I have eaten at the Nighthawk restaurants since 1965. Last Saturday I went to the Frisco Shop for lunch and ordered the 12 oz. sirloin strip which I have eaten for many years. I found that things have changed since the last time I ate there. The condiments for the baked potato used to be served by the waitress from metal containers. They are now packaged and brought on a small plate. The steak arrived and was a disappointment. It used to be a thick, juicy cut of meat. It is now a very thinly cut piece of inferior beef. I ordered banana cream pie which contained filling with no bananas. ""There is nothing accidental about quality"" is what Harry Aiken used to say, and he is probably spinning in his grave. Just like the revived Hill's Restaurant, Bob Cole has now given the Frisco Shop his stamp of mediocrity. Tradition is what these restaurants are based on. Without the quality they are just a name. Let's hope he doesn't get his hands on Dirty's. more

My family and I have been eating at The Frisco Shop for years! This is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin. The Frisco Shop serves up the best, juciest burgers in Austin, which you can't get anywhere else. Also, I just recently went in and tried their new Steak Salad which was excellent. I love how they are introducing new, healthier options to the menu, but still holding on to their old classics. Definately check this place out if you haven't already! I promise, it will quickly become one of you favorites! more

What a great place to kick back and enjoy Austin old school. Chicken fried Ribeye was cooked to perfection. Grilled Cheese like mom used to make. Chop Steak with Frisco seasoned butter reminds you of when you were a kid. Best fruit pie in town. Friendly staff. This place rocks! Pros: great pie more

Ya might like it if you've live in Austin all your life and ate there as a kid, but the new Frisco location does nothing for this place. A ""seat yourself policy"" leaving our large party wandering the restaurant looking for a big enough table was my 1st turn-off. After that it was just downhill till we finally got to leave. Honoring their longtime patrons, I found myself looking at more family photos on the menu than actual menu items. As the staff cleans & re-sets the tables, they pre-place the silverware, unwrapped, on each table waiting for new customers. That left me wondering who had handled or sneezed on my silverware before I got there. Again I was shocked by the menu because of prices. If you've ever had a frozen Night Hawk dinner, that's about what you get for 11 bucks, and it tastes the same. Our orders were placed just before 6pm (we had a 5 person party), food was brought to our table around 6:35-6:40- so not quite an hour, and the restaurant was only about half full so I don't think kitchen back-up was an isse... And as we left the other customers definitley let us know we weren't regulars by looking in our direction our entire walk from the table to the door. Will give 1 star for the politeness of our waitress. A place I will never return to. more

While I realize this place is an Austin favorite, I was not impressed at all. One of my friends had heard it received good reviews, so I thought, let's give it a try. We arrived around 12:15 on a Friday, so it was busy but we were seated within 10 minutes, that was the only positive thing about our visit. I ordered a cheeseburger, pretty basic nothing special and it bragged about a toasted bun on the menu, oh did I mention the burger is 5.25 a la carte, so I'm thinking a $5 burger, this must be good! I'm giddy with anticipation, then the food arrives. Talk about a dissapointment, the bun was cold, and the cheese was no where near being melted, it was as if they had just slapped it on the patty. The friend ordered fries, they were warm at best. Bottom line, I won't be going back to The Frisco. more

The coffee was good and the waitress was very nice. However, the service was not what I expected since I had heard so many good things about the Frisco. The food was not hot because they do not have heat lamps to keep the food hot. Heat lamps are essential for all restaurants, they need more help because by the time our food came, it was not hot. I ordered sourdough toast and I got Texas toast, I reminded the waitress that I had ordered sourdough and she said that Texas toast is sourdough at this resaturant ( Night Hawk), I told her that the cook needed to be educated about the differance between Texas toast and sourdough bread. \r My chicken fried was the size of a three ounce hamburger patty. If you want a good breakfast don't go here. For twenty-five dollars I expect a great breakfast. more

