Freshwater fish are ok here but the saltwater fish are usually very unhealthy. Staff is ok, but make sure you research before you go because most of the time it seems they would ...

Editorial review from Citysearch 2/17/2013

The staff at Aqua-Dome is highly intelligent, offer their recommendations to ensure a strong ecosystem and limit aggressiveness of the tank inhabitant. \r \r For beginners, take advantage of their knowledge and be patient when starting a salt water tank. They want you to be successful and ensure compatibility when making your purchases with corals and your selection of fish. \r \r We started our salt water tank going on two years now and have a learning success with Gary, Hunter and Teri. \r \r We would highly recommend Aqua Dome as their selection of all types of fish and corals is simply the best in Austin. more

Never have I ever had this many fish die from from any other aquatics store. I feel like I have been literally throwing money down the drain with all of my recent purchases from this store with fish that die in less than 48hs of bringing them home. I understand this hobby is a gamble and their are many variables to success, but all my parameters and procedures are on par, so that only leaves me to doubt this store. Even though every one bashes big chain stores, I have had better luck with saltwater fish at Petco than this place Pros: null Cons: null more

Won't return 10/6/2011

We purchased 9 fish from AquaDome for our new fish tank. We already had 5 fish in it with plenty of room for more. Sadly the tetras we purchased had Ick and the Angel fish had some sort of bacterial infection that then got passed around to all our other fish. Only 1 of the AquaDome fish survived. When talking to another fish owner they said that this had happened on several occasions from the Tetras they purchased at aqua dome. Everyplace will test your water for you, so that isn't a real selling point for me. They were nice enough when they sold us the fish, but I don't like having to worry if they are healthy or not. Petsmart got us turned around and we saved all the fish we purchased there along with the 1 remaining from AquaDome. Cool place, but just for looking not for buying. more

Be careful.. 7/27/2010

Some of their decorations turned my tank yellow, and I spent $120 on freshwater aquarium decorations. It's not obvious to a beginner that driftwood would have to be soaked beforehand so that it won't turn the tank yellow, and since I was asking them about using it, this is an important piece of information to mention. Also, they will give you really bad advice about fish which contradicts common knowledge of freshwater experts. They just want to make a sale. I would be really careful getting stuff here, they can ruin your first aquarium. Pros: Cool building Cons: Dishonesty more

Love it!! 4/7/2010

After visiting another local, south Austin aquarium supply store yesterday and being totally creeped out, the Austin Aqua Dome was a breath of fresh air. Pros: friendly & helpful staff, lots of healthy fish, fun building more

SHOP HERE- screw the big chains 2/22/2010

I think the staff is great- they always remember us... they answer questions and KNOW their stuff... UNLIKE the big chains... we have always had great experiences with them... their fish are healthy... hearty... their tanks are always clean... ask about the membership plan if you are a frequent fish or food buyer... Pros: HELPFUL, KNOWLEDGABLE, QUALITY Cons: NONE more

I would NOT go anywhere else until proven horrible 3/7/2009

Ok so i have seem so good and bad reviews about this place and all I have to say is that my finacee and I own two 55 gallon fish tanks one salt water and one of african cichilds and we buy everything from aquaplace from fish to food. So I highly recommend this place to everyone. I mean where else can you go that has these prces, great advice, test your water, and I have never had a single fish die from aquadome, but when I used to buy my fresh water fish from petsmart they would die within a few days. Any how unless you can find somewhere better than this place then why look anywhere else! Cons: the parking in the back sometimes is crowd but that doesnt stop me from always buying their products more

Cichlids 2/17/2009

Cool building, Sh*ty staff... they have a pretty decent cichlid selection but will tell you that you can mix any fish to make a sale. the lady gave me some bad advice about some mori's which ended up in about $60 down the drain. be cautious with advice given.. more

My first choice 1/27/2009

It's always my first choice when I'm looking for salt water stuff. Nothing is cheap with this hobby but they have the best selection. Especially if you go right after a shipment. I think sometimes fish go into shock from all the traveling they do. I've never had a sick fish come from here. Great live rock, hard to find. more

Best Salt Water Selection in Austin 10/14/2008

Closed on Monday when they receive shipments. No one poking and prodding the bags. I find the staff helpful and friendly and always willing to listen. Great selection of dry goods and membership get you 20% and 10% off livestock. Store is always clean and in good order. Best selection of invertebrates, live rock and marine fish. I have had no health issues with any live purchase. Staff takes the time to help you build a community tank with fish that get along. They actually answer their phone and answer your questions. My go to store in Austin. more

The best fish store in Austin!!!! 7/21/2008

My family have never had any problems with anything we have ever bought from the Austin Aqua Dome. All of the fish( fresh, salt or pond)have all been very healthy and we have had our fish that we bought from them for years!!! the also have the best prices on pond plants! I recomend them to everyone who is interested in fish. Pros: best prices and friendly staff that stand behind their product Cons: parking, not enough more

Unfortunately, your only saltwater choice in south austin 6/27/2008

Freshwater fish are ok here but the saltwater fish are usually very unhealthy. Staff is ok, but make sure you research before you go because most of the time it seems they would rather just get you out the door instead of giving sound advice. The fish are priced competitive but the shelf items are usually pretty overpriced. Overall it's ok, just make sure you research and are very careful about which fish you buy there. If you are willing to drive up north you should check out some of the fish stores up there as well. Pros: only saltwater store in south austin (that I can find) Cons: unhealthy saltwater fish, shelf items overpriced (unless they are on sale) more

Best salt water prices in Austin. Not open on Mondays. High mortality rate on fish stock. 5/12/2008

The staff is very knowledgeable, and the prices are the lowest in Austin. It is my understanding that they are low because they buy from a supplier who doesn't quarantine the fish and sells directly to them. This causes the mortality rate on the fish to be higher than other stores. Once again, you get what you pay for. Be careful to quarantine the fish for a few days before placing in your tank. more

Great fish selection. Don't like the no post price policy 1/31/2008

Selection is good. I don't like that prices are not posted. Some items are priced very well though once you find out what the price is. Best selection of fish in town but its H i t or miss if they are healthy or not. Pros: Great live fish selection Cons: no posted prices more

Nice selection, fish health not so good 5/12/2007

Staff seem friendly. Interesting building. Decent selection of supplies. Equipment minimal. Prices for livestock are not given anywhere--you must ask and they do not refer to a price list. The fish health is pretty questionable; I have been there many times and always have seen dead or unhealthy fish. Sometimes have very large fish in way too small of a tank. Best selection of salt water fish anywhere in town though--if you're one of those who like to experiment with (kil l) exotic fish that are completely unsuitable for a home aquarium. Never carries tank-raised, tank-bred fish (I asked and was told this). (I never looked at the freah water livestock, so this review refers only to the salt water animals.) Pros: Selection of salt water fish Cons: Health of fish; I'd quarantine all specimens more

This is the best in Austin for livegoods 4/16/2007

Very helpful staff, especially in the saltwater section. Really great prices, lower than most online shopping sites and Im sure the lowest in town. Get the membership, 10% off livestock goes a long way. Doesnt have the most outstanding selection but good quality. Did I mention Great Prices! Only open until 7 so go early. Pros: Prices more
