Innovative and cozy 4/10/2010

Jack's specialty is sous-vide and these dishes occupy a lot though not all of their menu which does change frequently. The food, sous-vide or otherwise, is consistently good with occasional bouts with really brilliant flavor combination's. Definitely a regular on our dinner route. Pros: Good food, changing menu, service Cons: Small more

Inventive, adventurous Food that ROCKS! 2/3/2009

The atmosphere is half local bar and half artsy restaurant. Mixed drinks are fun like chai bubble tea, huckleberry lemondade and spa martini. Menu is inventive and frisky. I've been there numerous times and will keep coming back. The smore dessert is legendary. My sister adores this scandenavian hotdog mosh, which looks scary but she loves it. I've had pork chops, veg bento box, seared tuna with poprocks (CLASSIC!), chocolate mac & cheese (AMAZING), purple curry muscles and more. We've done entrees and we've done appetizers for the whole meal. You need an adventurous spirit of a true gourmand to enjoy this inventive menu. not for wimps! My sister and I have agreed that we will screen our dates by this restaurant, it they get it, we keep em. service is very nice too. keep coming back for more especially with the changing, evolving menu. keep us guessing, chef! we love it! Pros: Food, service, ambience more

“The most innovative restaurant in Baltimore” 1/21/2009

We visited Jack's Bistro tonight on the recommendation of a local. We were greeted with smiles, and although they were very busy, our many questions about the very eclectic menu were answered patiently by a charismatic and informative waiter who was as eager to serve the food as we were to try it! We had a perfect version of steak tartare, and a slider which was a pure bacon patty! The prices are a steal, especially for the standout sous vide dishes. Try the duck duo or the sous vide fish dishes. The desserts are homemade, and the citris sabayon is accompanied with fresh basil syrup that they actually grown in a garden on the roof of the building. Warning: the places is small and reminded us of our favorite Manhattan restaurants, but we can't wait to tell all our friends when we get home, about Jack's Bistro. Quite a gem on a quiet little street in Baltimore. more

Interesting concoctions, subpar tastes 1/1/2008

I went to Jack's once about two months ago. The food was very inventive, but the quality of most dishes was subpar. The appetizer four-cheese pretzels were vastly undercooked and tasted like they had cheese whiz on them. Only about half of what was on each entree plate was edible. The fish was too salty. Some of the veges (potatoes, etc.) were actually very good. I had some simply prepared exotic pear something-or-other for the first time that I quite enjoyed. (My apologies for not being able to be more specific--it was a long time ago.) My entree sauce was made especially for me, and they did a marvelous job with it. I think it might have been so good because it was simple. The chefs had great ideas with all sorts of things, but they kind of went overboard, adding one too many ingredients or some such that just made the dishes not work. My date and I had a great time trying to figure everything out, though--especially his ""snapping sauce.."" The mixed drinks were very good--I had some lemonade concoction recommended by our somewhat absent minded but pleasant server who was in a hurry to hustle us out at the end of the night. My date's wine was average. The rather cheap decorations (really, there is no other word for them) were again, interesting conversation pieces. All in all, we had a great time, but left about half our food on our plates, and not because for lack of appetite. For the bill, I thought that was a shame. As long as you're taking someone who can laugh, then go ahead--especially if you're going to have mixed drinks. If you're taking someone who has a discerning palate and is somewhat hungry, this might not be the best choice. Pros: good mixed drinks, different, fun if you can work it that way Cons: food quality isn't really there, especially not for the price more
