Awesome Exerience!! 9/1/2011

Tanya is the best! I brought in my own drawing and she was able to sharpen it up where my own artistic skills lacked. I couldn't be more pleased with the finish art. Also, she provided other renditions of my idea for me to consider. Her studio is relaxing and was a very pleasant environment to have work done. Although you have to make appointments far in advance, I found it actually nice to have a buffer of time to finalize my decision on the tattoo I was getting. After all, tattoos are permanent and shouldn't be rushed. When the time comes to expand the artwork further, she will definitely get my call. more

I spent time look at various artist's work when I decided on my 2nd tattoo. I'm extremely happy that I chose Tanya. The work on her site speaks for itself. My work required very fine lines and I know a lesser artist wouldn't have produced something so wonderful. Tanya completed it in very good time and every meeting with her was very relaxed and friendly. She made absolutely sure that what I was getting was exactly what I wanted, and she even offered her artist's opinion on what I brought to her. Without a doubt, I'll be going to her for my next tattoo, which I imagine will be as soon as possible. more

Best and 1st Tattoo Experience Ever 4/27/2011

Waiting until I turned 40 to get my first tattoo took a lot of patience as I have wanted one for along time. In my years I found many life experiences that I wanted incorporated into my tattoo. I researched many tattoo artists here in Portland and also in Seattle. I found Tanya at Above the Pearl on the internet and loved her style and graphic design. My first meeting with her was all about concept design, our second meeting was an art review of her ideas, our third was the tattoo itself. Waiting as long as I did to get my first tattoo I chose to do something pretty significant in size and complexity. Tanya is absolutely fantastic ... start to finish! Extremely professional and her work is outstanding. I was shocked to see that from art concept to the actual tattoo the image was identical ... Absolutely perfect! Can't wait for my next one! I had Tanya do some work on my forearms last December. I have had previous work done at 3 different shops and hands down, Tanya was the best. She puts a tremendous amount of effort into making sure you're going to love the finished work. My wife will shoot me if I have any more work done, but if I do, I'm definitely going back to Tanya! more

I've had work done all over the world including some places here in Portland. I am happy with all that I have. A tattoo shop has many layers to the experience...The artist (personality, professionalism, etc), cleanliness, and atmosphere. I'm sure there is more to it but you get my drift...I cannot think of one place in all the shops that I have been to that would get 5 stars in all categories...Above the Pearl does. Tanya is a very personable pleasant person who doesn't shine you on in conversation. She is extremely professional and honest. The shop is clean and inviting. Tanya is extremely meticulous in her work. Finally, I got exactly what I wanted and more. Tanya, you are a first class shop and I will come back. more

This was my first tattoo, and I'm really satisfied with my entire experience. I brought Tanya in an illustration from a children's book that I wanted modified slightly for my tattoo. She added/omitted the necessary elements for it to be a complete tattoo in perfect stylistic sync with the original illustration-- it's totally flawless. Tanya is not mega-chatty or anything, but she's perfectly friendly and very professional-- she talked me through the whole process so that there would be no surprises, and made sure I wasn't freaking out. Most importantly though, my tattoo looks awesome, and it's healed perfectly and painlessly (I followed her after-care instructions exactly). The whole thing was so much easier than I expected it would be. more

This was my very first tattoo and I would say don't go anywhere else. \r \r I had an idea of what I wanted and when we met she listened to what I had to say, looked at my (very rough) drawings and created something that I am proud to have on my body.\r \r She made getting this first tattoo so very easy. I was a little nervous but she talked me through every step. Checked on me during the process. And put up with my little entourage of friends that came to cheer me on. \r \r The aftercare information is presented clearly and concisely and I am having ZERO pain or problems the day after. \r \r Studio space is creative and inviting and as I've heard this can be addictive I would be surprised if I didn't go back. If you are looking for someone who does fantastic work in a clean and comfortable environment I HIGHLY recommend Tanya.\r \r I also want to say that I was prepared for it to be MUCH more expensive than it ended up being. Beautiful work. Nice space. Comfortable and highly competent artist. Can't say enough good things. This should be your tattoo artist. more

I have gotten both of my tattoos from Tanya, and I am so glad I chose her! Tanya is a talented artist who understood more about what I wanted than I even knew myself! Both times I came in with rough ideas, and she designed amazing pieces that were exactly what I wanted! It's like she can read your mindddddddd!!! :) Her studio is super clean and bright, and her pricing is so fair. Next year I will get my third tattoo and guess where I will be going!!?? Super clean, professional shop. She is a true artist, and clearly takes great care and pride in her work. After two meetings with her trying to finalize a cover-up design over my old, lame tattoo, she was unsatisfied that any of our options would work. I was really happy that I'd found someone as thoughtful, picky, and honest as myself. I had another artist at another shop tell me he could do the cover-up. He hadn't even looked at the old design. I knew I couldn't trust him right then and there. Eventually we found a design that would work. I'm so glad she took the time to do some research. the old design is gone! Now I have an awesome tattoo!!! Thanks. more

