Great service, sub par fare. 10/25/2008

We were all set for the crab bisque but were told it ""wasn't up to the chef's expectations"". It must have been bad, because our meals were far below our expectations. My duck a l'orange was the worst, the breast so tough I couldn't finish it. My wife enjoyed the halibut, but it was nothing unique. Our desserts was uninspired. I chose a familiar wine and even that was weak. \r \r No we will not be back. I resolve never again to pay for over-priced, overblown ""fine"" dining. Pros: service Cons: food, price, parking more

Heathman Restaurant 10/15/2008

One of the top restaurants in Portland. They have a great cozy little bar right next to the restaurant. Their food is always very good. The portions are modest, but the preparation that goes into every meal is unbeatable. One of the better restaurant and hotel combinations around. more

Great hotel 9/22/2008

The staff is friendly. We stayed in the Andy Warhol suite which was quite the experience. The bar is very nice and relaxing. The staff is also very helpful and polite. It is a great stay for the weekend Portland more

Excellent 9/15/2008

I've dined at the Heathman for a few years now. The food is always excellent. Seating is always prompt (with reservation of course). Service always attentive. \r \r A restaurant won't get my business for years unless they:\r 1. Have great service\r 2. Prepare food as well or better than I do at home\r 3. Have pricing which adequately reflects what they're serving\r \r Pros: fantastic food, drinks and service Cons: pricy depending on how much you drink! more

Lunch 8/11/2008

great brunch 6/5/2008

I have visited this restaurant several times. The food is always good. service is sometimes too busy and get things mixed up but I would return just for the menu choice and quality of food. Pros: great food, valet parking more

Heathman Hotel Restaurant 5/17/2008

Even if you're not staying at the hotel, the restaurant is a must when in Portland. We were at the Marriot, and it was an easy walk. The food was exquisite and the service perfect. We had a delicous dinner and the dessert of fresh berries, some we'd never heard of, fantastic. Portland is a great city with wonderful restaurants and this is definitely one of them. more

Heathman Hotel Resturant 4/6/2008

The staff is very pleasant. I have always had prompt lunch service, making the Heathman a good option for a business lunch. The menu is full of pacific-northwest-type fare (fresh and interesting salads, soups, seafood, etc.). The menu is perhaps a cross between what you find at Higgins and Jake's. The atmosphere has an old-Portland feel (hard woods, marble, etc.). If you are staying over, or looking for a good downtown breakfast place it is worth trying their eggs benedict (very good). However, you can easily find a less expensive, and more impressive breakfast place in Portland. more

great bouillabaisse matched by great service 1/2/2008

I travel to Portland occassionally for business and usually eat at Higgins. They were closed (New Year's Day) so I tried Heathmans - walking by it looked good. I only had an entree and coffee. The bouillabaisse was excellent - plenty of fish (good variety) and the broth was very good. Service was excellent - replenished bread plate without asking many times and the water glass was never below half full. Friendly yet professional waiter. I'd go back for sure. I'm from LA and usually pay a lot more for this quality so I thought it was a very good value - excellent food at a relatively low price. Always great being able to provide a 5 star rating. Pros: Bouillabaisse more

Worst Christmas Dinner Ever 12/21/2007

My husband and I made a reservation for Christmas Eve last year and were incredibly disappointed with the entire experience. Our table wasn't ready when we arrived, so we waited in the bar for about 20 minutes, understanding of course that Christmas Eve is a busy night. When we were finally shown to our table, I had to practically beg the hostess to take my coat, which she did reluctantly, with a disgusted look on her face. Our waiter was cordial enough but hardly attentive, and he told us to ""simply ignore"" the fire alarm that kept going off every 5 minutes. They finally evacuated the building, and we were forced to stand in the freezing rain without coats for nearly half an hour. Upon returning to our table, my meal was served immediately - burnt to a crisp. It had been sitting in the broiler the entire time, yet they still had the nerve to serve it! They replaced it with a less crisp, but hastily cooked replacement, then assured us to eat up because they'd take care of us. Dessert was on them, but there was no other credit on the bill for the horrendous experience. (That $6 creme brulee didn't really make us feel any better.) I even wrote a letter to the management, but received no response whatsoever. Save your money and go to any of the amazing little gems Portland has to offer - Le Pigeon, Clarklewis, Wildwood, etc. This place is a joke. Pros: Menu appeared to be excellent... Cons: Food wasn't. more

