Swift Cleaners has been in business for quite some time, so they must have some satisfied customers. I much prefer the DC Dry Cleaners on Columbia Road, and I'd probably recommend trying other places in the neighborhood before going to swift. On at least two occasions, I had to return my garments because they either didn't get my stains all the way out, or they had actually made stains of their own during the dry cleaning process.

The number one "pro" in favor of this British importer is its uniqueness. No where else in the Washington area can you find so many UK imports in one spot. The have a decent cigar selection in a walk-in humidor, but the British goodies are the real attraction here. Here you'll find all the treats from the other side of the Atlantic, such as jelly babies, prawn cocktail crisps, and sundry canned items. They also have a number of PAL videos converted for American viewing, and if you need your own videotapes converted, they'll do that for you as well.

After you've tried all the museums and tours, you wonder what there is left to see in the city. The Hillwood Mansion, tucked away near Rock Creek Park in Northwest DC, is a welcome treat for those who think they've seen it all. Formerly the home of Post Cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, the mansion and surrounding gardens offer a look into what high society was like in the 1950s and 60s. She amassed a large french and russian antiques collection, so you'll see paintings and personal affects formerly owned by Peter the Great and Marie Antoinette. You need to call ahead to arrange a tour.

The only thing positive I have to say about home rule is that it's not as ridiculous as the furniture stores that you'll find further down 14th Street near P Street. Home Rule sells counches and chairs for people who don't actually sit on their furniture at super expensive prices. The staff are very friendly, but their wares are not utilitarian in the least. If you want to buy furniture just to be used when your rich company comes over, then I'd recommend home rule, otherwise hit Value City!

I've been popping in and out of Second Story books for over six years now. Interestingly enough, what drew me in there in the first place was not the books, but their other media. They also have a sizeable used video, dvd and record collection ini addition to their used books. The pricing structure for each is very reasonable. While I don't think the staff is quite as familiar with all the books as Idle Time Books up 18th Street, they're more than eager to help you if you just ask.

This is one of the handful of estates in DC that allow public tours of both the house and gardens. Simply put, you won't find a more idyllic setting than strolling around the gardens of Dumbarton Oaks. It's actually surprising that they keep this property so well hidden. You don't even know it's there unless you're looking for it, but when you enter the space is huge. They have several differently-themed gardens and each is more beautiful than the next. Although they maintain the grounds year round, I recommend going in the spring and summer months when everything is in full bloom.

This place has one of the toughest reservations in town and it's easy to see why: They only have about a dozen tables and they serve the tastiest steaks just about anywhere. They age the beef and hand trim it on the premises. They do wonders with lesser-known cuts of beef and the classics shine like nowhere else. Forget the a la carte business that the chain steakhouses push on you; all of Ray's steaks come with delicious creamed spinach and mashed potatoes. Try the scallops and key lime pie, too.

This gets my vote as DC's top Italian. Chef Cesare LaFrancone I think has surpassed his mentor ROberto DOnna as the top Italian Chef in the city. While the decor is modern but bland, the food will provide you with memories to last a lifetime. Their risotto is worthy of song, and the vast array of dishes presents the best of all of Italy's culinary regions. Reservations recommended. They also have a discounted pre-theater menu.

Southside 815 is a real gem in this city of overpriced fancy food. They feature a southern themed menu with portions big enough to feed a family. On top of that, it's one of the cheapest places you'll find in town, too. One of the most outstanding dishes is the Charleston Chicken, featuring a smothered chicken breast with collard greens and mashed potatoes. Their bar food is also delicious too, which complements the low drink prices found therein.

Old Glory is a Georgetown institution to be sure, but the reason isn't always the food. It's a cool hangout for the bar crowd in a prime location, so it deserves to stay in business just for that. The BBQ is by no means bad, but sometimes you have to be careful what you order. Many of the sides aren't worthy of too much praise. The service can be lacking at times as well. But as an overall experience, it's a fun place to take people who've never been to DC. Your table will get stamped with a hughe cast iron thingy and you'll get a tootsie pop at the end. Who could ask for more?