Fantastic Artist and Experience 12/22/2010

I did a lot of research before deciding where in Portland to get my first tattoo. I knew I wanted something unique and special to me, and I knew I needed an artist who understood and was excited about that. Tanya was exactly that artist. My tat required very fines lines and an incredibly precise layout to fit exactly the way I wanted it to on my skin (if she puts it in her gallery, it's the telephone poles). She drew me exactly what I wanted, in perfect style. The whole process was about an hour and a half, and I really felt comfortable and happy the whole way through. Listening to my own music was a bonus, and truly made the experience perfect for me. Aftercare was a breeze with her instructions: the ink healed beautifully with very minimal itching and absolutely no mess or heavy scabbing. In fact, at first I was worried because it was healing TOO well! I felt that it must be a mistake and my tattoo would simply disappear one day. But nope, three weeks later it has healed wonderfully, looks gorgeous, and I get so many comments on it. Any new ink from here on out will be done by Tanya; I cannot recommend her more! more

I got my last tatto in 1985 - it sucked - and over the past 25 years have been extremely hesitant about ever getting another one. After much research, I liked what I read about Tanya enough to take my chances once again. She came across as an artist, and clearly takes great care and pride in her work. After two meetings with her trying to finalize a cover-up design over my old, lame tattoo, she was unsatisfied that any of our options would work. Though frustrated, I was really happy that I'd found someone as thoughtful, picky, and honest as myself - I had another guy positive he could do it without even looking at it! Knew I couldn't trust him right then and there. Likewise, I knew Tanya was the one I wanted when it came to adding permanent artwork to my body. Ultimately, I scratched the cover-up idea and went with something completely new and she did an amazing job. 48 hours later, I have had absolutely no pain or swelling at all, and I LOVE the design so much I can't wait to have her create a matching one on my other arm in the near future. more

I went to Above the Pearl to get my first tattoo. Tanya was very nice and helpful since our first appointment. She came up with exactly what I wanted and now the tattoo looks so amazing. She made me feel comfortable the whole time. She really cares about her work and her clients. I couldn't have asked for a better person to do my first tattoo.Everyone has been saying how great it looks and that she did such an amazing job on it. My friends say they can tell she took her time to make sure it was perfect and all of the lines are perfectly straight and detailed. I definitely plan on going back to Above the Pearl for more work in the future. more

Tayna at Above the Pearl is to recommended to anyone who is serious about getting a high quality tattoo. Tayna recently competed my first tattoo and I culdn't be happier about the final product and the experience. She is thoroughout and creative, and I felt certain that I would get a tattoo that stands out. Att the first visit she carefully outlined the entire process, answered all of my questions and took down my ideas about my design. At the tattoo appointment Tayna presented three variations on the design, any one of which I would have been happy with. She is patient with newbies such as myself (a 44 year old suburban mom) but her portfolio shows the true breadth of her experience. The actuall tattooing was down in a clean environment with a great deal of professionalism. I'm hooked! when I get my next tattoo it will be with Tayna. more

I hardly know where to begin. There is so much to rave about regarding my experience. I will start with how I found Tanya. It was the best recommendation of all.... Her clients. I had been stopping in at shops throughout PDX for almost 2 years. I had my artwork in hand, the idea in my head. I never felt anything click with other studios. I spoke with a few people who had tattoos that I like and Viola! Tanya's name came up 3 times in a row. I booked the appointment. She reviewed my the art work and asked detailed questions about style, placement, my likes and dislikes. She was the first person that didn't slap a book of previous work in front of me (Not that she didn't have it... It's just not her style) What a great concept... My tattoo was about my ideas and desires not about her past work. I was sold! Her studio is wonderful, airy, and has beautiful light. When you look around the studio it becomes obvious that she is an artist that works in several mediums. I loved the eclectic music. Communication - I joked with my wife and called Tanya the ""Great communicator"" She kept us (The wife got some ink too) both advised of all aspects of the experience and her policies. The Tattoo - Wow, wow, and wow!!!!!!!!! I am amazed that she took a concept I was struggling with and so easily created what I had been trying to articulate. On the day of my appointment she presented 4 variations of my idea. The hardest part was picking one of several great ideas! Getting inked - Tanya's work is stunning in it's clarity and precision. No wavy lines here. No deep ink in one place and shallow in the others. Tanya made my wife's tattoo look elegant and mine look tough as nails. Business owner - As a fellow small business owner I really appreciated her demeanor and approach. She is forthright and professional. It is obvious she cares about her reputation. Cons... Nope... Can't think of one. I looked at other reviews and noted a few complaining about the wait. If you order a Ford you get a Ford just like everyone else has on the road. If you order the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 (look it up) Well... Then you are going to wait to get it. But when you do get it you will be rollin' with something others only dream about. Thanks for the Celtic Compass rose in stone Tanya!!!! Now....about that arm band I have been toying with.... more

