Review content:
I am a member of the High Museum of Art. I think the new High is wonderful. It has been completely redesigned, and is very beautiful to look at. There is a delightful section just for kids, and in every section there are areas with chairs and books for free browsing. The Andrew Wyeth exhibit which just ended was exquisite, and I loved the self-guided tour of it with headphones and small players at no added expense.
However, there are some problems with the High. It is not easy to find your way around. There really do need to be more signs to let you know where you are going. Often it is very crowded, and it is hard to find a guide. It is much easier to find a person selling memberships than it is to find a person to just give you information. Also, while the guides are all very nice, when we were there during an enjoyable but packed Friday Night Jazz performance, the security people were very rude, not only to us but to other people. Apparently, you are not allowed to stop and stand on the ramps leading from one level to the other, even for a minute. I can understand the need for that, but that does not change the fact that the security guards were telling people in a rude and unfriendly way. It's going to take some time for everyone to learn all the rules.
Despite the sometimes confusing nature of the layout and that lack of consideration on the part of the security staff (and I must stress again that the guides were very, very nice,) the new High is definitely worth a visit. The art is varied, the presentations are informative, and the whole experience is very enjoyable. Wear comfortable shoes, and allow at least 4-6 hours to see everything.
