Best

The owner and staff are very friendly, and I had great service. Great selection of wine. Happy hour wine at $4 a glass. Cozy atmosphere with a variety of seating options. ...

Worst

We ordered med-rare and got over-done. Probably the worst burger experience of my life. McDonald's would have been better than the cardboard we were served. I've never had a ba...

Nice neighborhood place 3/25/2007

This place is nice and cozy with a great selection of wine and food. The couch in front of the fireplace is a great place to wait out the winter and while its never too empty its also never over crowded. more

Wonderful! 2/13/2007

We came on Valentine's day, not knowing they had a special, fixed dinner menu. We just wanted wine and a small snack. They were so wonderful to us. We had two lovely glasses of wine, some delicious bread and oil, and a chocolate truffle, even though we weren't the ""valentine's"" customers they were expecting. We sat by the fire, heard live music and were very well taken care of. It was the most wonderful beginning we could have hoped for to an absolutely fantastic Valentine's day. We will be back!!!! Pros: wonderful wine, wonderful service, live blues, and great atmosphere more

Good wine experience but the food was below average 12/4/2006

We really enjoyed the atmosphere and live guitar performance. Definitely a great romantic scene. I thought the wine list was alright...there was only one french and australian wine on the list. I'm assuming the wine list rotates and wouldn't mind coming back another time to see the changes. Our waitress was attentive and helpful however our food arrived late and the side dish of rice and roasted carrots were cold. My pork loin was overcooked and dry. For the price, I was definitely expecting the entree to be of better quality especially after the amazing pate appetizer. We might go back but with other places like NobleRot, etc, it might be a while. Pros: Great romantic atomosphere with live music Cons: Entree was overcooked. more

Great place to kick back and drink wine. 10/7/2006

Great location, great atmosphere, and of course there wine selection is fabulous. A place that is very comfortable and non pretencious. I recommend talking with owner and find out what he has to offer that's not on the wine list. The staff is great and knowlegeable about wine. Only thing I would change is a few item's on the food menu but overall a great place to ""wine down"". more

Yum, Yum, Yum! 10/1/2006

Delicious food and attentive service. Especially notable was our pork dish - succulent. The wine list is extensive and diverse. Something for everyone. Excellent selections of ports. Stuart, the owner is jovial and friendly and knows a lot about wines and expecially ports. You can tell that the staff is happy here and this is a fun place to work. Live music is a nice touch. Keep up the great work!! Pros: Food, Wine, Owner more

Great neighborhood place 5/12/2006

This is a great place that doesn't subscribe to any fads & trends, but is just a ""great place"". Good wine, good conversation (with Stuart, the owner), good food (I usually just have the nibblies, I go for the wine), and great interior, very comfy. If you need to be ""seen"" & pretend to be somebody special, don't go here. If you want to chat with your friends over a glass of wine - then this is your place. You can always stroll in & get a good spot. Live music, but at a volume that allows conversation (but sometimes the music is so good, you'll want to listen). more

Best date spot! 2/23/2006

This is such a great place for a date! Good food & wine, and excellent, personable service. Stuart, the owner, is just a sweetie! Live music a big plus. The romantic, yet quaint atmosphere is the best. I can't say enough! Pros: atmosphere, wine choice, location more

Great Valentines Spot 2/15/2006

I went to Wine Down on 28th on Valentines and my valentine loved it. I have been there a couple of times and the service is great. The atmosphere is small and cozy. I really love the live guitar and vocals. Makes the atmosphere all the more romantic. The lighting is great as well, mostly candle lit with a few small light an of course the fire place. I really recomend this place for anyone who love fine wine and great food, but this place is really made for couples so bring a date. Pros: Great Atmosphere, Wonderful Service, Excellent wine/food Cons: Somewhat Pricy, Scarce Parking more

A place to see for yourself 2/14/2006

Great place to relax and enjoy a great glass of wine. Either sit by the fireplace or be seated at a table. I called to make reservations, but the answering machine told me that they only accept reservations for parties of six or more. When we got there, the super nice owner asked me if we had a reservation for 2. So they DO take reservations, call ahead it get busy. The food was fantastic and the wine selection is great as well. The only complaints we had were the wine pours are a little short for the $ and the service is a little slow. (But we havent found a terrific service in PDX yet, and we eat out 3 times a week.) Over all check it out!! Pros: Ambiance, Wine Selestion, Tasty Food Cons: Wine Pours more

liquid goodness 1/31/2006

Decour is cozy. Dim, calm, kind atmosphere. They know wine, and my favorite, ports. Have had three of their deserts, all top shelf, though they keep them down low for you to drool over. A very friendly, un pretensious place. Had a number of their apetizers and dinners also, never walked away with any regrets. The diablo is especially homey and hardy, yum. more

