nice doctors, parking 2/19/2008

I got a same day appointment, great service, and good prices. Had lots of parking nearby. Although my dog is shy around vets the vet techs had him comfy and secure in their arms while Max got the shots he needed. Pros: Parking, fast, can get you in quickly, service, friendly Cons: small office more

I <3 Dr. Mann! 2/18/2008

Last week my 7 yr old kitty Shea was showing signs of sickness. As the Neurotic mom that I am I immediately knew she needed to visit the vet. The only vet Shea had ever been to was in NJ but I really didn't want to travel w/her for an hour in the car. My girlfriend recommended Dr.Mann so I called NorthSide Vet & spoke to a very friendly receptionist. I explained to her the symptons & she was quick to fit Shea in the next morning (I could have got her an emergency appt.but it wasn't necessary) The next day I brought Shea. I must not forget to tell you how difficult of a cat she is...just think wild tiger in the African jungle. To my surprise Dr.Mann had worked in a zoo before & w/a tiger to boot. I thought wow! then he will definitely be able to deal w/Shea. Well, the story goes that Shea was treated for a urinary track infection which most cats get but untreated it can be deadly. In my eyes Dr.Mann saved Shea's life & really was a true sweeatheart through-out the whole thing. I even recommended my boyfriend to take his cat there for a check-up. Dr.mann is true animal lover & I will continue to take Shea & any other animals I adopt in the future.\r Thanks so much North Side Vet! Pros: Friendly staff & amazing doctors! Cons: Pricey but worth it! more

Wonderful 1/11/2008

The vets here are friendly, professional, and trustworthy. I first went there with my elderly, sick cat, and they treated him in his last days. Dr. Mann and Dr. Eisner were extremely compassionate and helpful during this difficult time. They even refused to charge me for the euthanasia and some of the cremation fees. I'm now going back to them with my new kittens. They emphasize holistic care, and they recommend things like high quality wet foods. Even though this can get pricey, they've never pressured me to try outlandish treatments or made me feel guilty for not having an unlimited budget. The only negative thing about the practice is that one of the receptionists (I don't know her name, but she's short with glasses and long, dark hair) has a tendency to be rude. She also gave me the wrong price quote for a procedure and didn't provide me with some key pre-surgery info. Luckily, it didn't end up being a huge problem, but I wish she was as competent -- and warm -- as all the other staff members. All in all, this is a first-rate practice that maintains a neighborhood feel. Pros: Cases considered individually in detail, friendly atmosphere, holistic options, educational for owners Cons: One annoying receptionist, small waiting room more

excellent! 1/2/2008

I recently brought my dog in for a general check up and to see why he had such bad breath.\r I was very nervous about my appointment because I know bad breath in people can indicate all sorts of horrible diseases. From the moment I walked in and was greeted with a smile by the receptionist to the moment I left when the nurse gave my dog a treat, I felt like this was a place that really cared about animals.\r Dr Leiman examined my dog entirely, not just his mouth and heart etc, but entirely, even checking the bottom of his feet for problems! He assured me the bad breath was almost certainly coming from an infection in his gums caused by his teeth. He seemed so experienced and sure about the problem that my stress level went down to zero. He showed me which teeth were bad, and when we discussed the treatment options, he listened carefully to my concerns, financial constraints, and ability to take care of my dog afterwards. For example, he wanted to know if I would be able to brush his teeth every day and bring him in for dentistry every 6 months- if the answer was no, then he might be more likely to extract diseased teeth. It was nice to have an input, not to just be dictated to, like many other doctors seem to do.\r Anyway, I wanted other people who love their pets to know about this place.\r \r Pros: Very nice office staff, caring, competent, experienced vet more

love this vet! 11/16/2007

One of the best and most compassionate clinics around! Very personal touch with holistic and western medicine combined (great accupuncture). They compassionately nursed my baby through his last days and allowed him to pass with dignity. I can't say enough good.... Pros: Can get through to doctors anytime day or night more

Greedy, not focused, takes anything that walks in neglecting scheduled appointments. 11/4/2007

