her and she immediately made us feel welcomed. She told us her story of how she was Blessed with the restaurant and the story of the cheese which was hillarious (Cheese police). All in all this was a wonderful dining experience and I would definitely give it 5 stars. We will be back real soon just to eat at this restaurant. Also, there was a wedding going on in the banquet room which was beautiful. I would recommend this restaurant to all who live in San Antonio and from far away. May God bless Mrs. Esparza, her family and all her wonderful staff. \r Thanks for a great dining experience, see you all soon!! Pros: Everything Cons: That it is 187 miles away from my home! more

Best Dinning Experience In A Long Time. 8/31/2009

My family and I were in San Antonio for the weekend. While on our visit we were deciding on a place for dinner. In conversation the Old San Francisco Steakhouse was brought up. Knowing that the franchise had been closed down we googled it anyway. Much to our amazement there was a location in San Antonio that was open for business. Upon are arrival we were greeted at the door and shown to a table promptly. The waiter attended to us immediately. The supporting wait staff brought us are 10lb block of cheese and freshly baked bread. Our drink and salads were brought to us in a timely manner as was our choices for the main course. Drinks were refilled without us having to ask and a request for a non menu item was promptly filled. In all this is one of the best, if not the best dinning experiences I’ve ever had. The food was delicious and the presentation was excellent. After our dinner we wanted to give our compliments to the chef. We were informed that he was extremely busy and would try to come to our table. The waiter asked if we would like to speak to the owner, much to our delight it was a pleasure meeting her. We expressed to her what a wonderful dinner we had. She went on to tell us about how she purchased the franchise and all the obstacles she faced in reopening the restaurant. She mentioned to us how her hard work, determination, and faith in God made it all possible. My family and I would like to commend Veronica Esparza and all her staff for a job superbly well done. May God continue to bless you and your family and all of your employees. Pros: Everything. Cons: We don't live in San Antonio more

Great food.... 3/23/2009

My daughter worked her last 2 years of high school and 3 years of college at the steak house in Dallas. She was a swinger and hostess and was a secertary in the main office during her summer breaks for one of the owners and enjoyed all. Her pay and tips were very generous and they also paid for her books for one semester in college. \r My husband and I were in San Antonio during spring break '09 and chose to go to the steak house there since the one in Dallas is no longer open. Our wait was about 30 mins. due to a wedding reception going on but the wait was well worth the time. When we were seated we immediately was treated with the block of swiss cheese and freash hot bread w/butter. Our waiter was great. He brought our salads and OH MY they were out of this world. I would love to know what the croutons were made of. Had to wait a while for our steaks but they were well worth it too. So tender and very tasteful. All in all....all was very good and sad that we no longer have a steak house in the Dallas , Ft Worth area anymore. \r Everyone in the resturant was very friendly and to our surprise the owner made several passes to check on us. She informed us she was the new owner and I have to say that hopefully more will go to the steak house and see my review is correct. \r Thanks again,OSFSH for a wonderful evening full of memories of our past times at the OSFSH in Dallas. And if you ever want to open one up in Ft Worth should be well worth your time to check it out. Nothing like OSFSH in our area at all and with the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium opening up I know people will be going to Cowtown (FT WORTH) for a visit and a wonderful steak! Pros: All was good .... Cons: Had to wait for a table but was worth the wait..... more

Old San Francisco Steakhouse in San Antonio 2/19/2009

I worked at the OSFSH while in highschool during the years of 1980-1982. This was the best place too work and I will never forget my time there. The place was run by Mr. Postolos and the manager was Richard. I started as a tray toter and worked my way up to busboy and also operated the flaming desert cart. At that time there were only waitresses and no waiters. The place was always packed and I remember making really good money from tips. From Bob the piano man, Panchito the head cook, and to all the waitresses abd busboys Kurt, Mike, George, and Bob. The blocks of cheese actually start out as 90-100lb blocks. We would cut them down using piano wire. Us busboys would put on quit a show bussing the tables. There was pride in all of the workers back then. The food was the best as us busboys always knew how to get specials from the cooks and drinks from the bartenders. Good times!! So sorry to hear things have gone down hill. Pros: Back in the day- this was the place to eat more

We had a great time. 1/30/2009

We were warmly greeted and seated promptly. Our waiter was very attentive. Always enjoy having the block of swiss cheese and warm bread brought to our table. Enjoyed fine wine as we were being attended to. Our meals were superb. The steaks were cooked to perfection. The live music and girl on the swing are always very special. We had the Banana's Foster for dessert and it was a wonderful way to end a very enjoyable evening out. Will definitely go back. Pros: Parking, service, food more

Stay away if you cherish your old memories of OSF 1/13/2009

Anyone writing a positive review for OSF is either being paid to do it or never went to the OSF back when it was a great place. I used to love going there on a date or just to celebrate back in the mid-early 90's, and it's utterly depressing to see how far it's fallen. The waiters were absolutely terrible, and we had to wait almost an hour for a table despite the fact that we could see quite a few open ones from the waiting room. Once we actually HAD a table we had to wait another hour for our food. Drink refills were hard to come by, and we had to repeatedly pester a waiter for any kind of service.\r \r I can't even talk about the decline in food quality, it's just too depressing. All I'll say is stay away from the surf-and-turf. \r \r If you have fond memories of this place from a decade or more ago and want to keep them, stay away until there's new management. Pros: Parking was good. Cons: Everything else. more

outstanding prime rib and wine!!!! 10/14/2008

We visited the Old San Francisco Steak House for our Anniversary and had the best time ever!! Our waiter, Mike, helped us select an ouststanding bottle of wine from California, and most of their wines are very competitively priced!! My wife had prime rib, and i had the ny strip--preparerd perfectly, and delicious.Service was outstanding, and the swing girl was great. We spoke with the manager, and heexplained that they are under new management and owners. I highly recommend this restaurant. Ask for Mike when you make your reservation! Pros: great place more

