Amazing! 12/23/2010

I am always surprised at the difference of opinions regarding restaraunts. J Alexanders has been a favorite of mine for a while. I have always experienced impeccable service and the food has always been of great quality. Ambience is one of a relaxing nature. I will be back many, many times. more

Definitely not your mom's mac and cheese! 2/2/2010

We've been here several times and with one exception, I always leave happy! The steaks are juicy, the ""not so ordinary"" macaroni and cheese is OUT OF THIS WORLD! The lighting and interior is very condusive(sp) to an intimate evening environment. Worth the waitlist.\r Pros: romantic atmosphere, juicy steaks, and great drinks Cons: Cons-service isn't ALWAYS consistent more

Overpriced & Limited 9/7/2008

We dined on a Wed late evening, restaurant was half full at the time with a party of at least 6 adults & 4 kids that took up any free standing tables. Of course we got stuck w/a booth (hate that) which comprises most of the restaurants seating. Make that a dark 'n dank booth. Due to the limited offerings under $15 my date ended up drinking her dinner. I ordered the fresh cut fish sandwich for an overpriced $15, wait, it did come w/fries although its the shoestring variety that reminds me of the ""pik nik"" pop open cans from way back. The server informed me of the fish selection, it would be salmon or flounder. Well who wants a salmon sandwich? When my flounder sandwich arrived open faced it was about a 4oz piece on a 6oz bun, very small, barely fried & not fresh tasting. The server did offer to replace it w/something else but we just wanted out of this disappointing restaurant. Never again! Pros: open late Cons: quality of food more

EWW 5/14/2007

We just tried j alexanders for the first time tonight- because a few friends had reccomended it and we will not be returning! My hubby ordered the maui steak a marinated steak and asked for medium and it was WELL-actually way well done..i got the rotisserie cobb salad and the avacado was black in spots, the chicken tasted old, the salad was a little wilted, it was just disgusting. Totally over priced for the quality of the food. Portions are large but i prefer quality over quantity!! Pros: Lovely decor Cons: food!!!! more

Must Try Croissants! Hearty Meal! 9/3/2006

I am a frequent diner of J. Alexanders, and their Croissants are just to die for! Just ask for a basket(3pcs) if you didn't see it on menu. I do agree of previous review of it might not be the best place to bring infants or young child to, however i did sat w/some well behave toddlers during a sunny afternoon in their patio. guess it just denpends on how good your child behave.\r Given it's atomsphere and hearty portion of food, the price is pretty reasonable. Although i did got an uncooked salmon once, the manager certainly took good care of it...unlike other famous chain store...read my other reiviews if you r interest.\r Over all I do encourage you to pay them a visit when you have a chance to hang around The Quarry.\r Pros: To Die for Croissants! more

Great Food, Great Martini's, Mashed Potatos by the Truckload 8/28/2006

This place hits on all of the Big 3: Steaks, Salads and Seafood. They grill very well at this place and the menu is different from most of the usual restaurant suspects. Be warned though, the individual servings of mashed potatos are what the rest of the world regards as a Family Style Portion. This is a place where you absolutely do order the before dinner Martini and you absolutely do not order chicken fingers. It's also an elegant setting with good service. Pros: The Place is cool, Food is Great more

GOOD PRIME RIBS...... 8/8/2006

MY CHILDREN AND I LOVE IT. ALSO, A VERY ROMANTIC PLACE FOR DINNER. I GIVE OUT J. ALEXANDER'S GIFTS CERTIFCIATES AS GIFTS TO MY MARRIED FRIEND. more

Best food, Just OK Service 12/4/2005

Just as the Title says, the food at J. Alexander's is the absolute best in town. No other restaurant in San Antonio can compare. As far as the service goes, it is hit or miss with their service staff. I have had outstanding service, and I have had service there that makes me wonder how they can ever stay in buisness. Overall it is a nice restaurant. It's the kind of restaurant that I would take a date or a buisness client to. Pros: great steaks, big portions Cons: service, general manager, no reservations more

Too small portions 7/14/2005

Overpriced, over $13.00 for a small piece of Red fish and mashed potatoes. Nothing else comes with the small meal. No salad, no anything else. We will not be returning. Pros: Good Service, Prompt seating. Cons: Over priced, small portions more

Great restaurant isn't for everyone.... 6/6/2005

This is a great restaurant to take a client for lunch or to take your date for dinner. I read the other reviews and it sounds like they haven't been there much. Being a regular diner, I can tell you that the majority of the tables are booths that seat 4 or less which probably explains why that one gentlemen had trouble getting a table. For the most part I've found that San Antonio diners aren't the most sophisticated lot (see rankings/recs). This restaurant isn't for children or large groups of people. It isn't that kind of place. The food is great and you get alot of it (be ready for a to-go box). The Maui and the Smoke Salmon are winners along with the carrot cake. Great wine list. Pros: Food, Ambiance, Wine list Cons: Outdoor dining, Small bathrooms more

Eight was too many! 5/10/2005

We attempted to take a party of 8 to this restaraunt. Although it was early and they were nearly empty, we were turned away and told that they could not accomodate a party that large. There was no attempt to seat us at adjoining tables, even through there were many available. more

Multiple visits, Mixed Feelings 6/8/2003

I have eaten at this restaurant on several occasions, and as the title of this review states . . . my feeligns are mixed about this place. The first time I had eaten here the service was on the mark . . . present but not stifling and there before they were just about needed. However, more recent visits have deminished my opinion of the service staff. They are no where to be found, they deliver food much to soon rushing their dining guest towards exiting, and your beverages end up depleted leaving your mouth dry. But regardless of this the ambience of the lighting and the food are top notch. But be careful of which server serves you. Pros: Smoked Salmon Dip, Overall Food Quality, Location Cons: Service Staff, Mid-40 Y.O. Feeling more

Dark and lovely 8/5/2002

I love eating at J. Alexander's. As for as romantic ambiance... this place is tip top. They always keep the lights down low, but you can still see your food (and your guest). :) The wait staff is always friendly, but the don't hang around as if they've got nothing else to do. The menu is simply delightful. Italian inspired dishes. But, you won't see spaghetti on the list. I think their pasta of choice is ozo? (Forgive me if I spelled that wrong.) Not as loud as Carrabas or Macaroni's. Pros: location, ambiance, immediately seated Cons: need more locations more
