Where's the customer service? 9/28/2009

During the course of our dinner there last week, a matter came up that needed the managers attention. My request was ignored/refused by the waitress/server (or I suspect by the manager) resulting in a very unpleasant dining experience. Business was quiet, so being too busy isn't an excuse. Although the food is generally good, the lack of respectful customer service and overall negative attitude makes this visit our last. Pros: Food is above average Cons: Customer service more

Tacky ambiance, slow service, and terrrible food. 8/7/2008

My friend suggested this part of town, so I did some reviewing and found Kikugawa to have the best ratings on this beautiful strip. I was disappointed with the restaurant. The caterpillar role had hardly any eel in it and the special sauce on the over baked bay scallops and mushrooms ""dynamite"" tasted closer to hollandaise than anything. The green tea tasted like hay and the server had very little knowledge about the food. As far as selection it all looked pretty expansive except for the maki rolls. The style is very 1990's with its cheap wood and teal colors. And worst yet NO patio for this great location. Price's are fair. Pros: Location Cons: Too many! more

Favorite Japanese Restaurant 4/21/2008

The tempura is light, fluffy, and full of flavor; by far the best in town. The bento boxes are also very flavorful. Love the Japanese atmosphere. Truly my favorite Japanese resturant in town. Pros: Taste of Food more

A worthwhile spot 1/29/2008

I've been here a number of times and have enjoyed. The views from the one spot are fantastic, the main dining room is boring but there is also another area that one dines while sitting low to the ground on pillows (semi-authentic). The sushi is good but nothing extraordinary. I really enjoy the Bento as well as the teriaki. I would not say this is $$$ but more $$; especially so if you own a happenings/entertainment book! Pros: Good food, great views from one room, fun seating in other room Cons: Parking (meter), small soda glasses, main dining room is dated more

Sushi was fresh, tasty and atmosphere was quiet and enjoyable. 10/27/2006

As a lover of sushi, a friend of mine and I went to Kikugawa last night and we were greated promptly. Even though the place wasn't very busy, the service was prompt and courteous. The staff was in Japanese dress. If you are not a sushi expert, the cool thing they had on the tables were a menu with pictures so you know what something looks like. This came in handy when I ordered the Specialty Platter with 8 pieces of various types. more

great japanese crusine 7/4/2006

i had sukiyaki & vege tempura, my friends tried bendo dinner, and we are all very satisfied with the food. the service is good, too. however, we were taxed for 10%.... Pros: good food, service, atmosphere more

Good food, understaffed 2/14/2006

I've been to Kikugawa twice after finding it on CitySearch and reading that it was the ""best sushi in the TC."" I've been to other good sushi joints around the US and Canada and Kikugawa is on par with ""good"" sushi. As others have said, the restaurant is large and has nice views. Once we were one of three groups so the service was prompt. The last time we were there was Valentine's Day and it was not pleasant. We were seated immediately but it took 45 minutes for appetizers to arrive. The sushi dinners arrived shortly after but the cooked dinners took another 30 minutes (!) to arrive. The staff was very cordial and polite but clearly overworked on one of the busiest nights of the year. Recommended for casual dining on an off night. Pros: Food, View Cons: Understaffed more

Amazing sushi and sashimi! 10/19/2005

The food here is sublime. I would ask to sit at the sushi bar, so you can watch the chefs turn out these fascinating creations. I recommend the sashimi roll - it's like a regular roll on steroids, and you don't have any rice taking up space in your stomach! and if you're into cooked food, the yakiniku is the most amazing beef dish EVER. someone in our group didn't eat beef, so she just spread the sauce over her rice - it is THAT good. And of course - fried ice cream! Pros: Food, Parking in the ramp is comped Cons: Nothing, really :) more

Sushi sashimi satisfaction! 10/13/2005

I love Kikugawa! I have been there many times- by myself, with my boyfriend, and with a large group (we sat in a beautiful, private tatame room), and every time has been equally wonderful. The ambience is great, the skyline/riverfront view fantastic, and the sushi perfectly delectable. I was sad to see the negative reviews about this place, so I had to put in my two cents' worth. My sashimi has always been fresh, and sushi just the way I ordered it (I'm a picky eater, so that says something!). Also, I've never had any problems with the waitstaff or the managers. They're always very friendly and helpful. Pros: Ambience, Friendly Waitstaff, Fresh fish! more

