Best

Excellent for lunch with their $8.75 memphis pork sandwich!\r \r I've been eating here close to 15 years. It's a good value, the cole slaw is good, so go for that, not the potat...

Worst

What's more personal than barbecue? So, if someone says they love Nate's, that's fine with me. Live and let live. But, FOR ME, Nate's is quite weak. For ribs, I'd say Brothers...

BBQ Jealousy? 8/31/2005

I recommended for my company today and was a bit worried when I saw all the reviews. It's been a few years since I had big nates and I thought maybe something happened. I need not have been worried, by brisket was absolutely excellent, the hot sauce could be hotter but I'm a bit over the top on the spices. The meat was an excellent cut and melted in my mouth. Delivery time was about 30 minutes which was right on the nose. Ignore the negative reviews these must be from other bbq joints jealous of big nate's excellent fare. more

Best BBQ in SF!! 3/30/2005

The chicken falls off the bone, the pork is tender and chewy, the BBQ sauce is out of this world. And they deliver. I love Big Nate's! Pros: Sauce, Chicken, Pork more

Nasty 3/24/2005

How in the world do they call this BBQ? It tasted more like a Disney Land food court's poor attempt at mimicking BBQ. Tough, gristly meats swimming in overly sweet sauce. Atrocious. more

Excellent BBQ 3/6/2005

Nate's is my spot in the city for bbq. I recommend the 1/2 order of beef brisket (medium) with cole slaw. Tastes great and the perfect meal when I'm hungry. Simple establishment that is filled with great photos of Nate with Muhamad Ali, Joe Montana, Magic etc. Also, the aroma from all the cooking meats is great! more

Delivery sucks 8/29/2004

firstly, the girl i spoke to had never heard of haight street. the food took 90 minutes to arrive and was stone cold. i had to wait another 30 minutes to heat it all up. i do not recommend delivery service unless you live next door. more

this is bb-q??? 8/27/2004

Let's start with the worst ribs I've ever had!!! They were dry, tough & fatty - HELLO, not exactly what bb-q should be & I challenge anyone to try to get the corn muffin out of the paper in one piece - it will only crumble and fall to the floor. I vow to never have BB-Q anywhere other than MEMPHIS MINNIE'S - i must have been out of my mind to try another. Trust me when I tell you that I know what true BB-Q should be, living in the South has it's advantages & eating good BB-Q has spoiled me. Thank heavens for MEMPHIS MINNIE'S. Oh, and I ended up making a PB&J for dinner the night I ate at Big Fake's BB-Q more

Dry and chewy meats disappoint 8/23/2004

2nd visit update: ribs & brisket were somewhat moist, still not smokey. ribs likely parboiled - yech! Meat was cold, while sauce on side was warm. Will not return again. 1st visit: maybe I shouldn't have gone near closing time. No ribs available. The combo of brisket and Memphis pork was served dry and chewy. The sauce, which I asked for on the side, was tasty and zesty and helped me eat up the dry meat. Coleslaw with raisins and potato salad were both good side. Overall - doesn't even compare with Memphis Minnie's food. Pros: Tasty BBQ sauce, Visible smoke ring Cons: , "Wheat" white bread, Chopped brisket more

no fuss 5/17/2004

I liked this place. No fuss, just good bbq. I especially like the baked beans- not too sweet and nothing unusual floating around in it. The location was easy to find if you know what you're looking for. Lot's of food comes on the 2-combo! Couldn't even eat it all. So I recommend getting your order to go, so you can save some for later. It's also open on Mondays, when some of the other bbq joints are closed. more

WOW the BBQ 3/12/2004

Must say, Big nates IS the best I've had! Get the standard pork rib dinner with med or hot sauce and you'll remember it. I moved from SF to Chicago 4 years ago, and thought in a city like chicago I'd find great bbq. Thought wrong. I still go by big nates almost every time I'm back home in SF. BEST bbq sauce I've ever had. more

polite service crew 12/24/2003

i'd give a big plus to the service crew..they're very polite and helpful...good public relations..that's how all customer related businesses should be..very good example. more

Not that TASTY 8/11/2003

over rate and not that tasty boiling the meat loses the favor. Maybe a dry rub and apple wood could improve the tasty more

BAD BBQ 8/7/2003

Horrible BBQ. Small portions, overpriced. Stringy meats. Tasteless sauce. Not to mention the one time I went in there, Nate was there without so much as a Hello and thanks for coming to my place. DO NOT GO THERE. Cons: bad sauce, stringy meats, yucky sides more

The WORST BBQ EVER! 8/2/2003

OH MY GOD! Do they smoke the ribs over burning tires? It tasted like it. The potato salad was bland, the cole slaw tasteless. Try adding some seasoning guys. I can't imagine anyone liking this crap. I've had shoes that tasted better. My company bought a whole mess of this CRAP, and everyone wanted to know where it came from so they wouldn't ever make the mistake of going there. That was the opinion of 30 people. Big Nates ought to be called CLOSED. did I mention the uncooked out of the can beans? Pros: not one, nothing, nada Cons: taste like burnt tire, crappy neighborhood, overpriced more

Big Nate's Rocks 1/25/2003

It may not be the best BBQ in the Bay Area, but it's pretty damn good. Nice tasty sauce, good quality cuts of meat. Pork ribs are a bit fatty (what ribs aren't), but taste great, chicken and brisket are both very good. Plus, they deliver on weekends for ballgames, etc. Sides are weak, yeah, but that leaves more room for good BBQ! Relatively affordable as well. more

Not good at all... 11/15/2002

Read the other reviews and thought we would give it a try. Yuk. I lived in Texas and know BAR-B-Q (I am not FROM Texas, only lived there...so I am not one of ""those"" people). Everything is premade 100% so it is dry/gross. The only redeeming quality is the sauce...sorta. The sides are pretty lame and they give you (I dont know why) plain wheat bread with your order. Yuk. Throw in the corn bread for crying out loud. Then the service staff looks at you when you walk in like you are their first customer and nervous. (although if I worked in THAT neighborhood, I could be nervous too). Dont waste your time like we did...or if you try it, you will be like us and know not to go back. Yuk. Take it from someone who KNOWS good barbeque...it's bad, dry, and lame. Pros: sauce is ok Cons: dry precooked meat, bad taste, poor service more

Nate Should Stick to Basketball 10/28/2002

Found the food to be below average and the sauce too peppery. Sides were nothing special and service was OK. more

barbeque for someone else 10/19/2002

Inexpensive and filling, but not really what I consider a culinary experience. I'd rather have grilled meats, than layered-on sweet sauce. But then again, eveyone has a different opinion of what barbeque should be. Cons: too sweet more

bbq alright 10/2/2002

I love BBQ, this joint was so so, can someone direct me to the best BBQ in SF? I still eat at Nate's for there chicken. more

There are better choices 9/8/2002

What's more personal than barbecue? So, if someone says they love Nate's, that's fine with me. Live and let live. But, FOR ME, Nate's is quite weak. For ribs, I'd say Brothers-in-Law is better. For brisket or pork, Memphis Minnie's is much better. Can't speak to chicken or links. more

WOW 8/24/2002

I found Big Nate's on Waiters on wheels, now we order from here almmost every weekend. more
