Ask for someone other than Nathan... I feel bad writing this because he seemed like a nice enough guy, but after getting my hair cut there for a long time off and on by Joy and Alex and always loving the result, I'm off to find a new salon because my trust has been so broken by my experience there. He talked about how he was looking for a new job (didn't want to be a stylist anymore) and barely seemed interested in the cut. After a brief initial conversation which was me saying ""basically I want about 4 inches cut off, some long blended layers, and I need the bulk thinned out"" to which he awkwardly replied ""okay..."" he never asked me about my cut at all. I kept waiting for him to ask for guidance or tell me what he was doing but he just went to town. I'm not a stylist, I don't know all the lingo. I've never had a problem getting other stylists to communicate though, so I didn't know what to do or say! He took forever to trim the ends BLUNTLY and abruptly took the cape off and said ""What do you think?!"" What I really thought was ""What? You're done?"" because all he did was whack off a few inches and add in some extremely uneven and blunt layers. The bulk wasn't removed at all. Here's the kicker: He didn't even touch my bangs which were CLEARLY a mess. I made a confused face and touched my bangs, embarrassed that I even had to ask ""Umm... could you..."" And he acted totally surprised and put out that I wanted my bangs cut. After taking literally 2 minutes to trim them a little after I expressed I wanted them CUT, I felt the rest of my hair and decided I just wanted to leave. This is the first time I've had a haircut and people mostly pretended not to notice or tell me ""oh, it's okaaaay, it's not that bad."" I paid $50 including tip to have to break down and cut my own bangs. I did a better job. more

Nathan was amazing, Wish I could put more stars 3/11/2011

Alright, so I'm 17 and I haven't ever trusted other people to cut my hair. Every time I did so my hair turned out something completely different from what I wanted, one time it was so bad that the manager apologized to me when she saw it. So totally frustrated I started cutting my own hair and I was happy doing that for the past few years. I mean come on, no one really cares what you look like when your 15, you can get away with murder. But recently I decided it was time to grow up and I took the plunge. The salon itself was a really comfortable to me, I got Nathan and he totally restored my faith in hairdresser, seriously incredible. He listened carefully to what I wanted, gave suggestions, and gave me EXACTLY what I wanted. Even better actually, the way he styled it was perfect. On top of that I had a great time talking to him. Next time I'm in oregon I'm making it a point to go see him. more

Terrible color!! 3/5/2011

I had medium brown hair that I wanted to lighten to light brown. Based on all the good reviews I decided to try Grace Salon. My appointment was set with Nathan, and I brought a picture of myself at about age 10 to show him the color I wanted. Nathan was very nice, but appeared to be quite inexperienced. I stressed two things: 1) I don't care what needs to be done to achieve the lighter shade - do whatever it takes; and, 2) I don't want the ends of my hair darker than my roots. After about 3 hours, I walked out of the salon with dark brown hair with a few funky colored highlights. That evening I emailed the salon stating my dissatisfaction with my color. Trish contacted me the following day. After playing phone tag (no fault of the salon) I spoke with Trish, who was very nice and seemed quite knowledgeable. After speaking with her, we both agreed that I should come back to correct the color. I came in about one week later, and once again Nathan was my colorist, although this time Trish was there to guide him somewhat. He applied a bleach shampoo mixture and after the rinse, my hair did appear slightly lighter (although no where near the light brown I had initially requested). They decided that a toner should be applied, but Trish stressed that the toner should not be applied to the ends for any length of time as the ends will get too dark. I also reiterated that I don't want ends that are darker than the roots. After rinsing, it appeared that my hair was once again dark, but I thought maybe it was just because it was wet (prior to the toner, Nathan dried sections of my hair so that we could see the color). Nathan diffused my hair slightly, but it was still quite wet when I left the salon. Well, once my hair dried completely, the color looked horrible. It is now medium brown at the roots, and the rest of my hair is a dark redwood color all the way down to the ends, which are the darkest. And the few highlights initially applied now run from the crown for about 3 inches and then disappear into the dark brown/red color, so that I now have highlights only at the crown. Very weird. Most of the time I color my own hair, but because I wanted to go lighter, I thought I would leave it to the ""experts."" Well it just didn't happen at this salon. more