Very disappointed 11/26/2007

I have no idea what people see in this restaurant. We made reservations for Thanksgiving dinner and were asked to confirm twice. We were told we got one of the last reservations. What a joke. There were tables everywhere, people walking in off the street. Very loud, very expensive, poor food. \r We dine out four or five nights a week. I would never go back to the Heathman and would never recommend to anyone.\r Following our dinner, I called and asked to speak to the restaurant manager. I left a voice mail where I was assured I would be contacted as soon as possible. Still waiting.\r Really makes you wonder if the reviews for this restaurant are from actual customers or conjured up by the restaurant staff. By the way, this is a McCormick and Schmick. Pros: Can not find one Cons: Too many to list more

Best Service in Portland 10/16/2007

The Heathman has the best breakfast and service in Portland. The staff is amazingly attentive, always keeps your coffee full (and it's fantastic coffee), and is willing to accommodate all requests. This is one of the few restaurants that will let me order 1/2 an order of a menu item since I can never finish an entire one by myself. If you want to sit back, relax, and be pampered, this is the place to eat. Pros: Excellent Service, Delicious Food more

Okay, but there are MANY other places I'd rather go 10/15/2007

Going into the Heathman I had heard zero reviews from friends or acquaintances, though I'd heard about their well-above-average reputation here and there over the years. Upon being seated, we oohed and aaahed over the menu. EVERYTHING sounded amazing. Round One: the beet salad with green beans and blue cheese was the best of our first courses - I will mimic this one at home. My seafood chowder was heavy on the salt and cream, light on the seafood. My boyfriend's fig, cheese, and proscuitto appetizer, while sounding simple and spectacular, was so dull... and very light on the cheese (teeny tiny shreds). Round Two: My sturgeon (recommended by our server) was great, though somewhat overly fishy tasting. Our guest's spinish and chanterelle pasta was fantastic. The boyfriend's elk steak, requested medium to medium rare, was practically still alive when it was served. We would have let our server know had she checked on us... but she didn't.... after 10 minutes, we flagged down a busser to come to our rescue. Round Three: the flourless chocolate cake was typical, the caramel bread pudding was basically an ordinary flan. In summary - everything was okay...... but collectively, I wouldn't call it a memorable evening, aside from my company, of course. I won't be suggesting a follow-up visit anytime soon. Pros: Prompt seating, delicious beet salad Cons: The experience as a whole as incredibly average more

Paid for business lunch 10/4/2007

The Heathman is a little above my palate and pocketbook Take that into consideration with my comments. \r \r I had the entree crab cakes. One of the better crab cakes I've had. $14 for two. I was expecting at least 3, but I found myself more than satisfied. I guess I'm too accustomed to traditional American portions. Sauce was tangy and flavorful. \r \r My wife had the clam chowder, which she said was one of the worst she's ever had. She places more emphasis on the tenderness and multitude of the clams, rather than the actual soup portion. She said there were no clams. This is in comparison to some clam chowder she had at Pike Place Chowder, which she raves about. She also had a salmon entree, which she enjoyed thoroughly.\r \r Others at the table had the ceviche. There was one comment about it being smothered in mayo, but I heard nothing more derogatory. They ate the whole portion, so it must have been pretty decent.\r \r The service was attentive, but unobtrusive. Very elegant, professional decor, but the white paper on the tables seemed a bit low rent for this establishment. I think just the white table cloths would have sufficed. And as with most any popular restaurant, it was quite loud. \r \r I would go again to try some other menu items. Pros: Decor, service Cons: Minor items that didn't infringe upon the meal or the occasion more