$108.00 Bottle of Wine!!!! We All HEARD You That Night !!!! 10/3/2008

I was just looking, and I never do this sort of thing, But it's just not RIGHT!!!! So here it goes!\r We were there when this man and his ""nice"" and RUDE family were making a scene at this great restaurant, and by the way the Prime Rib was the best I've had anywhere in the U.S.A.. We know you had the mid-price vino, you should have had a better bottle, maybe the $300.00 one, then we would all be impressed! The restaurant does have one! Anyway, we could here this RUDE man all the way across the room, and it's a large, large room. The bartender made ""dam"" good drinks, so We have no idea what they were talking about on the drinks, and yes we had 2 of the $185.00 or so (I didn't really check the price) bottles, but I didn't let my party and the rest of the restaurant guest know it! The place was packed and the Prime Rib was great, but it would be understandable they would have ""sold out"" of it. Come on, get them a break, I've been to all types of places before, 4 and 5 star , mine you, and they sell -out , sometimes, of there best dishes or in this case, cuts of meat. \r The manager was great, he also came to our table and asked if everything was well with me and my guest at the table. When we mentioned the ""RUDE FAMILY"" he played it off, as to not ruining our evening. He never mentioned or talked about them (because, I wanted to know!) That is the sign of a great, respectable man , who know his business and people skills in this industry!\r To this ""wine-ing"" , thoughtless, rude, inconsiderit , arrogant , self- indulgent, ""dude"", who thinks the world revovles around him, take you and your so-called ""family"" some where like "" The Taco Hut"", where you belong, and for the record the you don't really have to show your ""ture colors"" in your writing.\r I really didn't want to spend this time doing this, but people like this need to ""chill"". Things happen, and this wonderful restaurant shouldn't be in a bad review, don't believe me? TRY THEM! We've been there twice seen. Pros: Great Food, Ambience Cons: Need a to make a Reservation more

Do not go to the Old San Francisco Steak House, stay away!!!! 9/13/2008

My family& I had been regular customers of the OSFSH since 1989, always pleased with the service and the quality of the food. Our favorite waitress for almost 2 decades, Dolores, always knew one of our children (now 23& 19) had made straight ""A's"" on their report card because we always celebrated their success and achievement with a nice dinner and a ride on the swring. However, the OSFSH had been run into the ground and on two ocassions they never had what we ordered and tried to charge us for NAPA wine when serving us a blend!!!! We swore after two times that we would never go back again and sure enough, a couple of months later they closed down. Well, on 9/13/08 our daughter, a UT grad and her boyfriend who just moved back to SA said it had re-opened and we should give it a try. We called ahead to make sure the newly opened OSFHS had the escargot, block of swiss cheese and the prime rib before giving them another try. Well, we made reservations, arrived at 8:00pm sharp, they had the $108.00 bottle of wine we ordered and served up the block of chesse with cold bread but the waiter did not take our order until (8:45PM) 45 minutes later. We brought this to the attention of the manager and he apologized profusley offering to buy our appetizers (which we recieved with our salads) and we said that wasn't necessry as long as he was aware of the delay in service. Ah ha, 45 minutes later (9:45PM) the waiter came to our table to say they had run out of prime rib....which was why we went to the restaurant in the first place. We called the manager back insisting that they tab us out so we could leave, they made us wait another 10 minutes until I went to the hostess area and insisted on paying out. Do not go to the OSFSH unless you want substandard service and want to be put through HE?? more

Great Meal and Service 8/21/2007

I visited the OSF with two friends while on business in San Antonio in May 2007 and found the place an excellent evenings entertainment. Having ate at several other Steak Houses in the area we wanted something different for our last evening in the US before heading back to the UK.\r \r On arrival we were greated by two lovely ladies who showed us to our table and took our drinks order. We were then served by a guy for the rest of the evening who firstly brought a huge chunk of Swiss cheese and fresh crusty bread. It was difficult to take it easy as it was soo delicious.\r \r Then the lovely 'Miss Sarah', one of the ladies who had welcomed us earlier, came onto the stage and did her act on the red velvet swing to frantic piano playing! It was very entertaining for all the customers who were in that evening. Even the young children found her ability to swing so high amazing!\r \r After the performance we were invited on stage to have our pictures taken with Sarah and the swing! I have some jealous friends here now! She even took time to let the small children have a go on the swing. \r \r Being from the UK, where we do not really have anything like this in our restaurants, we all found it a unique experience. \r \r For our starters (appetiser) we had fresh oysters, shrimps and crab claws which were served on a large plate and was enough for us all too share.\r \r Our main meal consisted of rib eye steak and loaded baked potatos. The meat was excellently cooked and was the best that I had while in Texas.\r \r Overall our experience of the OSF was great. The staff that we met that night made us very welcome and worked very had to ensure that all the customers requirements were catered for.\r \r I would certainly visit this place again and hope that the great staff stick at it as I am sure with time and the right management and marketing the place will be a success. Alternatively open one in the UK! It would go down great here! more
