Empress of China is one of the few Chinese restaurants in Flint, and the food is excellent. The interior is nice and inviting so you want to sit and dine in. There is a large room that accommodates big parties, so you could have a birthday celebration, or just invite a lot of your friends out for dinner. There are many options from vegetarian, to chicken, to pork, to beef...so it's likely you can please everyone. It's not terribly expensive...and is worth the drive downtown.

While the size of the building may seem impressive for the Ann Arbor area....more than 20 stories of apartments...University Towers is anything but grand. Though the location is great (right on the corner of South U and Forest), the apartments tend to be small and over priced. If you want nicer furniture you have to pay an extra $50/month to live on one of the highest floors...otherwise you're stuck with living room furniture that looks like it's from a dentist's office. The work out area is full of antiquated equipment...and the pool is ever usable...so just be warned that the list of amenities used to sell the place aren't all they're cracked up to be. The one nice thing about U Towers is that there is a front desk where packages are held and rent can be paid...so that is convenient. It is also comforting that there is a buzzer intercom system and a doorman during the after hours when the front desk is closed. There are also a few study rooms off of the lobby as well as a large screen television.

The smell of the chocolate and waffle cones draws you in from the street and into Kilwin's. Kilwin's is a cute ice cream parlor type shop located on Liberty near Main Street. It's a popular place with great ice cream. The waffle cones are made fresh...and you can see the staff hard at work creating their delicacies as some of the machines can be seen through the large front windows. The ice cream is quality...and it tastes great. The smell alone of all the fresh goods will you draw you in and you won't want to leave.

Bubba's is a local restaurant that is also a bar at night. The few times that I've been there it has been rather empty, and the music was overly loud and random hip hop music. If you decide to munch on some food while you're drinking...be ware as the food quality seems to decrease significantly when it turns into a bar. When we purchased food late in the evening, it was pretty well burned and not very tasty. Some of the drinks come in large glasses...so the price isn't too bad...but it's definitely not a bumping club or bar, from what I've seen.

You'll see the most experienced and world renowned marathon runners to first time run/walkers doing shorter versions of the race. It's fun for everyone in the family, and even fun to watch from the comfort of your own home as it is televised on the public television stations.

The Ann Arbor Art Fair is a yearly tradition that draws in people from all over. With artists traveling from across the country to attend one of the largest and most prestigious art fairs in the nation, the art fair brings out the best and most talented artists. The art fair takes up many of the streets located on and near campus including State St., South University, Church, East University, Liberty, and Main Street. With many food vendors, sidewalk sales, and music and performing artists, there's something for everyone at the art fair. It's fun to just walk around, or bring some money to make some major purchases. Just be prepared for the heat...as the art fair takes place towards the end of the summer. So bring a bottle of water, some sun glasses, sunscreen, and your checkbook and you're all set for the art fair.

Fleetwood Diner is quite charming as it is a diner in a trailer. There are many tables to sit at and a counter as well. And while there are quite a few tables fit into this trailer it tends to be a quite busy and popular place, especially after the bars close. The food is just fun, great, and greasy diner food...so don't go to Fleetwood if you're on a health kick.

While one of my friends thinks Bell's is the best pizza ever and a great deal...personally I think you can do better...both in quality and in price. I have found Bell's to be overpriced greasy cardboard...that often times is burned as well. And with all these problems...it's still kind of expensive for even a small pizza. You're better off waiting for a late night special from somewhere else...to save some money and get some quality pizza. Though really it is to each his/her own...since some people love Bell's and some people hate it.

The Flint Public Library is a large library with selections for everyone. The main branch is located downtown near the cultural center. What's nice is that the Flint Public Library has many computers that individuals can use. While there are many computers up for use, you have to log on using your identification number from your library card, and the time available to use the computers is limited. Once you run out of time (about an hour I believe), you are unable to log on again for 24 hours. While there are definite cons for those who need to use the computers for an extended period of time, it has its pros as well since it keeps computers available to everyone. It's a great place for kids...as there is a whole room dedicated to them with tons of books for all ages and many programs during the summer to encourage reading all year long.

The GDL on Graham Rd. is located adjacent to the senior center...and though it is a small library, it has a great selection of videos and dvds. If the movie is not in, you can place an order and you'll be notified once it is available. You can check out pretty new movies, and if you get a vhs tape you can keep it for almost a week, while dvds you can only keep for two days. It's nice to be able to see some movies and not pay an arm and a leg at the video store. While you may not always find what you want when you want it...it's great if you're flexible with your movie preferences.