Nice Evening 1/17/2006

I enjoyed a couple of nice glasses of wine and conversation with the wine steward. I also enjoyed a unique scallop appetizer that was incredible. There's a nice fireplace to cozy up to and the live music was nice in the background - not overwhelming. Great date place! Pros: atmosphere, inexpensive, good service more

Relax and enjoy 1/15/2006

Great spot for excellent food, and good atmosphere! Get a seat by the fireplace, and enjoy some nice wine. You can't beat the price either!! Pros: atmosphere Cons: menu specials more

Terrible Service 12/28/2005

We were served a bottle of wine and a bowl of olives and were looking forward to a leisurely, mid-week dinner. We questioned the server about the special and soup and that was as close as we got to any real food! We sat for an hour with menus without anyone approaching our table to check on us to see if we were ready to order or to pour more wine. We repeatedly tried catching our server's eye, which should not be a problem in such a small dining room, but he somehow never managed to see us! After an hour and fifteen minutes in the restaurant, we were hungry and upset. To top it all off...no one apologized! Cons: Service, Service, Service more

The Best Kept Secret in Portland 9/1/2005

The Wine Down is the most romantic place to have a good meal. The ambiance of the restaurant could not be matched, with the exception of a Tuscan villa at sunset by the sea. The menu is a complex infusion of the Pacific Northwest's trademark ingredients. Live jazz guitar, candlelight and a quality bottle of wine at a reasonable price. The staff is delightful and personable. It truly is a unique experience that could only be found in Portland. I would recommend the Wine Down to anyone who wants to have a wonderfully romantic experience at a reasonable price. Pros: Romantic, Inexpensive, Great Food more

Excellent! 5/3/2005

The service, music, and food were great! The manager introduced himself and made sure we were enjoying our time. The ambiance was fantastic...highly recommended. Pros: food, service, music more

What a Great Find!!! 4/9/2005

I absolutely love Wine Down! It's cozy and romantic. The wine and food was wonderful and the pairing suggestions by our server were right on. The kitchen and front staff were very friendly and attentive without being overbearing. I've noticed some incorrect reviews about this place and was glad we didn't heed them. Italian the menu is not. We were impressed by a varied Mediterranean, Northwest, and French influenced cuisine with a little Asian(very well) put in. Most of the desserts are made there and the ones we tried were excellent. Blueberry Port Sorbet, and Rustic Apple Tart Tatin went wonderfully with 20 year-old Port and cappuccino! Thank you, again! We'll try the Creme Brulee next time! Pros: Great Wine/Food, Great Value, Great Service Cons: Park early!, Smoking outside more

Overall 12/8/2004

This is my favorite place to take a night to reconnect with the better things in life. Wine Down glows with its calm and warmth. The live entertainment is always pleasant and never overwhelming. The service has always been knowledgeable. The food is delicious, but have only nibbled on the appetizers. Pros: Fire is beaufiful, live entertainment, appetizers Cons: , more comfy chairs! more

Love it! 10/18/2004

I completely disagree with citysearch's review. This place is a neighborhood favorite! Aaron, the wine steward, is both enthusiastic and knowledgable and the food we had was great! But what I love most is the ambience and music on the weekends. The menu is not set up to be an Italian restaurant - it is eclectic and quite good. And I'm not sure what they mean by a disfunctional fireplace - it was working when I have been there! Pros: Music, Enthusiasm, Ambience Cons: , Parking more

Highly Recommended 6/5/2004

Ok, the quality of food is certainly what matters most. The Wine Down was very good indeed my wife and I had the Hazelnut Salmom. It is was well prepared and and came with nice potatoes and green beans. Maybe not a full ten course French endeavor like Genoa's but definitely tasty and very well prepared. The really great attributes about Wine Down is the great friendly ambiance and also on Saturday David is really great at performing. It gave the whole dinner and really warm and cozy feeling. We got a chance to meet Stuart the owner and he really is trying so hard to make this a really friendly, warm, good food, special quality restuarant. He has faced some hurdles getting there, but we really appreciate his efforts. The Goldman's and Logan's of Lake Oswego. Pros: Food, Service, Great atmosphere more

Good for a romantic date 12/26/2003

The music is worse than Sade, but the food is good most of the time and the flickering candle/firelight is good for eye-gazing, while the accessibly tasty wines are good for conversation and the walk home. more
