What a great experience! 8/6/2011

I was looking for a engagement ring setting for a diamond, and my friend recommended Maloy's. I popped in, and they happily removed the diamond from the stud earring it was set in and cleaned it. The woman helping us brought out many settings that suited my taste, and that were in my price range! She had enough of an opinion to be helpful, without being pushy - and her opinion was in favor of the cheaper setting! The thing that really pushed this experience over into incredible, though, was when it came to getting the diamond actually set in the ring. She let me know that it would probably take about a week. I told her not to worry, as we were leaving town in a few days, and so wouldn't be here to pick it up that soon, anyways. She expressed her sadness that I wouldn't have the ring for my trip, and said she'd try and have them move it to the front so it would be ready for me to pick up before leaving! I said I wouldn't get my hopes up, as it seemed unlikely that they'd be able to get it done in TWO DAYS. It was ready the next morning. Unbelievable. I highly recommend Maloy's for service, selection, and just being a great local business! more

not worth the time 3/5/2011

Like other people who have written in I too have had a bad experience a Maloy's the owner's now exwife was very rude to me when I took in some watches to have them cleaned. When I got my first watch back the hands weren't even attached. I've been there a handful of times and there is always attitude. more

Disrespectful and overpriced...Great Employees Rude owner 10/21/2010

I have just recently had a ring made there and they are currently working on another two which will be the two that are ever made there. The first time was a pleasure my ring was done quick and they did a decent job on it. This time around not only could they not stick to their promises but in my opinion they overcharged me and when I confronted San Maloy about the issue he said that He's the owner and employees cant make the promises which is absolutely absurd. He also stated that I was getting a great deal and the employee miss quoted me and I should be charged more. I spoke to another local Jeweler and he said he could of done it for the price of one ring. I will never step foot in Maloys ever again. There are many great Jewelers in town and Maloys would NOT be one of them! Its a hit or miss at this place and why risk it when u can walk 2 blocks in any direction and find many more Jewelers. more

Great work, friendly and helpful staff, QUICK QUICK QUICK 8/31/2010

Maloy's exceeded the quality and performance of a big-box jeweler on all points in resizing my ring. My prior experience with a big-box jeweler was frustrating because I received no help determining the correct size (and consequently my ring was too large), it took over a week to get my engagement ring back while it was being resized, the ring had dips and bulges where it had been resized, and I found the staff to be a little snooty. more

Nice stuff, unhelpful staff. Very frustrating. 8/23/2010

I found my wedding ring here and at first it felt like a good experience. When I got it back from having it sized it felt too small. I was told that it was really a good fit (something I feel should be subjective, especially since I was the one wearing it). Somehow I felt like I offended them by having a different opinion. Regardless, I wanted sincere help to get the right size but what I got was attitude. I got it sized up, the conversation around this was slightly painful and I felt like they wanted to make sure I knew I was making the wrong decision. I went a little bigger than my instinct because ""if it was smaller then I probably won't be happy with it and will come in again to get it re sized"". Well, second time around it was too big. They made sure to tell me on three different occasions that I made that decision and that I signed and initialed the paperwork asking for it. They get to be right but they also lost a customer and now I am taking my ring somewhere else. I called back to get the two sizes of my ring, and had another weird interaction. I started to feel like I was crazy for wanting real help to get a good fit. Yuck, so sad... more

Maloy's is great 4/21/2010

My husband died last year. I took my ring and my husband's wedding band into Maloy's because I wanted a new ring made out of both rings - not welded together. The designer was Eve and she listened well, was able to translate what I wanted into several beautiful drawings. She highlighted a design from my ring that my husband and I had always loved, but that I did not think about including in the new ring. The ring was ready in about a week even though I said no rush and the price was very fair and reasonable. The ring was more beautiful than I had imagined it could be; I have received many compliments. I felt very cared for during this entire process. Pros: Responsive, creative, excellent service more

lovely experience 6/30/2009

I'm puzzled by the negative reviews. I had a great experience in finding my gorgeous 100+-yr-old ring, I got wonderful service from jewelers and salespeople alike, and my fiance was also treated well and enjoyed his dealings with the store...what gives? Perhaps it's just personal perspective - some folks might like a bigger store and a different vibe. This place was just right for me though; charming and warm. Pros: unique pieces, no heavy sales pitch more

