Best

(Asian Fusion): After all the years and hipster joints to go out of business, Five-Star is still the straight up shiz. I don't know how they've managed to do it year after year; ...

I'd have to say that the hipster atmosphere and delicious fusion of Asian dishes provides a nice setting for a fun group dinner. However, the service leaves much to be desired. At...

This place is awesome! 6/20/2003

Five Star is an awesome restaurant! I always have a good time there, and really enjoy the food. The 5Star General's Chicken and Heat Seeker Shrimp are my favorites. Good place to eat, chill and drink a Kirin. Oh, the 75cent fork thing? It's a joke, people!! Pros: good food, good dj's, not expensive Cons: parking is tough more

Good for afterwork drinks 6/16/2003

I enjoy going after work - around 6 or so - to get a few drinks and have a snack. The lounge area is so comfortable and the music is downtempo and discrete. Great place for a few friends to be able to unwind without thumping music, loads of people, and cheap beer. It s get hectic later in the evening, though. I used to like going for dinner but their menu is very Americanized and they lack true vegetarian options. Auto-gratuity for 5 or more people, and they DO NOT SPLIT CHECKS. Avoid later at night- cover charges as it turns into a hip-cop club. Pros: unique, low-key Cons: can get crowded, limited menu never changes, extra fees more

Fun, cute place! 5/23/2003

Great place to hang out, dance, eat, whatever! No, they are NOT serious about charging for a fork (I asked!) It's a hip, upbeat place and I love it. The scallion pancakes are really good, too. more

major bad attitude of staff 3/20/2003

My first visit and as I enter the host demonstrates major attitude. He thinks he's funny, but really insulting. It's mid-evening and we're of a party of 9, upon entering, for some unknown reason, the last 4 of my group are charged a cover charge...why? Dinner was still being served, it's not even 10:30 yet. The bar service was soooo slow...and to top it off, the drinks are served in a plastic cup. For an after dinner drink, I recommend The Rockford. Pros: atmosphere, music Cons: no parking, staff attitude, bad drinks more

The BEST!!! 3/13/2003

We LOVE this place. It is one of the few places in the area that is HIP looking with great food. We always bring local friends who haven't been there and friends visiting from out of town there. Everyone always thinks it the best. What other chinese restaurant gives you white meat chicken without having to ask and pay extra, and you know for sure it's chicken. THE BEST!!!! more

5 star? I don't think so... 2/19/2003

Five Star, rubbish star I give the food a ? star (if that). The food was terrible! I thought the menu sounded promising, uniquely traditional, but they just couldnt deliver the goods. For example, if you want to serve a Chinese eggplant dish, use real Chinese eggplant! Is that too logical? The only spice I could taste in the shrimp dish was sugar Hello, why bother calling it spicy garlic shrimp? Yes, SOME dishes should be served with a touch of sweetest, but why the overkill! Anyway, the duck was ok, nothing to brag about. I still think if you want duck, go to Red Palace, where you can appreciate the true flavors of a duck roll. As for the bar/dance club, its only good on Fridays Dont get me wrong, its a good concept (restaurant/bar with dance floor), but the restaurant part needs lots of work! Pros: atmosphere Cons: bad food, bad parking more

Beware the Eggplant!!! 2/10/2003

Whatever you do, don't get the eggplant! it's not the great chinese version, but a spongy mess that will turn your stomach. and follow what the last guy says, go here to hang out, not eat. the foods not worth it, but the bar is pretty cool afterhours (at least on hip hop night) Pros: atmosphere Cons: food more

to bad reviwers 1/20/2003

to all the bad reviewers out there: don't see five star as a restaurant. see it as a nice club/lunge that serves food. i never go to five star for its food menu. it's a relaxing place to hang out with your friends. the management is very friendly. if you just want good chinese food, then go to red palace, or furtune palace. five star attracts its own type of audience, just like other establishments(e.g. long branch for country folks, flying saucer for frat boys. pardon the stereotype). you will know if 5star is your scene or not the minute you step in. Pros: nice decor, friendly people, late hours more

Great fun and food 1/9/2003

This is a great resturant. All of the dishes are superb and very reasonable. The five-star general's chicken is outstanding. Learn to use chopsticks beforehand or pay extra for a fork. Pros: inexpensive, excellent food, fun environment more

Trendy and good food 1/2/2003

Five Star is a good place to go. It is very trendy and has really, really good food. Try the dumplings, chicken noodle bowl and heat seakers shrimp. This place has it all - bar, dancing, pool. One of the more trendy places in this area. I highly recommend it. more

Excellent!!! 11/21/2002

The food is excellent and there are always several vegetarian options as well as chicken, pork, and beef. The menu is small but I have taken over 20 people there over the years and everyone has commented that they loved their food. Great place for large groups of people or a date. The music is smooth r&b, jazz, hip-hop, and ambient. None of that awful hard techno crap. Hippest place in Raleigh without the pretention or big price tag. Pros: moderately priced, great music, excellent food Cons: late nights get busy more

