great hangout place for quality grub 10/13/2005

Kramerbooks is a great place any time of day—for a big brunch, a good quality dinner, or a delicious pie & coffee! I am really in love with their pies—especially their peach cobbler and their goober pie. SO GOOD! Their coffee is also quite well made. I have always found the service decent, except for ordering at the bar. The women behind that bar are Really rude, to put it kindly. more

Bookstore-restaurant hybrid 8/17/2005

Afterwords is the restaurant associated with Kramerbooks bookstore, or Kramerbooks the best restaurant waiting area ever. This is not the bookstore where Bill and Monica met to arrange their liaisons dangereuses, but it is a DuPont institution nonetheless. The food is good, but not great, while the desserts are great, but not good. Sit outside to maximize people-watching. The sampler plates with a pitcher of beer can make your evening fly by. more

Overpriced and disappointing 6/30/2005

On a recent visit to DC, I stopped by Kramerbooks, a recommended bookstore in the DuPont Circle area, and stayed on for lunch at the attached cafe, Afterwords. This is a restaurant that is clearly in business because it's a convenient, trendy place to eat, not because people are coming back for the food. It took a while to get seated, which is acceptable when you have a great bookstore to browse while you wait for your name to be called. But the service did not improve once I was seated. My food was okay, certainly not great, and was very expensive for what it was. I've heard they have great desserts and brunch dishes, but I'm not inclined to return. more

Best Brunch Spot with Friends is at Kramerbooks 6/24/2005

Kramerbooks and Afterwords Cafe has been a favorite brunch spot for my friends for a while. The blueberry pancakes are divine, the french toast is delicious, and the mimosas are perfect for pushing you back over the edge of your hangover. The restaurant is also open late at night with fabulous desserts and coffee-liquor concoctions. But brunch is a must. more

Editorial
  • When it opened in 1976, Afterwords Cafe--nestled within Dupont's Kramerbooks--was pioneering in being the first bookstore to have both a full bar as well as food, cappuccino and espresso. It remains a favorite today, where patrons browse books and listen to live music while waiting for a table for brunch, dinner, or a late-night meal after last call.