I personally did not enjoy my experience! 1st of all the meaning of appointment means NOTHING! I am new to the area and made an appointment to have my puppy checked out, they made it seem like they had plenty of open availability. When i arrived the tiny waiting room was full and 3 other people seemed to have the same time appointment as me???? Not only that, they invited a walk in appointment to join the waiting, calling it an emergency? An itchy cat is an emergency. So 55 minutes later I was seen by the woman Dr., who couldnt seem to stay focused on our appointment! She left the room several times to continue with other things she was doing at the same time?? I was already feeling neglected and it was noticibly obvious, which seemed to make her aggitated. Imagine that, she was mad at me for feeling neglected. The front staff was very compassionate (This must happen often) they were quick to make excuses for her. I left theyre with several unanswered BASIC wellness questions. I ended up going to Dr Felton around the corner after leaving where I was told an appointment was neccesary. I was also told that they hear this often about Northside and told me I would be a priority during my appointment! They also told me emergencies are reffered to emergency facilities. Since my experience I have spoken to several of you doggie park goers and found out that this has happen often and many new patients never come back. SHAME ON YOU. We do have lives to live as well, and our time is important, and certainly courteous well mannered proffesionalism hasn't died has it? Well nothing left to say, I learned a lesson. Pros: Exam room assistants & Front desk were exceptional Cons: un-proffessional Dr., Too many patients, lack of space more

great veterinary office for Wmsburg/Greenpoint pet owners 9/4/2007

Northside Veterinary clinic helped us with a stressful situation in a wonderful way. my boyfriend and i took his neglected elderly cat to see Dr. Eisner. Lola had extreme constipation due to arthritis and was in considerable discomfort. The doctors and other staff were wonderful. Dr. Eisner scheduled an appointment immediately to de-poop the cat (I did not get the name of the vet who performed the procedure but he was terrific, both with the medical procedure and in talking to us) and gave us sound advice as to her future care. Both vets were caring, compassionate and answered all our questions. This was two months ago and Lola is like a new cat. She no longer has constipation issues, is looking very pretty and is generally a happy cat all over. Also, when my boyfriend expressed his financial concerns, the office was understanding and flexible. These people genuinely care about the well-being of your animal. Pros: caring, competent staff; convenient location; Cons: small waiting room, not always open late - could do with another late hours day. more

Response to previous letter 8/19/2007

Dr Eisner and I have been out of town the past two weeks and were advised of this review by a client when we arrived home last night.\r Although we feel bad about the loss of your cat, we are unsure about what really happened. We had a wonderful relief vet covering for us, and neither he nor any of our staff can recollect any incident such as the one you described.\r If you have a complaint, we would appreciate it if you would let us know directly, rather than with a putdown on the internet with a non traceable name.\r Dr Daniel Leiman more

A bad vibe all around 8/9/2007

Brought my cats here and should have trusted my instincts to leave, but figured I would give it a chance in spite of the guilt trip and sales pitches for needless tests poured on by this vet. While on vacation, under these doctors ""care"" my catsitter who called for advice on our sick cat, was told he was depressed and would be fine. Mind you, Dr. Eisner nor Lehman would speak to her directly, the receptionist relayed the information. ""You can take him to a hospital, but it will cost about a thousand dollars and he'll get over it"".... so the poor thing died - needlessly. Oh, the office has yet to call to inquire as to how he got over his ""depression"" Had they expressed a concern for his well being and advised reasonably a visit to the hospital, it would have been done toot sweet. Just an awful experience all around at this place, and a fortune to boot. Pros: offer homeopathic remedies Cons: the doctors more

Smart, caring, concerned, flexible vets.....and reasonably price by NYC standards. 7/11/2007

I've taken my dog here for almost 8 years and while I sympathize with the people who have given negative revies, my experience and that of friends of mine has been above and beyond any other vet experience I've had before. Dr Eisner and Dr Leiman are both extremely caring and concerned vets as are the other vets who work with them. They ask smart questions and are very generous with information and suggestions that go beyond just treating a symptom or illness...they look at the pet's overall health, which I think is good. I, too, have had the experience of their being conservative about vaccinations....small animals shouldn't be overmedicated...which makes sense. I have never had another vet take that into consideration before. I had used vets in Manhattan, Austin TX, Philadelphia and DC and Northside's prices are GREAT. I know of cases where they are flexible when a pet owner cannot afford it. I have friends whose cat was dying and Dr Leiman actually made house calls to them. Unbelievable. He made their painful experience a little less so by doing this. Their practice has grown a lot over the last 8 years, and as a result, the waiting room is too small and sometimes the wait can be a little long. The staff is great about accommodating emergencies, though, and I try to just be understanding that other peoples' pets are maybe sicker than mine. The small waiting room would honestly be the only negative, but with real estate prices being what they are, it's probably not possible for them to move/expand. They do have longer office hours now, though.\r I highly recommend this veterinary practice to anyone who wants care by people who love your pet and who respect how important they are to your lives. The Eastern/Western combination of treatment is also a plus. Pros: thorough, caring, respectful, flexible hours Cons: cramped waiting room more

