nice hotel 7/14/2005

We found the Heathman Hotel to be very satisfing. The rooms were spacious and cozy. The lobby nicely decorated and the staff so kind and helpful. Affordable rates. more

Neat historic Portland hotel 7/11/2005

The Heathman is quite a nice place to stay--I found the staff to be very friendly and welcoming, and the rooms were comfortable, clean, and classy without overcompensating. Nice atmosphere and architecture. more

Not worth the prices 6/13/2005

I was there as a guest, so I didn't send back my entree -- it had about 5 mussels on it, and none of them had opened. That means they're _bad_, and it's shocking that a plate was delivered to the table that way. The ambience is lovely, and aside from serving unsafe shellfish, the service excellent. The food was fairly good, but not up the standard that I'd expect at those prices. I think they subscribe to the ""1 stick of butter per serving"" rule of thumb, because everything was too rich. The crab cakes were swimming in a rich cream sauce, and a crab cake shouldn't need that. more

User review by bouffe 4/27/2005

We went for dinner at the heathman 3 days ago, and i am still upset about the average dinner that we were served. From the halibut to the overpriced new york steak ($50 for about 10 ounces) everything was dry or overcooked. The menu (20 plus entrees) might be to big for the kitchen to handle. With so many great restaurant in portland, the chef might want to pay attention Pros: service Cons: food, value, ambiance more

Great Service 9/4/2004

The Heathman Hotel is one of the best hotels simply for their service. With a great restaurant, jazz in the tea court, and personal concierges - I couldnt ask for anything more. Pros: SERVICE, SERVICE, SERVICE more

best dessert in town 7/17/2004

I used to live in portland and found the desserts at the heathman to be lacking. Coming back to visit, we stayed at the hotel and dined in the restaurant. I can say that the cherry pie is some of the best I have ever had. My husband had the baked meringue and it was truly a special treat with so many plump berries and delicious cream. Nice usage of fresh fruits of the season! Kudos to the chef for really working on a seasonal menu! Pros: excellent dessert men, delightful service, wonderful ingredients Cons: , loud more

Best wine service in town. 7/13/2004

I don't have the budget to eat here often but when I can I am reminded of how sorely lacking this town is as far as wine service goes. The Heathman's list is one of the most intelligent in town, and the staff is on top of pretty much every bottle. They do a half-price night on all their wines up to a certain price, and I only wish I could afford a full meal to go with my selection. Pros: Deep cellar, Immaculate service, Pleasant bar more

the way it's done 4/4/2004

I've been to the Heathman restaurant on average twice a year over 10 years and have never been anything less than completely happy. Food is truly wonderful and reasonably priced for how good it is. When you walk in it can sometimes seem crowded and loud, but settle in and let the waitstaff amaze you. I've dined there with all sorts of people and the waitstaff is always so flexible and gracious. Nearly all negative reviews you read are based on breakfast, which is I believe where new employees are trained, so keep that in mind. Definitely recommended for dinner, although Symphony nights can get kind of zoo-y. Pros: elegant service, no-miss food more

We will be back! 10/8/2003

To our surprise, my boyfriend and I had a spectacular lunch today at the Heathman! Having gone to many of the top restaurants in Portland, the Heathman offers a great lunch menu selection. We had the bacon crusted salmon and the halibut cheeks for lunch. Then followed with a lovely tiramisu and a decadent chocolate dessert. I highly recommend this as an option for the downtown business lunch goers. If you are looking for a great menu selection and service you can tell your mom about, please try it! My compliments to Michael the GM!!! Pros: Menu Selection, Excellent Service more

Good for Breakfast 6/23/2003

I've only eaten at the Heathman Restaurant at breakfast, but have been several times. I have mixed feelings. The service has always been good, and I've never experienced any problems with noise before, unlike some other reviewers. I loved the dungeness crab omelettes and smoothies, but one time I strayed from my usual order in favor of the salmon hash, which was, unfortunately, dry and virtually tasteless. So, I'd give 4 of my visits an (8) and 1 of my visits a (3). The food is very good, although not incredibly so, and comes in large, reasonably priced portions. Pros: service, ambience Cons: hit-or-miss quality more