Worst haircut ever! 7/19/2010

After searching for a good salon, I decided to try Grace salon! BAD idea! I went there to see Megan, I have nice curls and Megan said I think we should keep the curl and give you a haircut not too short! While she was cutting my hair, she kept saying that I have too much hair! After cutting my hair for one and half hour, and not even styling my hair cause it was sooooo bad! She said I think I should give you a short short haircut! come back tomorrow and I will cut your hair short short! then I asked why??? what happened to my cute curls? She said, I think you will look better with short short hair!!! UHHH I was so mad! I left and called back to talk to the owner! He never called me back and the manager said I have to go back to see Megan to fix my hair! she said it is their STUPID policy to go back to the same person who gave you a bad haircut to FIX it! RIGHT!!! And I said, no way! I want my money back and I would never ever come back here!! Pros: Nice place Cons: not experienced at all! more

New review- down from 4-stars 7/12/2010

I originally gave Grace 4 stars because of the stylist I had for 3 years prior to her being let go. She was awesome and I recommended all of my friends to her. It seemed there was nothing she couldn't do: straight, curly, thick, fine... So after trying some other places (who give equally good haircuts at comparable prices), I returned to Grace. I love Valerie (at the front desk) and the location is easy to get to. Oh, Nathan. I told you that my only two concerns were that I looked professional and that my cowlick was manageable. Well, now I have a haircut that actually showcases the usually hide-able flip in my hair. No, really. My profile now looks like a box that got stepped on and stretched out on one side. The upside? He cuts in a straight line. No layering what-so-ever with side ""bangs"" that are just that. Two inches of hair cut straight across my cheek with a 3-inch drop to the rest of my hair. This is the first time when people have said ""Oh, you got a haircut..."" and didn't know what to say after that. I know I'm probably going to get some sort of comment from the owner, but I'm disappointed with my recent experience and am pining for past staffers. Pros: Great staff, easy parking, super amenities Cons: Lost two favorite stylists to turnover more

Not as good as reviewed 2/22/2010

Being new in town, I figured the best way to find a new hairstylist was to check out reviews. After going here for a couple months, my previously easy to maintain hair cut slowly got worse and worse, until finally, I gave up and went elsewhere (where thankfully, they were able to right all the wrongs fairly easily). So I'm not sure the reviews in here are ""real"" reviews. Pros: nice folks, prompt Cons: haircuts are not very good, products dried out my hair more

THE best hair salon in Portland! 12/30/2009

Just had my first haircut and highlight at Grace Salon with Trish- every great review I read was absolutely correct: She took time to look at my hair, talk about my routines, how much upkeep I could do, etc. No rushing, no suggesting things that were off base from what I was going for. I had brought pictures of what I wanted (and didn't want) and she really nailed it. The salon itself is pleasant and filled with natural light, 3 hour parking was right around the corner-totally easy. Truly the best hair experience I've had in years and years- they have a loyal new client! Thanks Trish! Pros: Trish, Perfect haircut, gorgeous color! Cons: teeny bit pricey...but worth it! more

Curly Hair Miracles 12/11/2009

Trish Warren has been cutting my hair for many years. Her curly hair skills came highly recommended, and I have always left my appointments with her wowed and reinvigorated. She listens well and works with you to achieve the cut you're leaning towards--though if you're wavering, she's also the rare sort of stylist you can say ""just do something great!"" and trust that you'll be thoroughly beautified when she's through. I lived out of the country for a few years recently and missed her cuts! Glad to be back! Pros: Attentive, Creative, Gifted with Curly Heads more

Finally a good hair experience! 9/20/2009

I had two previous hair disasters and was quite on edge about letting anyone near my hair again. But I found Lauren at Grace salon and couldn't be more excited! She listened to my concerns and answered any questions I had. I was shown color swatches which is always nice. She then took my dry lack luster blonde hair to a beautiful shiny brown and the cut was amazing too, I love it! Thank you Lauren for bringing my hair back to life! Pros: Nice, welcoming, listened to my concerns Cons: Nada more

