Extremely professional & talented tattoo artist 6/26/2009

Tanya is an amazing artist and extremely professional. She calms first-time jitters easily and provides excellent instructions for caring for a new tattoo. She is extremely professional and good at adjusting a client-supplied design to improve its ""tattooability"" while remaining true to the client's wishes. Above the Pearl is extremely clean and safe, and the artwork and music provide a comfortable atmosphere. This is a good place for anyone, particularly for a first tattoo! Amazing work 6/20/2009

This has been the best tattoo experience I have the pleasure of having. Tanya goes above and beyond in all aspects of her work. Not only was she able to take a vague idea with random pictures and turn it into a beautiful piece she did such amazing work and details, I couldn't be happier! What was also so amazing was her customer service skills. I never once unappreciated or that I was just another customer. She made every time I saw her a pleasure. Best Needle Massage in Town! 6/15/2009

I just received an amazing piece of work from Tanya and my tattoo experience with her could not have been better. Her shop is super clean and is covered with wonderful artwork. Using a very poor sketch that I brought in Tanya created an incredible and creative design that far exceeded anything I could have imagined. Getting the actual tattoo was cake. Tanya made me feel at ease and very comfortable though out the whole tattoo process. The end result was a stunning piece of art that I absolutely love. Tanya is an unbelievably gifted artist with an eye for detail. There is a tremendous amount of effort and care that goes into her work and it shows when you leave her shop with a great tattoo. BEST TATTOO PLACE EVER 4/29/2009

It was my first tattoo, so i looked up and down for a place id feel comfortable in. I went into about 5 places before finding above the pearl, and let me say, i was scared to get it done by those places. i walked in and the lady was just like 'come on in the boys need something to do! there just playing with power tools.' well, i walked out of that place. for as long as i stay in portland i will continue going back to tanya at above the pearl for any tattoo work. she really cares about her customers and you can tell. i came in with a shaky concept and she turned it into something beautiful. her shop is amazingly clean and carried such a friendly and comfortable vibe. she knows what she's doing and giving her a bit of artistic license goes a long way. the time in between appointments only goes to show how good she is, she takes her time and really individualizes, it truly is worth the wait. Look no further 3/25/2009

My first tattoo experience here in Portland was terrible. I felt belittled, not heard, and ultimately I didn't get what I wanted. I visited Tanya at Above the Pearl reluctantly but had a great experience. In two sittings and a consultation I felt comfortable and valued. However, the best part was her art. She is skilled, detailed, and will do everything to get the tattoo just perfect. She meticulously went about placement, colors, and shading. She even did a bit of touch up and cover work for me. Everything is professional and clean and she even remembered my music preference 3 months after my first sitting. Take the time and do your tattoo right. A great experience!!! 3/18/2009

From the first contact with Tanya via the internet, the experience was beyond my expectations. The shop was clean, organized and felt very safe. Tanya as an excellent artist and was great to work with. I enjoyed the conversation during the tattoo and the results are great. If you are looking for a clean, professional studio where you can fully trust your artist, please give Tanya a call. UPDATE: went back this weekend for some touch-up on my foot as well as an addition to the piece....It was worth the 5-hour drive to see Tanya. I will NEVER go anywhere else again. Thanks so much! A great artist 3/16/2009

Tanya did my first ""real"" tattoo, a birthday present to myself and I could not be happier. I am not artistic at all. I explained what I was looking for and Tanya came up with a design that I absolutely love. It is perfect. Best Tattoos Ever 3/13/2009

I am not new to getting tattoos. I own 35+ hours of ink under my skin. My 8 most recent hours have been added to my tattoo collection by Tanya at ABOVE THE PEARL TATTOO. I can't decide what I like best about Above the Pearl.... the clean shop, calm environment, or Tanyas amazing abitilty's! Tanya has turned some of my personal artwork into tattoos for me and enhanced an older tattoo back to life. Out of all of my tats my favorite is the custom design Tanya gave me from a few ideas I had. She drew up numerous versions of it then I picked the one I loved. It turned out better than perfect. I have recommended Above the Pearl to numerous friends and many tattoo admiring strangers. You can't find a better tattoo experience anywhere!!!! Pros: Clean, Calm, Experienced more

Great place to get a tattoo! 1/28/2009

Tanya is awesome. She drew up several different pictures of what I wanted (might I add - they were all great) & we took it from there. She is a professional - her studio is private, clean & quiet. You don't have to worry about any ""lurkers"" or other artists running about. I would highly recommend her to anyone. This is my 2nd tattoo & by far the better (best) experience! I have already received many compliments on my tattoo & I have had it for less than a week. :) more

Clean, professional, great tattoo experience! 1/25/2009

Tanya was great , she took the time to listen to what I wanted, and even helped me find a font that I liked. I've had tattoos before, and felt like I wasn't being pressured into anything... She was very good at placing the tattoo, and making sure that everything was precisely done. Her studio is clean and comfortable, and price was definitely fair. I love that it's only her, and there aren't a lot of hustle and bustle of other artists around. Will definitely be getting my next tattoo done by Tanya :) I would highly recommend her to anyone! more

Excellent Experience 1/14/2009

When I was 18 I got a tattoo. A few years later I started really regretting what I had gotten (I didn't regret having a tattoo, though). So I went to my brother who had just started tattooing as a hobby and he attempted to cover it. I loved the picture - he had drawn it himself. We only got the outline done when we decided to stop and pick it back up the next day (it really hurt!), but we never did. Eight years later I was still walking around with what really looked like a big black mess on my leg. Everytime I would wear my swimsuit, people would as ""What IS that?"" So not what you want to hear about your tattoo!! So a friend of mine referred me to Above the Pearl Tattoo and I saw that Tania was really good at ""re-work"". I had told her I wanted to just have the tattoo finished, since I loved the picture and plus it never occurred to me that I could turn it into something else without going gigantic. She gave me a beautiful piece of art that is clear and brightly colored and most importantly not too big! It is now a completely different picture, but I absolutely love it. I just trusted her expert opinion and am so happy I did. I was very impressed with her studio and how clean everything was. She is very meticulous about her work and operates a good little business. I will gladly show off my tattoo next time I'm at the beach! more

    About Tanya: Tanya earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications: Graphic & Publication Design from California State University, Chico in 1994.

    In 2003 Tanya "lost her taste" for the Xerox corporate culture. She studied tattooing under the direction of Rio Degennaro at the Oregon School of Tattoo Arts, and has since devoted her passion and talents to operating a successful tattoo business, establishing long-lasting client relationships, and other artistic pursuits.