Maloys unpleasant service 6/20/2009

After shopping around town for an engagement stone, my soon- to -be finance and I were sent to Maloys. The lady with whom we spoke with was extremely condescending, and abrasive. She spoke poorly of our jeweler and tried talking us into having our ring made there. She also told us she was the only one in town to have a set of stones we were looking for, when it truth they are quite common. Although we were interested in some of her products, we choose to purchase elsewhere because of how poorly we were treated. It was the right choice because we found the perfect diamond a couple days later, for a much better price, from a lady who made our experience special. There are some truly excellent antique jewelers in town, Maloys just isn't one of them. more

Don't be fooled by their advertisements . . . 2/2/2009

Maloy's does a remarkable job of advertising their store in local newspapers and magazines. Step inside though and you will see the reality does not match their clever marketing. The woman who assessed the repairs and determined the cost to resize my engagement ring (a modest ring from the 1930s once worn by my fiance's grandma) did so in a manner that was so demeaning we could not wait to politely leave! Afterward, we walked about three blocks up to Goldmark Jewelers (1000 S.W. Taylor Street) where we met Cal Brockman. He assessed, expertly repaired, and sized the same ring for half the cost, and without any of the attitude. In fact, from the moment we walked in, he was a perfect gentleman. more

walk in, look around, walk right back out 1/21/2009

I looked at vintage engagement rings in multiple states, and I must say that this was probably my poorest experience. The problem is that they don't do anything particularly well. The service was ok, the location and shop atmosphere were ok, the selection was slim--it was just a blah experience all the way around. I certainly didn't have a bad experience, but the market is too competitive to leave your customer without something to hang their hat on. Pros: Don't have to vie with other customers for the clerk's attention Cons: The store is empty for a reason... more

Mixed feelings 11/7/2008

My fiance (now husband) and I went into Maloy's to shop for an engagement ring. They had a good selection of antique and unusual which I was initially very excited about after some unpleasant experiences in the diamond district. We found a lovely old cut diamond at a fair price and proceeded to work with them to design the setting. We had an agreed upon price for the diamond and setting combined which was handwritten on our invoice and they turned it out in about a month. However, when my husband went to pick the ring up and settle the payment, they told him the price written on the invoice was only for the setting and the diamond price wasn't included. So in essence they tried to charge us a few THOUSAND dollars extra. I would have stuck to my guns and refused to pay it but my husband ended up compromising with them and paid an extra 1000. It marred what should have been a wonderful experience and I did not go back to them to design my wedding band. The e-ring setting isn't well done and I plan to have it reset correctly...elsewhere. Moral of this story? Insist on a CLEARLY itemized typed invoice that leaves NO room for error when designing a piece OR only buy loose stones or already set pieces with firm prices from this store. Another disheartening sight: while we were in the store, we saw a older lady bring in a beautiful gold pocketwatch to sell. I was heartbroken to hear how she was blatently lowballed. I know it's only business but it was still painful to watch...and certainly not something you would want your customers to see. Pros: good selection of antique pieces Cons: mediocre workmanship, unprofessional invoicing practices more

Maloy's is fabu! 10/8/2008

I have had many jewelry repairs, commissions and appraisals done by Maloy's over the years- everything has been done exceptionally well, no matter if it was large or small. Pros: beautiful work, helpful, informative more