So Close 4/17/2005

Have you ever been to a restaurant that youre just sure will be great, but turns out to be a disappointment? Its definitely the case with Kikugawa. It has the potential for greatness. But it just drops the ball on details. We sat in the front facing the city. Youll immediately notice the cheap tables and chairs that kill the otherwise well-done decor. This was only one of many missed details. We ordered the gourmet dinner which turned out to be several samples of various types of fish, chicken, and beef all in the exact same Teriyaki sauce. The exact same. Mmmmm, this tastes like the last dish! The waitress was very overworked, even for a Thursday. Overall, we felt it was a sub-par fast-food-ish restaurant trying to be more than it is. If youre looking for ok food with a great view, check this out. Otherwise dont. Pros: Outstanding View Cons: Sub-Par Food, Slow Service, Perpetual Teriyaki more

Worst sushi experience EVER! 2/25/2005

In the past few months I have gone to Kikugawa a few times and I have been extremely disappointed by the horrendous service and poor quality fish. I heard that they have recently attained new ownership and it shows, very poorly. Our most recent experience assured that I will never eat there again. We waited an HOUR AND A HALF for our meal (sushi), didn't even get our sashimi appetizer until then. Worst of all, we were served the very end tough bits of tuna steak in our sashimi that should have been thrown out by any decent sushi chef. They admitted this was the last of the tuna, but it NEVER should have been served. It was disgusting that they tried to pass this as if we wouldn't notice. The rest of the sushi was mediocre. I am a huge sushi fan, but I will never eat here again. Cons: poor quality fish, horrible service more

The Worst Service Ever 1/25/2005

For the price that we paid we deserve so much better. We wait 20 minutes for the soup, 30 minutes for a glass of water, 15 minutes for cherry coke, 15 minutes for appetizer plate, 30 minutes for the waitress to get back and get our entree order. We talked to the manager, he said, they had a party and the waitress had a handfull. I don't care. 2 people or 10 people, I paid the same amount of price. And after all of that, he 'generously' said that the drinks are free. Which is nothing and insulting, because we didn't drink alcohol. Other places at least gave us one of the entree or appetizer for free when they made mistake. I worked in a restaurant in the past, and I never treated my customer like that. My husband and I ussualy are very patient, not that night. Pros: Good food, Great ambiance Cons: , poor service more

Bad Manners 9/23/2004

When you have a party of 8 or more one would expect to have the 15% tip added to the bill, now if you have a party of 6 this is not expected. When we finished dinner and paid our bill, one gal in our party had to put her part on a credit card. Our waitress came back and said, I quote "" Your tip should be $26.16, it appears that you are only leaving $20. You need $6.12 more."" I was appalled. We were leaving $20 on purpose because the service was slow and not helpful. I would not recommend this resturant more

Excellent authentic Japanese cuisine 3/25/2003

Kikugawa is the best place to have authentic Japanese cuisine. Everything is absolutely delicious, from the fresh sushi to the very appetizing entrees offered in the menu. Service is top-rated. My server was very friendly and informative on answering my questions regarding the menu. I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone that enjoys good Japanese food. I've tried almost every Japanese restaurant in Minnesota, yet Kikugawa is the place to go for authentic delicious Japanese cuisine. Pros: excellent food, terrific service more

For first time sushi eaters 1/30/2003

Great lunch menu. Welcoming atmosphere and beautiful decor. The sushi sampler was great and convinced non-sushi eaters to pick up the habit. The staff was very good at recommending dishes. I recommend the Tako Su (Octopus with cucumber and vinegar) for an appetizer. Pros: ambiance, lunch menu value, sushi guide at table Cons: no soda refills more

Kickyououtta 1/14/2003

I used to frequent Kikugawa from late '92 up until Fall of 2000. The food was consistenly good, but the waitstaff became indifferent and rude over time to the point of effete snobbism. I felt unwelcome and more a hinderance to their otherwise boring existence. I doubt I'll ever return for another dose of mannerless ass-whoopin' from the many Geisha'd out gals who think the sun rises and sets on their fat fans. Pros: Good sashimi & sushi, Excellent views, Hot Saki! Cons: Bad-mannered staff, Pricey, Never enough gari more

Serenity 1/11/2003

My husband and I had a fantastic lunch at Kikugawa today. The food was excellent, including very fresh and generous servings of salmon, yellowfish, and red snapper sushi. The manager, the server, and the sushi chef were all very friendly and helpful. We've been eating at Kikugawa for years and we love the calm and serene atmosphere. Pros: Quality, Service, Atmosphere more