THE LEFT HAND DOESN'T KNOW WHAT THE RIGHT IS DOING! 6/11/2007

The Heathman! One of Portland's most upscale hotels! But some of the worst communication amongst staff I have ever seen. First they gave away our specifcally-reserved room minutes before we arrived! Even after checking in person twice that I was to get a room overlooking the Grand Floral Parade route. Being told that my reservation was mark so as to not have the room moved. We were upgraded to another room but our plans to watch the parade from the comfort and dryness of the hotel were ruined. In the evening when my partner fell in the hall and I called room service to bring some bandages for his arm, no one ever arrived. I had to call 3 times before someone brought something the next day. In the middle of our 2-night stay a guest services person walked into our room and told us it was marked to be vacated. At the end of our stay as we tried to check out I was charged for mini bar items we didn't use and then charged $600 for the room when we had a prepaid coupon we had purchased at a silent auction months before. Needless to say that they zeroed out all of our charges when I explained to them the horrific and continual issues we had at during our visit. Not to mention the $6.25 for a drink in the bar where the booze was non-existent. The Heathman was always very apologetic every time something was amiss. I just have never seen so many things go wrong and the no employee knew anything we had mentioned to several others before. Dustin should be fired, Amy commended for trying to correct his errors. They all should learn to discuss patrons desire and needs before leaving for the day. I will never stay at the Heathman again and will make sure my friends are aware of the extremely bad treatment we received! Pros: funny outfit the foor guy wears Cons: too many to list more

The best Hotel in Portland 3/21/2007

My family and me arived in Portland for the first time. Our stay at the Heathman Hotel was the finest experience we ever had. The staff was extremely helpful on anything we asked. The restaurant was fantastic. ( The bartender was very helpful ) We can't wait to visit again. Thank you for everything. The Valdez Family.. Pros: Service more

Overpriced, not veggie-friendly, good desserts 3/14/2007

I'd really been looking forward to eating at the Heathman, but was a little let down. There were basically no vegetarian options and not even that many fish options. Not impressed with the salad I got - the blue cheese was salty (probably Stilton) and just ok. I've had far better for half the price. The fish I got was very salty and the veggies were not identifiable and too buttery. However, their desserts were good (our table ordered a few and shared). I'd go back for maybe a glass of wine and dessert if we could find room in the back with the fireplace, but would probably not return for dinner. Overall not worth the money. Pros: Good desserts Cons: Not vegetarian friendly more

Remember: They aren't fast food, you know? 3/4/2007

People want to complain that they don't get their food promptly, that is because The Heathman is one of the last restaurants standing that actually takes their time to cook for you. The Heathman is also is focusing on giving the best service that you can have. Notice that everytime they clear your appetizer plates they clear your silverware as well. Notice that they wait to bus the whole table at once so that no one is eating alone. I get sick of all of these old folks who are used to eating in the 50's when service was different. Granted, the prices are somewhat high, but they buy the most expensive ingredients that they can find. Maybe there are certain nights that a certain cook or server are not at their best, and it is a shame that can ruin an overall perspective. The Heathman is different than any other restaurant in Portland, and is worth a try, and perhaps a second chance. Pros: New Generation of Great service Cons: not a ""turn and burn"" restaurant more

THE place to take that new lover the morning after ... 2/22/2007

Portland's best (and *exy and almost formal) breakfast. Try the eggs benedict with salmon or the hangtown fry. And don't forget the fresh orange juice. Super service and romantic atmosphere. Your new lover will want to check in ... more

Great Weekend at the Heathman. 1/1/2007

We are from Seattle and came down during the big storm of '06 when all of the Eastside of Seattle had no power. We decided to avoid downtown Seattle and make a vacation out of it and goto Portland. We had an American Express Concierge recommend a hotel in the four star range. The Heathman was a great choice, right in the middle of everything. We got a double bed room and it was nice and roomy, since we could not get a room with a single king bed. We were not picky since we were already driving to Portland when we booked the stay. They invited our 40 -lb dog with no problem and everyone was friendly. There was a park behind the hotel that connected to the campus of Portland State, and we were three box from Saks and Nordy's. We stayed for 2 nights. We only ordered midnight snacks and breakfast for room service and it was decent. I usually have some problem sleeping on hotel beds, even nice hotels, but this one proved no problem. I think we had some kind of pillow top bed. They offered temperpedic beds also (we have one at home, and I would have preferred if I knew) The lobby looked very nice, but we could not enjoy it with the doggy. The Hilton was across the street, it looked nice but not as cozy... Pros: great location more