The perfect ring!!! The women that run this store are amazing!!! 9/23/2008

I had the privalege of purchasing my engagement ring here for my now-fiance. She was looking for something completely unique and I found the perfect ring at Maloy's. The three women that I met that run the place were so helpful in every aspect. I had been looking for a while and each store I went into had a different vibe. But this place was so relaxed and no-pressure. They made sure I was happy and my fiance LOVES her ring. I cannot thank Maloy's enough for making the experience fun and exciting :-) They even rushed her ring sizing for us. We dropped it off on a Saturday afternoon, went and had lunch, and it was finished and cleaned by the time we were done. Thank you Maloy's! Pros: Unique jewlry, great service, relaxed atmosphere, found the perfect ring! Cons: Proposing was a little scary... more

Tricky owners and employees. 9/3/2008

The store says that they will fix any jewerly that you buy. But they can take for ever and charge you an arm and a leg for it. They do not give you your money back, unless you call the Office for help with buyers in Oregon. more

They won't guarantee their work. 8/24/2008

I have had two bad repairs and one ongoing nightmare. When I had a broken prong on the basket of a ring repaired it came back mis-shapen. When I complained I was told they could replace the basket for ""only wholesale"" price. I finally took my ring to Canada where I got much better advice, problem solved, same-day service, for a fraction of the cost. I do find their attitude to be quite condescending and unapologetic. more

Excellent for people without jewlery buying experience 4/16/2008

My fiancee purchased our engagement ring at Maloy's in January. It is simple and perfect and came with an amazing story. Anyone interested in conflict-free diamonds, and ""recyling"" jewlery should come to Maloy's. The resize only took twenty minutes when we came in after he proposed. The staff were very knowledgable and helpful. Pros: Staff assistance without pressure. Nothing like the mall stores. Cons: Gold and Jewelry are expensive. more

high prices, ok merchandize 3/23/2008

i was a little disappointed in the repair work done to my grandfather's watch. the workmanship was only ok and the prices steep for the quality (and was more than the estimate). i will not have any more repair work done here, but will instead go to margulis in pdx or rossoffs in seattle. the antique selection is ok for a store of its size, but i prefer margulis, arnells or rossoffs. more

Maloys is the BEST! 12/13/2007

I had two wedding bands made here to match my 1920's platinum engagement ring and the work they did was absolutely amazing! They were able to match it exactly, it looks like it was always a set and I love it more every time I look at it! Not to mention they had them done in two weeks! My sister got a ring here to go with her engagement ring as well which is gorgeous! The first time I heard of Maloys was after falling in love with a friends ring that was made there as well, one of the most unique pieces I'd ever seen. So I am speaking not only from personal experience, but from knowing many happy customers, when saying that Maloys is the greatest! The staff is so helpful, unpretentious and friendly and the prices are totally reasonable. I can't imagine a better experience. Thank you Maloys! Pros: Unique place, great quality, timely, affordable, lovely staff. more

don't call me STUPID!! i collect this stuff! 8/10/2007

i have NEVER publicly berated a small business, but i might do it now... i will never set foot in this establishment again. their selection is beautiful (though VERY pricey), the employees are friendly (if you don't complain), and it IS a very special place...but they are quick to lure one into a trust of their repair skills (which seem to depend on your perceived wealth)...i brought my antique engagement ring to them for some simple repairs and sizing, and they BUTCHERED it. and then yelled at me for complaining. and then i had to wait a loooong time while a bottle of champagne was pulled out of the back for another gentleman who they seemed to know and was spending a LOT more money than i was... the problem was never resolved, and since they don't really keep good paperwork, there was nothing i could do about it. Pros: beautiful stuff, ever-changing selection, vintage/antique is where it's at. Cons: meanies when crossed, fair to poor skills at repairs (seemingly by choice), unnecessarily expensive more

First Class 5/18/2007

I have been shopping at Maloy's for years. My first experience was a beautifully designed ring to hold the 1920's circa diamond given to me by my mother-in-law. I am constantly receiving compliments and am happy to tell everyone where it came from. Since then I have purchased several wonderfully unique pieces. It is never a dissapointment to drop in to see what is in the case and I am always greeted as an ""old friend."" I highly recommend Maloy's as a place to find unique jewely items or to have something created for you personally. Pros: friendly, knowledgable staff more