Doesn't Live Up to the Name 11/16/2002

While this restaurant has an ultra-hip decor, the food falls short of any ""Five Star"" establishment: the menu was short and few, the food was over-priced considering the quality and most importantly..taste. The ""hot and sour soup"" might as have been called ""vinegar with tofu"" and the ""beef with broccoli"" reminded me of cardboard. Not to mention, these folks charge 75 cents per fork. more

haha, I thought I was the only one! 10/25/2002

after noticing the last 2 reviews about ""5 star"" I have to admit that I just jumped on the bandwagon. I remember some of my friends saying ""wow that place is so good! you gotta try out their dumplings and they kung pao chicken"". after trying it out I really didnt want to comment on the food (I figured I would rate the place on it's looks) but since we're on the topic of food, their dumplings and their kung pao chicken were not as ""great"" as I heard... who's cooking in the back anyways? thumbs down. Pros: I can dance there Cons: um....??? more

Chef needs cooking tips 10/23/2002

I wanted to like 5Star, but I agree with vermeer64. I'm not sure who is giving good reviews on the food, but the cuisine was pathetic. The ambience is great, and the service, however, the food was mediocre. The Won-Ton Soup was flavorless. They used small 'popcorn' shrimp for the shrimp dishes that were white in color. Tip: cook shrimp at a higher temperature to bring out a nice red color and use the jumbo, 8-12 count kind. The vegetables needed seasoning and the beef tasted like the samples you get when passing through the mall food court. Another tip: Chinese food is meant to be shared. Bring out empty plates for each patron and present the dishes on larger serving plates. That way, everyone gets to try several items. I'm glad I tried this establishment, and I will probably go back. But only for the nightlife at the bar. Pros: Ambience, Service, Nightlife Cons: Food more

Absolutely horrible 10/16/2002

.. I am not sure who is giving this place goodreviews but I hope that the knowledgeable and intelligent people who read these reviews are not swayed by the best of. Interesting enough in looking at the other Chinese restaurants on the list in the nation of which I have been fortunate to sample I do agree on Seattle's Shanghai Garden and Chicago's Phoenix as top notch. As for Five Star, it is simply another PF Chang wannabe and does not succeed. It is insulting to put it in the ranks with the other Chinese restaurants on the list and cannot be believed. In Raleigh, I believe the two three authentic Chinese restaurants are: 1. Crystal Palace: with its authentic and simply fantastic Peking Duck. 2. Fortune Garden: great home style Taiwanese cuisine. 3. Imperial Garden: truly well trained Chefs. Five Stars rating is extremely misleading. Not worthy Pros: none whatsoever Cons: worst service, overpriced food, unpalatable more

Rude, Crude, and Slow 10/8/2002

This place is poorly managed and service is horrible. I work part-time for a local hotel, and when I called to inquire about their restaurant, they told me they could not fax or send a menu, and did not wish to have refferals. I went to their restaurant to try out their service, and it lacked. The decor reminded of a late 18th centry brothel, and the people dressed about the same. I would not recommend anyone torture themselves by attempting to dine here. Pros: Interesting Decor, Live Music Cons: Bad Service, Rude Staff/Management more

Dig It... 10/2/2002

I met some friends and co-workers there for a party. I really dig this place. The pan-Asian food is delish. Caution: if you're looking for plain old Chinese food you can order from anywhere, then this place is not for you. It's not the food savvy people go for, it's the lounge loung. Small but tres cool. Considering the lack of lounge life in the Triangle this is a good place to just chill with friends and have a drink. Good DJ spinning and the bartenders were quite friendly and know how to make a good martini. Pros: Laid back, good atmosphere, yummy martinis Cons: Need more loung space more

Awful chinese food 9/27/2002

Stopped in one early evening and though atmosphere was interesting..... the food was not. Ordered noodle bowls which were awful and the service was atrocious. This place definitely does not belong in the top five of best chinese restaurants in the triangle. The menu was very limited and though the atmosphere attempts to be trendy it is merely a guise. more

Awesome nightlife 9/12/2002

The food is typical and a little pricey. The nite life is awesome....small but still have breathing room good DJ and bar service at night. Pros: Nightlife, Friendly staff Cons: expensive for guys more

Must be seeing double... 9/5/2002

I ordered some take-out and I was'nt happy when I opened up the bag...yuk! The Hot & Sour soup was kinda muddy with little flavor. The chicken was supposed to be Gen Tsao's. It looked like they forgot the sauce. I really think I could have done better at home with a William-Sanoma cookbook. I give 2.5 stars...and not to the chef ;~( Pros: cool building, cute staff Cons: quality control, semi-expensive more
