Wonderful Night Out Place 4/11/2006

This restaurant has it all--great service, great atmosphere, and great food. My husband and I have come here several times for special occasions and are always thrilled when we leave. I would highly recommend the beef tenderloin as well as the lamb. Save room for dessert, they have great one! Also, be sure to look out, they participate in restaurant week and it is a great time to get a wonderful meal for a great price! more

1789 Restaurant 4/10/2006

This one of the better restaurants in the area. This great restaurant tucked away in Georgetown is very highly regarded. All the food is perfectly prepared here. I ordered the lamb the last time I was here and it was so amazing. It melted in my mouth. I cannot wait to come back here again. more

1789 Restaurant 3/22/2006

1789 is considered one the best restaurants in DC. I enjoyed my meal, everything was well prepared but I was not blown away by my meal. The service was very good and the ambiance of the place is first-rate. If you go here expect a very good meal but there are better options in the city. more

1789 2/21/2006

1789 is the best restaurant in the District… and it’s priced accordingly. If you’ve got a couple hundred dollars to burn, treat yourself and a friend to an incredible meal. I highly recommend the Rack of American Lamb for an entrée, though you really can’t go wrong with any menu item. For dessert, though, definitely try out the vanilla and chocolate bread pudding. I’m not necessarily a big fan of bread pudding, in general, but this version was different and incredible. If you want to try this place out, but don’t quite have the cash, keep in mind that they offer a pre-theater prix-fixe menu available weekdays before 6:45pm and an after-hours menu available Sunday through Thursday after 9pm, and Friday and Saturday nights after 10pm. Both these menus are $35. more

Old City Charm Abounds! 1/17/2006

You'll feel like an honored guest before you even set foot in the place. Attendants will swing the heavy front door open for you and immediately the host/hostess will greet you. They have, I believe, 5 separate themed dining rooms for you to enjoy and make each visit a unique one. On my most recent visit, my party enjoyed the civil war room. 1789 is an old schooler that, with the help of chef Ris LaCoste, has managed to keep up with the hipper restaurants of a new generation. more

Editorial
  • Named after the year the Constitution was adopted, 1789 is a cozy nod to America's romanticized past. Dine beside a fireplace or under a gas chandelier in this renovated two-story Federal townhouse featuring American antique furniture. The John Carroll Room is laden with early prints of Georgetown University, while the pub features a pew salvaged from a 16th century Irish monastery. Waiters serve every entree--whether the roast pheasant, rack of lamb or spiced Carolina red snapper--to tables set with Limoges china and silver. Desserts perfect for an old English nursery rhyme--sticky pumpkin pudding, black mission fig gratin, and poire William mousse--seal each meal with a sweet kiss.