Lovely 3/30/2009

Megan listened to my hair needs and even heard my confessions (yes, I cut my own bangs!) without judgement. She even gave me great style tips to take home. Pros: great cut and really good service at an affordable price! Cons: What are the drawbacks? more

great cut and color!...confessions of an at-home-boxed-color user... 12/29/2008

lauren was not scared when i told her that the last time i colored my brown-black hair, i did it myself for $8.00! she calmly listened to my concerns and desires as i requested to add light brown highlights. i was shown color swatches (which i appreciated) and then lauren double checked her color concoction with boss/owner, thad grace (which was also appreciated). the color turned out great, and my cut was even more fantastic! what i loved most about my experience with lauren was her ability to listen, ask questions, and her genuine concern for the end result. I have dealt with my fair share of cocky and under-skilled stylists. i can honestly report that grace salon provides skilled results without any attitude. the front desk staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was inviting. more

Awesome.. Open.. Modern.. Industrial Feel 11/12/2008

Portland is lucky to have this Eastern Oregon graduate, Thad Grace, he is an expert in hair cutting and styling as well as having a highly trained staff. I would recommend that you plan 30-40 minutes to spend in relaxation in this enjoyable atmosphere. Please call ahead and make an appoitment to assure you recieve the proffesional staff member of your choice. Pros: Relaxing Atmosphere with an Industrial feel Cons: A little more costly than the average super cuts more

I like! 7/25/2008

Very professional, but not intimidating. The staff are friendly. I feel confident seeing any of the stylists who are available at the time I can come in. They are all good! I am growing out my hair (after a terrible experience somewhere else) and they have helped me through the nearly year-and-half process. I am very happy with the results. I am trying to be good and book every 6 weeks, otherwise, I can be tempted to cut my own hair. After I had the bad haircut, I was like hey! I could do a better job, snip snip! The staff have been very tactful and kind about correcting my mistakes! The owner, is always there (although, I've never had my hair cut by him) and he seems to be an encouraging presence to the other stylists. I usually book when I can take the afternoon, because I've had experiences at almost every salon (and doctor's office) I've ever gone to where I had to wait and wait, sometimes an hour (at London Influence, for instance), but the wait has always been reasonable here. If I come v. early, they have gotten me in 15 minutes early. The latest they've run is 25 minutes. I plan for that, because that how it generally goes at any busy salon. On sunny weekends, my husband and kids play in the water at Jamison Square (which is a block away) while waiting for me. We always enjoy that! Pros: Well trained staff, nice atmosphere, good prices. Cons: Parking in the Pearl, although I've always lucked out and found it nearby. more

Stylist was late 5/16/2008

Last fall, I made an appointment at Grace Hair Salon for the ONE free hour I had ALL MONTH. I just wanted a simple cut - no color, nothing fancy. Right before my appointment (which was my first ever with the salon), the salon called and said the stylist was ""running late"" and wanted me to come in late. I simply could not do that, so I had to cancel. The receptionist acted like I was the one who had ""inconvenienced"" them by not accepting the later time. I work long hours on most days, so I could not reschedule. Pros: Shining Reputation Cons: Poor Service - make clients feel guilty when they cannot reschedule due to late stylist more

Who's Your Dancer's hair stylist? 3/5/2008

Our artists are very much in the public eye, and spend a lot of time in front of a camera or at special events. We've got a lot of money riding on consistently projecting a certain visual image - so when the situation calls for someone who can take hair that spends 12 hours a day in a ballerina bun and transform it into something beautiful and glamorous, we want the best. That's why we always send our dancers to Grace. Pros: Extremely talented and able to work with all hair types more

Joy = FABULOUS! Service = AMAZING! 2/5/2008

I went to see Joy on 01.30.08 after reading numerous fabulous reviews, for a hair cut and color. Pros: Super friendly staff! Cons: None. more

GRACE is Great! 10/29/2007

My experience at Grace Salon has been fantastic! I go to Joy who has been the best hairdresser I've ever had for cuts and colors. In fact, I followed her to Grace from a salon near Lewis & Clark College. When you enter Grace Salon, it looks and feels industrial and cold. Bare bones decor. But, the people are professional and warm and did I say, Joy is the best! Wish they would add other services such as waxing and nails. Pros: Skill Cons: Interior decor is NOT warm and fuzzy more

Those weren't tears of Joy 10/2/2007

I used to see Aaron at Grace and he gave me great cuts. Now that Aaron is no longer there, I was recommended to see Joy who, because of her experience. I asked to keep length in the back but cut in a 'v' shape with layers. I ended up with a bob...a really boring bob...nothing like what I asked and several inches shorter. I haven't cried after a haircut since I was about 12 but I did today. Pros: nice location. Cons: got a crappy haircut that I'm stuck with until it grows out. more