After reading the review on Austin360 and some of the comments like.. ""the onion rings were a life changing expierience"".. I felt I could not pass it up. The line was huge when we arrived but the hostest was very orginized and had us seated in no time (20 min) and that is with us changing tables due to the ice box like front section facing the street. I had the ""frisco "" burger ..or like I descrided it to my wife a hommeade big mac minus one bun and one patty..the bun was cold ..I swear it was ""special sacuce"" and the cheese was not the least bit melted.. The onion rings were below avg. at best.. you can find better at any bowling alley in town.. the one highlight was the hamburger steak.. It was outstanding but bloody as heck. my wife refused to eat it and when she brought it to the waitress' attention she said ""hum the little plastic thingy says well done""..I could not talk my wife into hanging around for dessert the bloody steak was all she could take .. So I got to eat the kids hamburger steaks and my wifes and I gave the rest of the big mac.. I mean Frisco burger to the homeless guy playing guitar outside.. \r You would be better off skipping The Frisco and pick up a Night Hawk dinner at the store, Pros: Great steak if you like it very rare/bloody Cons: Huge Line possible Vampires. more

The Frisco was our favorite breakfast place for years. This was our first visit since the reopening and we were very dissappointed. Extremely slow service (took 10 full minutes to even get coffee and water and then we had to ask the hostess), they ran out of hashbrowns with a full hour of breakfast time left and the bisquits and pankakes were very overdone. The waitresses now have to take your payment which really slows things up as well. The waitress culdn't find the manager to make comments to so we opted for a review in lieu of face to face. We'd been there over an hour and really wanted to get out. We'll definitely wait another month before going back. Hopefully they'll have the kinks worked out by then. If this had been our first visit we wouldn't even think of coming back but it was such a great place before the move that we'll be back to try again. Pros: It used to be my absolute favorite breakfast place before they moved to the new location. Cons: They need to work out the kinks before I'd recommend it to anyone. more

Highly recommend this restuarant. The food is terrific. It is also a history legend. The Nighthawk frozen dinners at stores was from this chain of restuarants' called Nighthawk. The special was the steak you see on the shelf in the store today. Nighthawk closed and Frisco's is the last one serving that southern comfort food. Go there with a friend, your wife, and eat good while saving money. I hope it never goes away. We need real authentic diners and this is it. Have never had their breakfast before at this place....The owner of Nighthawks cooked me up some biscuits homemade and they were fabulous - He is gone now, but his recipes live on. \r \r Pros: Food is good from the 40's and 50's recipes Cons: none - more

Im not sure where to begin...I was mesmerized by the neon hawk outside. When I pulled up, the parking lot was full of Buicks, Caddies, Oldsmobile etc. When i walked in i could have been a canidate for someone 's grandchild. Nothing wrong with older people, we will all be there one day, right? This old sckool haunt is all about 1940 design and food. Ever wonder what people ate 50 years ago? Here is is. I just love that the staff .. missing teeth, wearing wigs and have gems on their nails., My favorite is the light fare chicken friend steak. If your on a budget, get some coffee and pie. Think Blue Velvet, Lost Highway and Wild at heart. more

I've been a loyal customer for over 40 years, but last night was the last straw. over 45 minutes to receive my order (and not many customers), the chopped steak was so over-cooked i couldn't eat it. all for $15.00. I heard they are not renewing the ground lease and and will be re-locating soon. Maybe thats why they are letting it go downhill. Pros: location Cons: quality of food/service/price more

Went for a friend's birthday. Tough to get seated as a big party but the staff was very friendly in seating us as two tables next to each other. Comfort food beyond compare. Had the Texan, chop't steak which was amazing, others has chicken fried chicken and steak and all were satisfied. I wish I had room for the chocolate icebox pie, next time for sure. As any Austin native will attest, this is one of the few places that has kept its flavor and attitude despite the recent influx of non-differentiated corporate mess halls. The food is traditional Texan, the waitresses (they have always been female) are kind and helpful, and the ambiance is well suitede for small groups. I recommend the Chili-Chopt and a dinner salad served with blue cheese dressing. The meal is a chopped steak covered in Night Hawk chili and grated cheese and the salad is delicious. Three really big standout qualities: 1. the service - humble, genuinely friendly, always attentive 2. you get this great nostalgic feeling, but not an overplayed nostalgic feel / kind of hard to explain - just go and experience it for yourself 3. the ice box pies are sooooo perfect - I truly wonder if Grandma could do it any better. I had the chocolate cream pie. The white fluff on top (is it meringue?) was perfect and tasted of vanilla. The choclate was rich.