A high priced cafeteria. 1/21/2003

A real disapointment. On the outside it seems so regal and elegant. I wanted to take my speacial woman someplace romantic a few nights ago and I norrowed it down to the heathman. The noise was almost to much to bear. It was very crowded. The service, slow, and not at all romantic. The food?Just okay. This place seemes to be a high priced cafeteria where portland elites dine after a concert or show. I was tempted to leave throughout dinner. I wished I would have chosen another place. Pros: good location Cons: crowded, expensive, loud more

why heathman? 1/19/2003

The experience that I had with the Heathman Restaurant was nothing like I imagined. From the outside looking in, the restaurant's atmosphere and the reputation of the hotel, did not reflect my experience. I indeed thought that the service was rather slow, getting our food took some time, the place was noisy and the overall feel was dreadful. The only thing that was great was the food-Excelent culinary creativity. more

Martinis to die for 12/27/2002

It is a nice change of pace to find an establishment that truly knows how to make a proper martini. Dry means swirl around the vodka in the glass and toss it out. Doesn't seem that confusing! The Heathman makes the perfect vodka martini, and their cosmopolitans are top notch as well. Also if your looking for a place that serves an extraordinary brunch the Heathman is also your place to go. Thumbs up on the Eggs Benedict! Pros: Ambience, Martinis (Gray Goose), Brunch Cons: Slightly pricey, But Oh well more

Fallen from grace 12/23/2002

We ate the Heathman for our anniversary in December of 2001. The food was wonderful, and the service was excellent. However, this December (2002) was a completely different experience. Our french toast was just this side of burnt, as were our potatoes. The ribeye steak was so fatty and underdone that neither of us could eat much of it. And once the water, juice, and coffee were delivered to our table, not a single refill was ever offered. Never again. more

yeah, Heathman!! 10/18/2002

I would like to say first that the Heathman is a great spot for a casual bite (prawn salad at the bar), and it offers the best service in town. All of the servers go out of their way to make you feel pampered. Dishes like the Octopus salad, and the Sturgeon are some of the best I have ever had. more

Live Like Royalty At The Heathman! 8/15/2002

A luxurious way to spend a night on the town in Portland, the Heathman Hotel ranks number one with me. The room was simply wonderful from the quaint bedding to the spoiling soft bathrobes, upon investigating further, to my delight there was a full mini-bar in the refrigerator, and even a disposable camera tucked away in the edible goodies. The entire experience made me feel like royalty and I found it hard to leave. A+ on the wonderful food and hard working staff that pull this entire piece together delivering more than the average consumer expects. Pros: clean and comfortable, In room treats more

place for love (oh food's good too) 8/2/2002

This place has the BEST sturgon I have ever had! The atmosphere was wonderful. The service was great, the food supurb, and the whole experience was what made me fall in love with this place! I will never forget my dinner here. more

Everything in the Heart of the City 7/23/2002

Fabulous dining! Wonderful jazz after the theatre! The staff is world class and to be greeted by the Beefeater upon check in a delight. It is the atmosphere created from the monent of arrival that lets the guest know the evening will be very special. The mini-suite we had was not disappointing in any way. Altogether a memorable experience. Pros: Exquisite Cuisine, Atmosphere, Beefeater! Cons: Exterior noise more

Best Steak Ever 6/16/2002

Visited The Heathman a few weeks back. Easily the best steak I have ever had. Pros: Great food, Great wait staff Cons: Pricey, Parking more

Great brunch 5/21/2002

I haven't had dinner here in awhile, but the brunches I can attest for. Crabcakes are the best I've had in Portland, and the eggs Benedict and salmon hash are excellent. It's a bit more expensive as far as bruch goes, but the quality is there. more
