Interesting concoctions, subpar tastes 1/1/2008

I went to Jack's once about two months ago. The food was very inventive, but the quality of most dishes was subpar. The appetizer four-cheese pretzels were vastly undercooked and tasted like they had cheese whiz on them. Only about half of what was on each entree plate was edible. The fish was too salty. Some of the veges (potatoes, etc.) were actually very good. I had some simply prepared exotic pear something-or-other for the first time that I quite enjoyed. (My apologies for not being able to be more specific--it was a long time ago.) My entree sauce was made especially for me, and they did a marvelous job with it. I think it might have been so good because it was simple. The chefs had great ideas with all sorts of things, but they kind of went overboard, adding one too many ingredients or some such that just made the dishes not work. My date and I had a great time trying to figure everything out, though--especially his ""snapping sauce.."" The mixed drinks were very good--I had some lemonade concoction recommended by our somewhat absent minded but pleasant server who was in a hurry to hustle us out at the end of the night. My date's wine was average. The rather cheap decorations (really, there is no other word for them) were again, interesting conversation pieces. All in all, we had a great time, but left about half our food on our plates, and not because for lack of appetite. For the bill, I thought that was a shame. As long as you're taking someone who can laugh, then go ahead--especially if you're going to have mixed drinks. If you're taking someone who has a discerning palate and is somewhat hungry, this might not be the best choice. Pros: good mixed drinks, different, fun if you can work it that way Cons: food quality isn't really there, especially not for the price more
