I love this salon. I think the world of Janine and her ability as a colorist and a stylist. I could make a day of being in this salon. Everyone is very friendly and fun. Glenn knows what he is doing and what he does he does very well. I started going to Headlights in October, 2008 and have been going back there ever since. To me Glenn is much more than a stylist because he intuitively can ""create"" the right style by just looking at you. Online scheduling is very convenient. I found Headlights in CitySearch and starting going to Joseph last year. He is totally amazing and an artist with hair. I had some overly highlighted damaged hair when I started going to him -- he took hours to fix it and I could not believe the difference. I've let him go darker with my hair, which I never thought I'd do, but he is such a master with highlights that it looks so much better than before. Go to him and trust his advice - he will make sure that you look beautiful! more

I heard about Headlights from the reviews on this site. I've been a customer there ever since. Joseph is excellent with my hair. First we worked on the color that I wanted. We tried a few different shades and then found the combination that was just the right blend for me. I like the fact that it's my own special mix. Joseph also does a great job in cutting hair. I started going to Headlights because my previous stylist felt that my hair was his playground. I would never know what I'd look like after my old stylist worked on my hair. I like that I can discuss what I want with Joseph and he transforms my hair into MY idea of what it should look like. I have gotten so many compliments on my hair since I started going to Joseph. It's a great bonus that you can schedule your appointment online. Sometimes I think about making an appointment in the middle of the night. Instead of having to wait until the studio is open, I just log in, see the available times and make the appointment. Sooo easy. After years of downtown salons I finally ventured all the way to Hayes, out of the way for me, but well worth the trip each month. Glenn is finally getting my dark brown hair to a wonderful blend of various light and dark browns, which make the sad white roots much less noticable. He is the first stylist whom I totally trust with my hair! I always judge a colourist by how well he does blondes, which I think is very hard. Often when I arrive for my appointment I get to witness a blonde walking out looking fab with hair colour that has life and sheen. Blonde and white hair are two challenges Glenn has mastered. As everyone else I too have been looking for a good hair stylist for years and as I told Richard ""Hair makes or breaks you."" My last stylist left my hair so bleached that not only did it look like I had gray hairs (which made me look older then what I really am) but my hair would break as she dried it too! Thank God for Richard he saved my hair and knew just what I was looking for. My hair was left so healthy, smooth and shiny that its still like that day's later! All of Richards schooling definitely paid off, this guy knows his stuff!! And the place is so friendly, the atmosphere was delightful and I never had such a blast at a hair salon before. I'm from the Napa Valley so let me be the first to tell you that the drive to SF is so worth it. Richard knew just what I was looking for and made my hair look so natural. I found Joseph from Headlights Hair Studio myself on city search. Whatever was said in the reviews - they were all accurate. Joseph saved my hair from the hairdressers before that only did what they wanted to do even when I said what I wanted. They didn't listen to me - and they were some of the best in the city - just as Joseph is. Joseph really listened and has given me exactly what I wanted now for 6 months and I love my hair every time. Whether it's just a cut or highlights. Joseph has been at some of the best salon's in the city and has now found his home and so have I! He is by far the best I've ever had and I'm not leaving. The studio itself is small with just 3 hairdressers and is a warm and inviting atmosphere and is not pretentious as some salons are. It's the best secret in town. I have never ever written a bad review. I was in S.F. over the weekend and found this salon through City Search. I found the prices were reasonable. The saying ""you get what you pay for"" is totally true. Let's start with the fact that I got there and I had to wait 15 minutes. I went in for a simple wash and dry.. And, I will not mention the name of the stylist because he was a nice person. BUT, he smothered my hair with product and some sort of spray WELL i had possibly the worst hair dry I've ever had in my life. I went back to my hotel room and washed my hair. My hair was stiff, frizzy and it felt like hay. I couldn't run my fingers through my hair. I have very fine hair so I don't need all the products. I called the salon that evening and left a message for the stylist and of course he never called me back. Where is the customer service? Not even a call to acknowlwedge the mess. I had been going to a stylist for years who wasn't doing anything creative with my style or color and I knew I needed a change. Headlights was recommended by a friend...Glenn has been cutting his hair for over 20 years. I made my first appointment with Richard...his expertise was working with long hair (mine was VERY long and badly in need of a cut) and highlights. Richard spent lots of time discussing what to do. I had an idea of what I wanted, but decided to give Richard free rein. As it turned out, he did exactly what I was looking for. He gave me the best cut I've ever had, and a fairly drastic color change that I felt comfortable with as soon as I saw it. Lots of compliments have followed. After foolishly bleaching my own hair, not liking it, and then dyeing over it with what i thought would turn out to be a light brown color, my hair turned golden-orange. It looked disgusting. The next morning I called Joseph at Headlights (my roommate had recommended him), and he fit me in that day! Joseph was wonderful, incredibly professional, he didn't make me feel like an idiot for my mistake, and most importantly, my hair is now back to a natural-looking blonde. This was the second time I have been to this salon, the first time I was very satisfied. However, I recently went in for summer highlights and came out with orange roots with white spots. I told the stylist that summer is here, and I wanted highlights! Instead, he insisted on doing all over color and lightened my roots. Then he put a dark toner on it, which made everything worse. He said he did it that way to save money and time. I would pay $500 to not have orange roots and probably will have to pay that for someone to fix it. As far as time goes, if he didn't have enough time to do the correct job, he should've canceled our appointment. I would've been WAY more happier to reschedule my appointment than to look like I do. I have been crying for two days and have not left the house! I am an attorney and start a new job on Monday, and I am forced to go to court with orange hair. I am so embarassed to face the judge and defense counsel looking like this. I do not look professional, I look like I tried to color my own hair. This is the worst my hair has ever looked, and I have had many, many bad color jobs. Hopefully, I can get it fixed before I have a mental breakdown. more