For years now I have been wanting to get a memorial tattoo to my grandma. I looked around not only for a artist who does flowers well but also someone that I would get along with as well (it is important especially if you are going to be tattooed for a long period of time). Tanya took my ideas and found the perfect design that not only is pretty but it is something that reminds me so much of my granny. I admire that she did lose patience with me as my skin is pretty thick and other complications. I look forward to getting tattooed by Tanya in the future. more

Lovely Experience and Beautiful Art 8/8/2010

This was my first tattoo. I picked Tanya based on all of the positive reviews and that her studio was within walking distance of my apartment. I walked into my consult appointment having only a vague concept of what I'd like. I was probably not the ideal tattoo candidate because although I'd been thinking of getting one for years I have no artistic inclination and had only come up with my idea (a tattoo of the flower that I was named after) a week before my appointment. I showed Tanya some pictures of the flower and explained I wanted the tattoo somewhere easily concealable. Within moments she proposed curving the flower around and putting it on my ribs. She would draw the art and we would have another appointment in a few months as an art consultation, which took place a week before the appointment. At the art appointment she accepted my feedback patiently and when I walked in a week later for my tattoo appointment everything was in readiness. I was still terribly nervous, but Tanya was kind and made it clear if I wasn't ready or wasn't sure about the art then it was fine with her that we cancel. I chose not to wait. The procedure itself went well. It hurt, but the table was comfortable and everything was very sterile. I felt very confident in her abilities. I also accepted the topical anesthetic she offered (at an additional charge) after the outlining was done. That helped the pain immensely! She bandaged me up and gave me very specific instructions. Then she also gave me a care package (with the lotion, aftercare instructions, and some other goodies) before I left. We also scheduled a check-up for a month later so she could see how it healed and determine whether it would need retouching. I followed the instructions to the letter and the tattoo healed perfectly. I also realized that the tattoo itself was extraordinarily placed and curved perfectly on my ribs. The flower design is simple, delicate, and something I can wear with pride for the rest of my life. I'm also glad that she talked me into going a little larger than I'd originally planned (although not as large as she'd first proposed) because it fits my body nicely. I have spent far too much time over the past few months vainly staring at my left side in the mirror as a result. Side note - if you want your own music then bring an iPod, but not an iPhone because the cell signal will interfere with the speakers. I highly recommend Tanya for her professionalism, artistry, and general concern with making sure your experience is a positive one. I walked away with a beautiful tattoo and no regrets. more

While the wait is the only con I have, please know the wait is WORTH IT. Tanya's studio is clean, peaceful, relaxing, she plays music while she works, has the window open for fresh air right next to the table, and chats with you. \r \r This was my first tattoo, and she made me so comfortable, talked me through what she was doing, what I needed to do, etc. She gave me breathing techniques for when the pain got more intense, and even allowed me to take pictures during the process. \r \r She sent me home with a cool after-care kit, that included some swag for Above the Pearl that I plan to leave around town. Her after-care directions are sensible and clear, and she sends you home with everything you need to ensure your ink heals nice and sharp and bright. Mine is only 4 days old, and it's healing very, very well with her instructions.\r \r It was so nice and not intimidating to be able to have work done in a studio where we were the only people, could chat or not as we felt, and generally enjoy the entire experience at my own pace.\r \r I haven't decided if I'm going to get more ink, but if I do, I plan to call Tanya to do the work for me. I highly reccommend her. Pros: peaceful, friendly, relaxing Cons: the wait more

My experience with Tanya was a very positive one. I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted, and a lot of my feedback/ideas were contradictory, but she worked with me to explain what probably wouldn't work, ran with the ideas that did, and came up with a great finished product. My wife and I will return to her in the future. Pros: Clean and bright. She'll make your design work. Cons: Long wait, but worth it. more

I got my first tattoo with Tanya after seeing her amazing work on my wife's arm piece. Thanks to a thorough and professional consultation, Tanya knew exactly what I was looking for and I knew what to expect - for example, we discussed how certain aspects of the design I brought wouldn't really work based on the size of the tattoo I had in mind. The tattooing process itself was as pleasant as it could have been (thanks largely to Tanya's friendliness and communicativeness), and the design came out exactly as I'd hoped it would. Tanya has tons of experience and that shows. I'll be going back for my follow-up appointment in a couple of months, and I'll definitely be back at some point for my inevitable next tattoo as well. About Tanya: Tanya earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communications: Graphic & Publication Design from California State University, Chico in 1994.

In 2003 Tanya "lost her taste" for the Xerox corporate culture. She studied tattooing under the direction of Rio Degennaro at the Oregon School of Tattoo Arts, and has since devoted her passion and talents to operating a successful tattoo business, establishing long-lasting client relationships, and other artistic pursuits.
