Impressive food & service 8/25/2010

If you're searching for a place that truly has that 'top chef' experience and is special enough for let's say a milestone birthday & anniversary, this is it! It is a tasting menu so each course is a few bites, but you can choose between the number of courses. We chose the max number & chef's choice, so each course was a surprise. The service was exceptional. It is the only 5 star rated restaurant and it is easy to see why. It is pricey, but worth it. more

Excellent Ambience 7/4/2008

The Grand Del Mar is in a lovely location in Carmel Valley and the Addison is a splendid restaurant. The ambience and service are excellent, but the portion size leaves a lot to be desired. I've been to some of the best restaurants in the country ( 19 (formerly Founders in Philadelphia ), Carnelian Room ( San Francisco), Four Seasons( New York), Willard ( Washington, D.C.) and The Mansion( Dallas, Texas). Never have I've been presented with such small servings. With just two spoonfuls,my soup was finished. The lamb was excellent, but having two/three pieces barely two inches long, was not enough. I am not a big eater and don't expect Claim Jumper portions, but I do think this was a bit pretentious. I also found the doubling up of servers distracting. There just might be ""too much"" attention being paid to your diners.\r I was very disappointed given all the ""hype"" about this restaurant and the fact that an out of town visitor treated me to this dinner. We expected more. more

Fabulous 6/15/2008

San Diego has waited a long time for a restaurant like this. I would ignore the few mediocre ratings posted by others. It's evident by their posts they aren't used to dining in a fine dining establishment. In some ways this restaurant is above and beyond what most individuals in San Diego are familiar with. I lived there from 1997-2004, and am very familiar with the options. This experience is very similar to dining at a restaurant in NYC, London, Vegas, or San Francisco. Fine dining is about impeccable service, quality over quantity, and expert wines. This restaurant has all of those. The food was presented beautifully and was delicious. The staff were friendly and professional. We travel to Napa every October and are very familiar with wines and were very impressed with the selection. They has several of our favorites. I'd actually say compared to the French Laundry which we ate at last year, this restaurant has better service, better quality food, and is less costly. We had the tasting menu with wine pairing which came to around $300, while our tasting menu at the French Laundry was $800! Definitely worth it if you have the income. If you are on a budget and looking for large portions, I agree, try Cheesecake factory. I would pay this price for ambiance and food any day over the mediocre restaurants in the Gaslamp. One of the best meals I have ever had! 12/4/2007

My husband I had dinner at Addison on Thanksgiving, 2007. From the moment we arrived, the customer service was impeccable. The bar tenders where outgoing and very friendly. Once we were seated, we on the chef?s five-course tasting menu with wine pairings. The portions are modest but you are enjoying five courses (plus all the bread you?d ever want)! Obviously the reviewer who noted the portion size and pricing isn?t familiar with fine dining (perhaps they should try Cheesecake Factory or Claim Jumper?). We were absolutely stuffed at the end of the five courses. Each course was delightful, and the service was impeccable. The staff was friendly and also did a great job in presentation and timing. The sommelier was very nice and it was clear he had an absolute passion for his work. The decor of the restaurant was grand and elegant. The valet had our car waiting for us when we walked out the door. I would defiantly go back to Addison on special occasions and would highly recommend it to friends and family. The meal for two, including the wine pairings and gratuity came to around $480. If you can afford this type of meal, it?s worth every penny!!! Pros: great service, unbelievable food Cons: If you are on a budget, this isn't the place for you! more

the person that made the last comments is probably over weight or or cant afford to eat at the addison ( fine dinning restaurants usually get bad comments in when cheap people get the bill)....food is not about quantity, its about quality....next time go to the olive garden or a Chinese all-you-can-eat buffet.\r \r the addison was incredible....the food, wine and serves was outstanding. specially the wine list. the sommelier has some great choices from around the world. i will definitely return\r more

My Big Fat Dining Mistake 10/30/2007

I should have read these reviews before spending over $500 (per couple) to starve at a restaurant. But it was our best friend's birthday and that's where he wanted to eat....We love each others company and excitedly anticipated a wonderful evening. Among the 8 of us...four of us knew their wines and four of us just like what we like.....Those who knew their wines were not impressed and since I do not know my wines, I won't even comment on those poured except to say that the dessert wine tasted like cheap cooking sherry to me. I will however comment on the food, or lack of it...Each time we were ""Presented"" with a new dish we looked down at it and laughed....After three teeny tiny courses, I found myself begging the waiter to please bring me another roll....which by the way was about the size of a quarter...Delicious, for sure, ..but come on !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Call me crazy, but I really don't understand the concept.....get people nice and drunk and don't give them any food.....aren't there laws about that ? more

Brillant Experience 4/20/2007

I had an excellent experience at Addison's. As you drive up the driveway you feel as if you are entering an entirely different part of San Deigo. After a couple of drinks at the stately bar with the knowledegable bartender we were graciously seated by the warm staff. Service was excellent and the food was better. The chef made many accommadtions for our party that did not go unnotticed or unappreciated. Overall it was a fantastic experience and I would reccommend the resturant to anyone who could afford it. more

overrated 2/26/2007

I dined at Addison' with much anticipation. Boy was I disappointed. There was a misplaced arrogance that permeated the staff. The food was certainly adequate,however if your claiming to be one of the ,""Best"",they fell dismally short. The dining competition in San Diego has improved dramatically over the last few years,so just claiming to a cut above will not cut it. Better recommendation, go vist Bertrans or Oceanaire, and have a much better overall experience. more

An ostentatious dining room that might impress friends from Dallas or Omaha, the room lacked intimacy. The appointments were high quality and the bar was, indeed, impressive. We had 6 starters and 5 different entrees between 6 people. The overall quality of the service was excellent, but one would expect that in a room that had only 10 other diners in it. The sommelier kept trying to impress us with the fact that he worked at the French Laundry (3 times in one meal (?)) The food quality was very good but this is not the French Laundry 'south' as I heard someone exclaim recently. The presentation was very good and the food was also very good but not what I am accustomed to at an establishment that charges, on average $75 per diner before wine. Corkage is $25 bottle. Our bill for 6 starters, 5 entrees, corkage (X3), 1 dessert and coffee all around as $640 including tip. At $105 PER PERSON (when we bring our own wine!!!) there many other choices in the San Diego area that provide a better overall dining experience. more

Great new spot 12/20/2006

The dining room is grand, and maybe even a little overdone, but the sweeping views of the golf course, amazing wine cellar, and all the great specialties like risotto and short ribs make this place one of my favorite new restaurants that has opened in a while. more