Experienced caring veterinarian 4/17/2007

I took my cat to the Northside Veterinary Clinic last Saturday and was very happy with the care that was given. She had been throwing up for three days and I was pretty worried about her. The doctor who looked at her (Dr Leiman) really put me at ease when he said ""she didn't look like she was on deaths door"" because I was worried she was. He explained everything he found when he checked her and then gave me, in writing, a list of the possible causes for the upset stomach. He proceeded to tell me what his thoughts were about each possible cause, and how he would go about figuring what the actual reason was. x rays and a test he ran made him think the problem was a reaction to something in the dry cat food so he had a very nice nurse give my cat fluids under the skin and then I had to give some herbal drops in her mouth 3X a day. I also gave her nothing but chicken. Unbelievably, she totally stopped throwing up and is fine now on a new canned food.\r I was impressed by the thoughtful, calm manner and experience of Dr Leiman.\r I recommend this vet clinic highly. Pros: experienced, thoughtful and kind Cons: 30 miute wait more

GREATEST VET I have ever been to. 3/15/2007

Brought my cat in for a first visit last week and I was so impressed with the staff and the doctors that I felt compelled to write this. \r My cat had a urinary tract blockage and the doctors handled the emergency immediately and saved my cat's life. After unblocking him they took him home with them to take care of him overnight. The main thing for me was that I did not have ample funds to have the procedure done. Dr. Eisner and Dr. Leiman said that it was more important to save my cat, as he would have died if he was not unblocked immediately. Money was not the main issue for these doctors; saving my cat was.\r At this writing he is home and doing well on his special diet. I will always be grateful. Pros: Great care and great doctors. Cons: Parking difficult before 10 AM more

If you love your pet- STAY AWAY!!! 3/15/2007

I took my 9 year old terrier in for bloodly stool and it was the biggest mistake. Nothside vet clinic was able to see her the same day and that was the only upside to this visit. I came prepared with stool samples and her previous six years of records from her vet in texas. While sitting in the office waiting i felt a very uneasy feeling but i figured I was already there so i should stay. Instead of treating the problem that I brought her in for the doctor tried to diagnose her with a totally unrealtable disease.i let her run a few test on her urine and payed my bill. I walked out of the office and was still very sick and I realized they did absolutely nothing to try and treat this problem. I took her back in waited another hour and let them give her fluids. So i leave and the next day called for her test result on her fecal exame hoping that they would give her some medicine. The receitionist told her results were in but i recieved a call from the doctor- by 5 pm - NO CALL. Next DAy- the same! In sort i had to take my dog into the city the next morning to an emergency vet where she was diagnosed an treated within 20 minutes. Its now a week later and I have never heard back from nothside vet clinic on what my dogs fecal test resusts were. I called to bring this to thier atttention and to let them know how i felt i was ripped of, my dog was not properly treated and how Dr Eisner tried to diagnose my dog with a life changing disease instead of treating the real reason i brougt my dog in. I spoke to the other Male vet. He talked down to me, made me feel like an idoit and bad pet owner. If you love your dogs like i love mine-they ARE my children- please do not take your dog or cat to Northside aniamal clinic. Northside will empty out your wallet and and make you feel hopeless about the care of your pet. Please read the other reviews- i am not the only one! PLease Stay away from this place!!!!!! Pros: NOthing Cons: poor animal care, rude doctors more

northside vet clinic is the best place to bring your pet 2/26/2007

This is a really nice veterinary clinic. The veterinarians and staff are friendly and seem to really like animals and people. Dr. Leiman was extremely thorough and called Dr, Eisner in to look at my dog for a quick second opinion. They discussed her skin condition in front of me, and worked out between the two of them the best way to treat her. What they came up with (diet change, a shampoo and a short course of hydrocortisone) really worked. She stopped scratching immediately, and though she has been off medication for a month, her skin is still perfect. I am writing this because I like animals, and want to steer other people to a good place for their pets. Pros: Great care, warm comfortable facility Cons: had to wait 3 days for an appointment more

Wonderful Clinic, Great Vets 1/29/2007

This clinic is warm and cozy. Colors are tropical (coral and teal) which gives it a welcome feeling.\r Dr. Eisner and Dr. Leiman are caring and seem to really like animals. Nobody here ""pushes"" vaccines or heartworm prevention and the price is right. I have been to other hospitals and have been shocked when I received my bill. Not so at Northside. Bills are not padded here.\r My partner and I also love that Dr. Eisner is a wealth of information when it comes to natural medicine.\r If this is not enough to rave about, let me add that they called us on Sunday with bloodtests that were done on Saturday (the day before). If all hospitals were like this one, our animal friends would be in great hands. Pros: Caring warm feeling Cons: Not many evening hours more