I love this salon! I recently moved to SF and had to rely on word of mouth to find a good salon. And this is a huge city, so you're taking a huge risk anywhere you go. But there is no risk involved with Headlights Hair Studio. Joseph, my stylist, was a great listener and very professional. In the first 5 minutes of talking to him I felt a sense of trust and knew that I would return. After a very-life altering and emotionally scarring hair cut and color from a Union Street salon that left me feeling unattractive and boring, Joseph was able to fix the problem with a great highlite. He was also able to turn my jagged cut into a soft A-line that made a huge difference in how I look. I really appreciated his assistant getting me water or snacks and the hair dryer has a nice massage chair. I can't explain how happy I am to have finally found a permanent stylist. I got my color and cut done with Joseph, he is so talented!! My hair looked bad due to previous stylist's mess-ups, and he did an amazing job! I love my hair, and trust me, I am a perfectionist and my most chritical judge, and i love it!! :) I finally found a salon to call my own!!! I went to one of the other ""trendy"" places in the city with hair that came midway down my back. My hair was a natural red, and looked fine. When I walked out of that ""trendy"" place, my hair was purple with grey/white streaks that were uneven and just UGLY! He cut my hair so short and round that my head looked like a purple basketball. I was in hair hell! The next day, I made an appointment with Headlights. When I walked in, I think Joseph could tell that I was about to cry. So he sat me down in his chair and contemplated how to fix my problem. He discussed it with his colleagues, and after about 30 mins of deliberation, he had come up with a solution. During the next 4 hours, he pulled out EVERY single purple strand of hair and bleached it. Then he toned down the grey/blonde streaks. Then he fixed my cut, so that my face was now elongated and actually had a style to it! When I walked out, my hair was a beautiful (and natural) strawberry blonde color and wasn't damaged! I can't imagine how he was able to fix my hair without me walking out with chunks of it in my hands, but Joseph is a genius! I was so impressed that he spent 4 hours on getting it perfect that I am telling all of my friends about him. I will never go any place ever again. more

I've gone to Richard at Headlights twice now, and I will never go anywhere else! He is by far the best stylist, and this is the best hair studio I've been to. The atmosphere is relaxing, comfortable, and fun. I have a great time every time I go, and walk out of there feeling like a supermodel. Richard has given me the best and funkiest hairstyle I've had, and he's a genius with color and creativity. I have been to many salons in the Bay Area and Joseph is by far the best colorist I have been to. He REALLY listened to what I wanted and I felt completely comfortable with the recommendations that he made. I continue to be amazed at how many compliments I get on my hair!
