A Children's Museum with limited appeal

When Port Discovery opened several years ago, I was quite excited--finally something in Baltimore geared towards children that was more culturally appealing than Six Flags. Unfortunately, Port Discovery hasn't lived up to its promise.
The times that I have been have been plagued with problems--exhibits are not kept up well, have pieces falling apart or missing, and are even dirty, as if the facility isn't kept properly clean. There is very little there for young children--one small room designed for preschoolers that isn't much more interesting than the children's section of Barnes and Noble. For elementary school children, it's a bit better--the exhibits are geared towards this age range, but again, because of quality control problems, kids don't seem to get much out of it.
And it's expensive. I don't mind the $8.50 admission for children so much, but charging $11.00 for adults is crazy--there's nothing there for them! Port Discovery would do better to charge less for adults to encourage them to come and bring their kids. Frankly, if I want something fun and appealing for the family, I'll take them to the Science Center or the National Aquarium.

For Baltimoreans proud of their cinematic history (native son John Waters, the many movies still filmed here), Charles Theater is a must see. It maintains its original atmosphere and transforms moviegoing into a much more dignified and weighty experience. The Charles alternates between first-run movies and classics, and both are made more enjoyable by the unique venue.

This is the location of Babe Ruth's birth-- it is only a few blocks away from Camden Yards, which is a baseball destination in its own right. But here you will find the restored house as well as a museum. The museum is focused on situating Babe Ruth in a history of the Orioles baseball team. Highlights include Ruth memorobilia such as his hat, glove, and bat. You probably can't spend a day there, but why not catch it as part of a baseball day?

So I had not been to the B & O Railroad Museum since I was in middle school many years ago until just a few weeks ago. I remember the museum was very well put togeather, informative and fun. Since the massive flood they renovated the whole museum and it is even better than it was before. The can not miss part of the B & O Railroad Museum is thier amazing display of real trains. This is a great visit for an amature engineer or young children to light the fire of engineering and thier love and fascination of trains!

If you've ever watched the Preakness, you saw parts of Pimlico race track. Every year it is held there mid May and the 'big thing' in Baltimore besides football and baseball. Personally,I can't believe they have it when the palce is such a mess, but so be it. It was bought by a new owner and they promised big renovations,so I'm hopeful. But if you like horse racing in MD,this is the place to be.

Mt Pleasant Ice Arena has a nice rink and a good location, but it seems to be run mostly for the hockey teams and competitive skaters who train there. If you are going just to free skate for fun, you'll run into obstacles in the form of friendly and well-meaning but inefficient staff who don't seem to know how to process outsiders. Still, it's fun and not too pricey, so it's a good occasional outing.

Cylburn Arboretum is right off I-83 but feels miles removed from the city hustle and bustle. It is well-maintained and centers around the gorgeous Cylburn Mansion, which is frequently open for tours. Go during nice weather so you can enjoy walking the grounds. It is a wonderful day trip with kids.

Situated on the edge of the Inner Harbor, the Maryland Science Center is a big hit with tourists. In general, I found the exhibits very up to date and educationally oriented. It is perfect for school age children, and even adults, especially if you are someone who likes planetariums and IMAX films. The observatory is pretty cool too and the staff are excited to share their enthusiasm with visitors. The museum is open throughout the week and there are even extended hours in the summer. As I mentioned, the location is very convenient to other tourists destinatons along the harbor and closeby, such as the American Visionary Art Museum.

More
The Baltimore Museum of Art has a large variety of art displays. There is a whole section devoted to Native American art and artifacts, a collection of traditional American furniture, and displays of silver and metal crafts. There are also several galleries of classical art and paintings, the works you expect to see in an art museum. There’s usually coupons for buy 1 get 1 free entrances in the Baltimore Entertainment Book.