Dr. Eisner has an attitude, not warm 1/29/2007

I wanted to like this place, but Barbara Eisner has rubbed me the wrong way. First off, this lady is cold and curt. She's very ""business-like,"" which I don't like in my vet. The very first vet I saw there was actually very nice, but she's there very rarely. On most days, you will probably be treated by Eisner. Most recently, I dropped off my cat to get a lion cut in the morning, as I was told. Before I left, the vet told me she'll probably be ready by noon, 1 p.m. I called at noon, only to find out that they hadn't even started on her! She had been sitting in a cage for 3 hours. Then Eisner got on the phone. She immediately got defensive, listing off all the reasons -- surgeries, etc. -- why they hadn't gotten to my kitty yet. At no point did she try to make me feel better. Then, to my shock and horror, she actually said, ""you know what, maybe you should just come pick up your pet and take her to another vet, because I don't know how to make you happy right now."" It was so insane! I had never been spoken to this way by a vet or any service professional. There was no way I was gonna put my pet through that kind of trauma, of course; but it stunned me that a veterinarian would actually even make that suggestion -- to bring my pet in, have her wait for 3 hours for nothing and then take her back. How unethical, totally immoral. I'm glad it happened, though, because I've had an uneasy feeling about this place. It's incredibly cramped, tiny. There are only 2 rooms, where vets can see patients, so you always wait at least 20 minutes, no matter how on time you are. I've been recommended Felton Veterinary Services, so that's where I'll be taking my pet next. It's a shame, because I actually liked the other main vet at Northside, Dr. Leiman -- but he seems to hardly be there. If you truly truly adore, love, worship your pet, Northside is not the best place for them or you. Pros: Dr. Leiman. Cons: Cramped, not enough rooms to see patients, Dr. Eisner and her attitude. Inconvenient, odd hours. more

Best vet I have ever been to 12/25/2006

I had heard about this veterinary clinic from a friend of mine who has 3 cats. These cats are like his kids- he is very choosy about everything in regards to these cats so I took his recommendation seriously.\r I cannot thank him enough for steering me to this veterinary clinic. I had been to the Animal Medical Center with my cat last week for a urinary tract issue. They gave me antibiotics and another medication for him, and after 5 days he still was constantly in the litter pan and was very uncomfortable. Dr Eisner gave him an injection for pain, stuck acupuncture needles in him and gave me an herbal medicine to give him every 3 hours. It worked like magic! It was like she turned off a light switch- no more problem. She discussed diet with me to prevent a recurrence (no vet ever told me dry cat food was bad) and to top things off, she called me today- Christmas- to check on him and give me the result of his urinalysis! After the phone call I had to write this. Pros: incredible care, compassion, alternative treatment more

Awesome veterinary clinic 12/24/2006

I am a person who rarely writes reviews, but after reading the review from Jennasimone I feel obligated to give my opinion. My experience at the Northside Veterinary Clinic has been wonderful. Both Dr Eisner and Dr Leiman have been in the neighborhood for more than 10 years and are loved by everyone to whom I have ever spoken.\r I have never heard anyone complain about their prices or about overdoing tests. In fact, in my case, they talked me out of giving my dog shots they felt were unnecessary. These vets are about as ethical as any professional I have ever been to, human or animal.\r After reading the letter it seemed to me that Dr. Eisner was not ""off target"" at all and the dog did indeed have cancer. It's a shame this dog will not be able to benefit from these wonderful doctors. \r \r Pros: Ethical, professional, caring, competent Cons: very busy more

Alarmists, expensive and very unprofessional 12/18/2006

Our dog had a lump on his elbow that turned out to be cancerous. \r \r Our experience at Northside was trecherous. I relayed our dog's medical history to Dr. Eisner who, quite obviously, chose not to listen to me, and instead ran a whole battery of tests (read: expensive) that were off-target. Ultimately the problem was in the realm of what I initially discussed. \r \r Dr. Eisner, after discovering the cancer (and after reading a whole host of bacteria-related tests that were totally unnecessary), proceeded to warn me that it looked like Osteosarcoma: an extremely aggressive cancer that would have given my dog a couple of months to live. \r \r In short, both vets EIsner and Lehman proved to be wildly unhelpful. They were alarmists who laundry listed cancers before a diagnosis was even confirmed. I ultimately had to run all developments past my former vet back in Los Angeles. \r \r My husband and I were bowled over by the lack of professional judgment. It borderlined on unethical behavior. At the very least it was wildly irresponsible. \r \r I strongly advise any reader to take their animals elsewhere. While they seemed to be dog-lovers, the compliments stop there. Pros: dog-lovers Cons: alarmists, expensive, unprofessional more

User review by aalani 5/29/2006

Drs. Eisner and Leiman spend a long time with each patient and seem to really consider and care about each and every case that walks through their door. She specializes in Eastern medicine and he in Western; the combination is a nice one-two punch of healing for your pet. Pros: thorough, smart, caring Cons: expensive, inconvenient hours more
